Abstract

This study aims to explore gestural multimodality, which includes hand signals, facial expressions, and body postures, within the context of cybertext. It examines how multimodal, gestural-based communication alters meaning in social media environments. This research is qualitative in nature and utilizes a content analysis approach. The data is sourced from social media text, which is classified and analyzed contextually. The research instruments include data collection through observation and text analysis of multimodal elements. Data analysis is conducted using a multimodal pragmatics approach to evaluate the role of gestural context in online communication. The results of this study identify five roles of gestural context in cybertext: (1) the utilization of gestural context as a basis for individual meaning-making, (2) the implementation of gestural context as a foundation for collective assumptions, (3) the incorporation of gestural context to highlight significance, (4) the integration of gestural context for verification purposes, and (5) the inclusion of gestural context to serve as a means of validation in digital communication.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology has significantly influenced the field of linguistics, particularly pragmatics, by expanding its scope from traditional intra-linguistic factors to encompass extralinguistic contexts such as social, cultural, situational, and cyber dimensions. This shift has ushered in functionalistic and post-functionalistic approaches in Indonesia, broadening the field to include semantic, cultural, cognitive, and cyber pragmatics. This study investigates how visual multimodal cybertext contexts in Indonesian digital media affect the interpretation of speech intent. This research draws on five selected visual, multimodal text excerpts from social media collected through free-flowing listening and note-taking, and it employs distributional and extralinguistic analysis methods. The findings reveal three primary roles of visual elements in cybertext: (1) typographic visuals that clarify background context for intended meaning, (2) visual icons that aid in contextual explanation, and (3) illustrative visuals that enhance understanding of the communicated message. These visual components are essential in facilitating accurate interpretation and engagement with speech acts in digital spaces. Addressing the gaps in understanding these elements can enhance communication strategies in Indonesian digital media, supporting clearer interaction and comprehension in a multicultural digital environment. This research contributes to the evolving field of cyber pragmatics by demonstrating the need for effective multimodal approaches to digital communication, especially in diverse sociocultural settings.

Abstract

This research aims to elucidate the pragmatic significance of employing numerical wordplay with humorous undertones from a cyber-text semio-pragmatics perspective. Social media serves as the primary data source, with textual content featuring instances of numerical wordplay with comedic elements constituting the substantive data. Data collection involved reading and note-taking techniques, followed by identification, selection, classification, and typification to distinguish between suitable and unsuitable data for analysis. Triangulation was employed to validate the data, involving both experts in the field and relevant theoretical frameworks. Contextual analysis was utilized as the analytical method to uncover the pragmatic meanings embedded within the use of numerical wordplay. The findings reveal various pragmatic functions, including concealing speech intent, maintaining secrecy, easing speech delivery, playful engagement, manipulation of speech intent, and inviting humor with speech partners. This research contributes theoretically to the advancement of pragmatics and cyber-pragmatics as interdisciplinary fields within linguistics, particularly in the realm of digital communication. Furthermore, it offers practical implications for fostering further research in pragmatics, especially in the emerging field of cyber-pragmatics, which warrants further exploration and scholarly attention.

Abstract

While bilingualism in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often perceived as challenging due to social and communication limitations, recent studies reveal substantial benefits for cognitive and social development through bilingual learning. This article examines factors impacting bilingual language acquisition in children with ASD, including family language environment, language input quality, and communication strategies. Using a literature review methodology, this study integrates findings from recent research on autism and bilingualism, focusing on effective approaches to support dual-language learning. Results indicate that strategic bilingual education positively affects communication, enhances cognitive flexibility, and improves social skills among children with autism. Practical strategies, such as structured language exposure, consistent usage, and visual supports, are discussed to aid educators and caregivers in fostering bilingual proficiency. These insights suggest that bilingual education, when implemented with appropriate techniques, serves as a valuable tool for enriching the overall developmental trajectory of children with ASD, reinforcing the need for inclusive and adaptable language programs.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the presence of argumentative inaccuracies in the 2023–2024 Indonesian presidential and vice-presidential debates through the lens of cognitive linguistics and contextual pragmatics. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were drawn from transcripts of five debate rounds and analyzed using Toulmin's model of fallacies combined with situational context theory. The research identifies five dominant fallacies: evading the issue, argument from ignorance, appeal to authority, ad hominem attacks, and hasty generalizations. Each fallacy is interpreted within its political and situational context—revealing how historical references, ethical deflections, appeals to seniority, lack of mastery, and satire are strategically employed. The findings offer insight into how these inaccuracies diminish the integrity of public political discourse and obscure substantive discussion of policies. Furthermore, the study underscores the critical role of context in shaping the interpretation and reception of political arguments. It contributes to the growing body of work on cognitive-pragmatic approaches in political linguistics, and emphasizes the need for educational efforts to cultivate critical thinking and argumentative literacy among citizens and students alike. This research also suggests practical implications for debate organizers, moderators, and media analysts—calling for clearer standards to reduce manipulative rhetoric in public forums. Future studies are encouraged to apply computational methods to expand this work or examine comparative debate formats across cultures.

Abstract

Riau Malay is a vital part of Indonesia’s oral heritage, reflecting the socio-cultural identity of the Riau Malay community. In everyday interactions, Riau Malays frequently use allusive language as a means of politeness and as a reflection of cultural values. These linguistic expressions facilitate respectful communication and serve as a tool for character education. This study aims to redefine the role of Riau Malay figurative expressions as more than just linguistic tools, but as fundamental components of politeness and ethical communication. Additionally, it examines how these linguistic traditions can be preserved and integrated into higher education to foster character development, particularly in instilling values such as integrity, empathy, and respect among university students. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to analyze figurative expressions in Riau Malay. Data collection included documentation of traditional linguistic expressions and interviews with cultural experts and educators. The analysis focused on the role of allusions in social interactions and their contribution to shaping ethical behavior. Findings reveal that Riau Malay allusions are deeply embedded in cultural communication, serving as markers of politeness and carriers of moral and ethical values. These expressions reflect virtues such as humility, respect, and social harmony, reinforcing positive character traits among speakers. Incorporating Riau Malay figurative language into higher education has shown potential in strengthening students' cultural identity and ethical behavior. Interviews with educators revealed that students who engage with Malay linguistic traditions develop a deeper appreciation for local wisdom and improve their interpersonal communication skills. This study underscores the importance of preserving and promoting Riau Malay allusions as a means of fostering character education in higher learning institutions. By integrating these expressions into academic discourse, universities contribute to cultural heritage preservation while instilling ethical values in students. Future research should explore the long-term impact of structured linguistic programs on moral development and identify further ways to integrate traditional linguistic wisdom into modern educational frameworks.
