Abstract

Abstract

This article is an introduction to examining how communication pragmatics operates as a strategic resource for negotiating identity and amplifying minority voices within global–local landscapes. Drawing on a systematic review of ten empirical studies published in Volume 11, Number 2 (2025)—Autumn Issue, the study synthesizes how pragmatic practices shape meaning, power relations, and cultural positioning across diverse sociocultural settings. Rather than treating pragmatics solely as a linguistic mechanism, this review conceptualizes it as a form of cultural action through which marginalized communities preserve local values while engaging with global discourses. The analysis reveals that pragmatic strategies, such as indirectness, politeness, code-switching, ritualized speech, and digital semiotics, play a crucial role in sustaining minority identities amid pressures of standardization and globalization. Across the reviewed studies, local actors employ language performatively to assert belonging, resist erasure, and adapt to transnational norms. Examples range from sacred and customary communication practices in Minangkabau society to classroom interactions, digital communication, and intercultural encounters where global languages intersect with local epistemologies. Findings further indicate that pragmatic negotiation enables minority voices to remain audible without overt confrontation, allowing speakers to balance cultural loyalty with communicative accessibility. In educational, religious, and digital domains, pragmatic choices function as identity markers that mediate authority, solidarity, and resistance. This review highlights a recurring pattern: global communication does not simply overwrite local identities but instead generates hybrid pragmatic forms that reflect both adaptation and resilience. The study enhances the field of communication and pragmatics by showing how everyday communicative choices enact global–local dynamics. It contends that comprehending minority identity formation necessitates an examination of pragmatic practices as culturally ingrained, ideologically significant, and socially impactful. Ultimately, the article positions communication pragmatics as a key analytical lens for examining identity negotiation and minority agency in an increasingly interconnected world.

Abstract

This study addresses the growing disconnection between scientific health promotion and traditional cultural practices in multicultural societies. In Indonesia, particularly in West Sumatra, indigenous health knowledge rooted in Minangkabau philosophy has long emphasized balance, respect, and communal well-being. However, in the context of globalized sports nutrition and cross-cultural communication, these values are often marginalized or misinterpreted. The challenge lies in integrating ethical communication with traditional health practices, such as the consumption of stingless bee honey (Galo-galo), into modern health and sports systems without reducing them to mere commodities. The research aims to explore the intersection of cross-cultural communication ethics, multicultural values, and sports nutrition by examining the functional role of West Sumatra honey as both a nutritional and cultural medium. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes how Minangkabau health traditions can be ethically conveyed in pluralistic contexts to promote athlete performance and public well-being. Laboratory findings indicate that West Sumatra stingless bee honey exhibits superior phytochemical properties, with total phenolic content ranging from 39.98 to 81.02 mg GAE/g and α-glucosidase inhibition of 67.6%, confirming its strong antioxidant and anti-hyperglycemic potential. In applied sports contexts, supplementation with Galo-galo honey correlates with stable blood glucose levels and faster heart rate recovery (HRR) in rowing and soccer athletes. By integrating Minangkabau philosophical ethics, such as duduk samo randah and tagak samo tinggi, the study proposes a model of ethical communication grounded in empathy and cultural humility. The results underscore that fostering cross-cultural communication ethics through traditional resources not only enhances physical performance and health but also strengthens social harmony and cultural resilience in an increasingly globalized era.

Abstract

The globalization of the Indonesian language through the Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) programme has evolved from a simple linguistic exercise into a sophisticated instrument of cultural diplomacy and international education. As Indonesia's economic and cultural influence grows, more and more international students, researchers, and professionals want to learn the language. The pedagogical challenge in BIPA has transitioned from the acquisition of grammar and vocabulary to the cultivation of sociopragmatic competence. Research highlights a critical realization: the primary obstacle for international students is not necessarily cognitive or linguistic capacity but a lack of understanding regarding the cultural discourse that governs thinking and speaking within the Indonesian context. This suggests that language and culture are inextricably linked, forming a singular nexus where communication only becomes meaningful through the lens of cultural orientation

Abstract

The rapid evolution of digital communication has transformed linguistic interaction into a spatially distributed phenomenon, wherein meaning emerges through multimodal cues embedded in virtual environments. This study examines the psychological implications of spatial cybertext environments, interactive, hypertextual spaces within social media, on psycholinguistics students who navigate these platforms as both users and analysts of language. Grounded in pragmatic and psycholinguistic frameworks, this research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to explore how spatial discourse structures, multimodal symbols, and digital affordances shape users’ cognitive and emotional engagement. Data were collected from in-depth interviews, participant observations, and online discourse samples drawn from academic social media interactions. The findings indicate that students’ exposure to spatial cybertexts leads to three distinct psychological phenomena: (1) cognitive tension due to multimodal overload and fragmented attention; (2) pragmatic drift arising from context ambiguity and algorithmic mediation; and (3) metapragmatic awareness, reflecting a heightened sensitivity to language use, politeness, and identity performance in digital contexts. The study concludes that pragmatic awareness functions as both a cognitive and emotional regulator, enabling psycholinguistics students to sustain interpretive coherence amid digital overstimulation. The research offers insights into how spatial discourse in social media environments redefines the relationship between language, cognition, and affect in contemporary digital learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the forms of adherence to and violations of language politeness principles in the YouTube comment section of the video titled "Dirty Vote." Utilizing a qualitative-descriptive approach, the research aims to reveal how principles of language politeness are both observed and breached in online discourse. The data were collected from comments posted by viewers of the "Dirty Vote" video using several techniques: (1) free listening technique (SBLC) to read and identify relevant comments, (2) a recording technique where comments containing politeness principles were captured via screenshots, and (3) a note-taking technique to organize the data in an inventory table. The data analysis was conducted in three stages: data reduction through matching and distribution methods, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The study reveals that viewers' comments adhered to several politeness maxims, including the tact, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy maxims. Simultaneously, the study identifies violations of the same maxims, with the addition of the generosity maxim. Notably, adherence to the generosity maxim was not observed in any comments. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of language politeness in digital interactions, specifically within the context of public discourse on YouTube. This research underscores the dynamic nature of language use in online spaces, where politeness norms are continuously negotiated and reshaped.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to identify the types of humor employed and to examine humor discourse both textually and contextually. This research uses a qualitative approach. Data collection involved in-depth techniques, such as unobtrusive observation and note-taking. The analyzed data consists of a video episode titled  Politics Uhuy: Komeng’s Secret to Getting to Senayan,” uploaded by the Rosi Kompas TV YouTube Channel on February 22, 2024. The video, lasting 1 hour and 3 minutes, had  pproximately 3 million views. For data analysis, the study applies Astuti's framework on forms of humor discourse alongside Wijana and Rohmadi's theories on humor  ontext. The results reveal multiple forms of humor in the episode, including educational, political, household, family, ethnic, and religious humor. Notably, no sexual or  romantic humor was observed. The qualitative discourse analysis explores how humor conveys criticism, reflects social realities, and engages with the audience. Findings indicate a predominance of political humor, suggesting that humor is a critical tool for discussing political issues. Also, humor connects with the audience by referencing cultural elements and social values. Contextual analysis reveals that humor functions as entertainment and an effective medium for delivering social and political messages.

Abstract

This research delves into the linguistic intricacies of Tansi, a regional language spoken in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Sawahlunto, a city with a rich cultural tapestry and complex social dynamics, serves as a fascinating case study for examining how language evolves and diversifies within a specific geographical context. This study investigates the variations in Tansi language, focusing on usage patterns and levels of formality, as influenced by the city's diverse population. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, the research meticulously documents and analyzes conversational data from various social settings, including interactions among students, market traders, and local youth. Data collection methods involved non-participatory observation and detailed audio recordings, allowing for a nuanced understanding of linguistic practices in situ. The findings reveal significant variations in Tansi language, shaped by both the context of use and the degree of formality required in different social interactions. Geographical diversity emerges as a critical factor driving these linguistic differences, as residents from various regions bring distinct linguistic influences into the local vernacular. This study not only sheds light on the dynamic linguistic landscape of Sawahlunto but also contributes to broader discussions on language variation and social interaction within regional communities. The research underscores the importance of considering geographic and social variables in the study of language, offering new insights into the complex mechanisms of linguistic adaptation and evolution in culturally rich environments.
