Abstract

This research aimed to improve student engagement and learning outcomes in the subject of molecular concepts through the implementation of the contextual chemistry approach. The research was conducted using the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method with two cycles of action. The research subjects were students from Grade X Science 2 at SMA Negeri 6 Pontianak. Data were collected through observations of student activities and evaluation tests of learning outcomes. The results of the research showed a significant increase in student learning activities from Cycle I to Cycle II. The average increase in learning activities was 13.06%, and all aspects of activity met the criteria for active participation. Student learning outcomes also increased from Cycle I to Cycle II. The average learning outcomes increased from 69.71 to 75.14, and the percentage of mastery increased from 60% to 74.29%. The implementation of the contextual chemistry approach in teaching molecular concepts had a positive impact on student engagement and learning outcomes. Students demonstrated engagement in answering questions, presenting arguments, completing tasks, engaging in discussions, and presenting group work results. Its implementation can encourage student involvement in the learning process, improve conceptual understanding, and connect knowledge to everyday life situations

Abstract

Liver, colon, and cervical cancer are the top three types of cancer which rank in the top five worldwide in terms of incidence and mortality. Simpur air (Dillenia suffruticosa)plant has traditionally been used for the treatment of various diseases, one of which is cancer. This study aims to prove cytotoxic effect and selectivity of simpur air wood bark fractions against liver HepG2, colon WiDr, and cervical HeLa cancer cells. Simpur air wood bark is macerated using 96% methanol. The methanolic crude extract was fractionated with the liquid-liquid partition method using n-hexane and ethyl acetate. Cytotoxicity test using MTT assay method. The result showed that the methanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and methanol fraction in liver HepG2 cancer cells had IC50 values 179,32±13,55; 85,14±8,58; 140,08±22,63; >500 µg/mL and in colon WiDr cancer cells had IC50 values 133,02±27,64; 41,54±37,58; 124,76±17,22; >500 µg/mL. Meanwhile, all fractions had IC50 values >500 µg/mL in HeLa cervical cancer cells. These data indicate that the n-hexane fraction in WiDr cells is potentially cytotoxic and selective with a selectivity index value greater than 3. Thus, simpur air wood bark has the potential to be developed as an anticancer drug candidate.

Abstract

This study seeks to describe the metacognitive awareness of prospective chemistry teacher students in learning. This study aims to describe the metacognitive awareness of chemistry education students in the basic ability to teach chemistry subject. This type of research is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. This research questionnaire is a modified MAI instrument. The result of the validity test and reliability test of the instrument found that 50 of the 52 MAI instrument statements were valid (the reproducibility coefficient value was 0,90 and the scalability coefficient value was 0,79) and quite reliable (with a value of (0,458). The results of the research data analysis showed that the overall proportion of students’ metacognitive awareness was 82,825% in the good category. This indicates that students are aware of their own thinking and can distinguish the stages of elaboration input and output of their own thoughts.

Abstract

The industrial revolution 4.0 makes us develop into adaptive humans. 21st century skills, that involves thinking critically and inventiveness, abilities to communicate and teamworks, are needed to adapt to all technological changes. Among the four 21st century skills, creative thinking skills are needed to develop innovative ideas in answering problems in the learning process. The variable of this research is students’ creative thinking skills. The aspects studied consist of originality, fluency, flexibility, and elaboration. The research process was conducted with descriptive quantitative using a sample of 35 students of class XI IPA at SMA Negeri 1 Mempawah Hilir. The research instruments used were creative thinking test questions in the form of descriptions and interview guidelines. The results of data analysis stated that students’ creative thinking skills were included in the insufficient category with a percentage of 74,29% of the sample. The average value in originality is 42,68%, while the aspects of fluency, flexibility, and elaboration have the same average of 36,78%. Several factors cause the low level of students’ creative thinking skills; namely students still memorize the material in the book, lack of learning experience, students tend to give answers as they are because they think they will get a score even though they only write a few answers, and another factor is that students lack focus when working on test questions.

Abstract

This study discusses the ineffective chemistry learning process resulting in poor grades at State Senior High School (SMAN) 1 Rasau Jaya, students tend to receive information from the teacher without constructing their own knowledge, so students have difficulty in constructing the material obtained from the teacher. The purpose of this study is to describe the learning outcomes of students in 11th Grade Science Class odd semester in chemistry subjects at SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya. The form of research used in this research is descriptive research, and the type of research is a case study. Case study is one of qualitative research, in which researchers conduct in-depth exploration of programs, events, processes, activities, for one or more people. The subjects of this study were students of 11th Grade Science Class at SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya in the 2019/2020 school year who took the odd semester general test, totaling 93 students. The research process includes three stages, namely the preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the final stage. The data collection tool used is the odd semester general test score. Results and Discussion regarding Indicator 1: List the general formula of alkane, alkene and alkyne compounds, Indicator 2: Mention the law of conservation of energy, Indicator 3: Determine the number of moles from the results of the experiment, Indicator 4: Determine the value of the equilibrium constant Kc based on the reaction. The results of the general test conducted on 11th Grade students of SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya can be concluded that the learning outcomes of students in the class are not adequate.

Abstract

This study aims to produce an Environmental-Based Chemistry Practicum Assessment Instrument for Reaction Rate Material for 11th Grade of MA/ SMA. The development model used in this research is the development model according to Borg and Gall which consists of 4 stages: Potential and Problems, Gathering Information, Product Design, and Design Validation. The development in this study refers to the product produced in the form of an assessment instrument. which is measured until the validity of the expert where the validity aspects are based on the results of the experts' assessment validation questionnaire. The aspects assessed in the product of the environmental-based practicum performance instrument assessment instrument are the feasibility of instructions, content feasibility and language feasibility. The assessment instrument in this content aspect is arranged sequentially according to the practicum procedure. Based on the results of validation by validators, the linguistic aspect obtained a score with a percentage of 93%, then the linguistic aspect is divided into several assessment criteria, including the use of language in accordance with EYD, clarity of instructions and directions and the language used is straightforward and easy to understand Based on the results of validation by validators, the linguistic aspect obtained a score with a percentage of 91%. The validity level of the chemistry practicum performance assessment instrument measured practicum performance in the form of scores 1-4. Determination of the validity of the practicum performance assessment instrument is done by calculating the score given by the validator and analyzing the validator's suggestions and input on the instrument product assessment questionnaire sheet in the form of a check list. The results concluded that the student practicum performance assessment instrument was feasible to use.
