Abstract

This study was aimed to analyze the effect of multi-micronutrients (MMN) supplementation and nutrition education on nutrition knowledge, mean adequacy ratio (MAR) and iron status of young adolescent girls (YAG). The study was done in three purposively selected junior high schools (JHS) in rural Bogor by implementing a quasi experiment control trial for 112 YAG for 16 weeks: thirty five YAG in the first JHS as a MMN group (SG) were given three times of MMN tablets per week, forty two YAG in the second JHS were given MMN tablet plus nutrition education delivered by trained teacher fortnightly called SGP group and thirty five YAG in the third JHS as a control group. The result showed that the increment of nutrition knowledge score as well as MAR of SGP group were significantly higher than the other two groups. The decrement level of hemoglobin (Hb) in SG and SGP groups was significantly lower than in control group, but in the subset data of anemic group, both intervention groups had significantly increased level of Hb. This imply that nutrition education improved nutrition knowledge of YAG, but MMN tablet could not improve Hb level in general and only had effect on YAG suffering from anemia.Key words: multi-micro nutrients, nutrition education, iron status, adolescent girls

Abstract

The study aims were to (1) assess the nutritional status, adequacy level, and physical fitness of the nonpregnant reproductive female workers, and (2) analyze the effect of micronutrients supplementation on their iron status and physical fitness. This research employed experimental design of double blind, completely randomized design by involving 338 households of female workers. The experimental unit consists of 39 female workers whose hemoglobin level were 80-125 g/L. However, five of them were drop out due to pregnancy or sickness. The treatments applied in the study were three capsules containing: (1) iron and folic acid (BF), (2) multi-vitamin and mineral (MVM), which contains of 15 different vitamins and minerals, and (3) placebo (P). The body mass index of the female workers were thin 12 percent, normal 70 percent and overweight 18 percent. Most of their nutritional intake of vitamin C, calcium and iron were deficient but they had a good to superior of physical fitness. After 10 weeks of three days per week supplementation, BF significantly increased the hemoglobin (p

Abstract

ABSTRACT. The objective of  this study  was to investigate the efficacy of  iron and zinc supplementation on anemic status and zinc status of children aged 6-24 months. The study was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in which 173 children aged 6-24 months were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Fe+ 15 mg Zn daily 30 mg Fe+30 mg Zn weekly or placebo for 5 months. As expected, no significant difference in the baseline hemoglobin and serum zinc concentration and nutrient intake between the three supplementation groups. In the children aged 6-24 months, micronutrient deficiencies were prevalent. Almost 50% of the children were anemic, and 20% of them were zinc deficient. The anemic children had a 2.5-fold greater risk of  zinc deficient than did the non-anemic children. This could indicate the existence of concurrent nutritional deficiencies. At the end of the 5mo supplementation period, the daily and weekly Fe+Zn supplementation tend to increased hemoglobin concentrations, but there were no significant difference compared with the placebo. The daily and weekly Fe+Zn supplementation did not significantly affect serum zinc concentration compared with the placebo.   Keyword: suplementasi, anemia, besi dan seng.

Abstract

Indonesia is faced with two nutritional problems, namely malnutrition and over nutrition while nutritionalproblems in adolescents tend to be more dominant for being overweight, this can be seen from the prevalenceof adolescent obesity in Cianjur district is 10.6%. Therefore consumption of vegetables and fruits is highlyrecommended to reduce the prevalence of overweight especially in adolescents. The government through theIndonesian Indonesian Balanced-Nutrition Guidelines (PGS) recommends consumption of vegetables and fruitsof 400 g per person per day consisting of 250 g of vegetables and 150 g of fruit. The purpose of this study wasto identify the availability of vegetables and fruits at home, the contribution of vegetables and fruit to vitamin, mineral and fiber intake and the relationship between the nutritional practices of students and mothers as parentsrelated to Indonesian Balanced-Nutrition Guidelines with the consumption of vegetables and fruit. This study wasa cross-sectional study funded by the Neys-van Hoogstraten Foundation, the Netherlands and conducted at SMPN1 Cianjur with a total of 72 students. Data were analyzed using Mann Whitney difference test and Rank Spearmanrelationship test. This research was funded by Neys-van Hoogstraten Foundation, the Netherlands. The amountof fruit and vegetable consumption of students has not been in accordance with Indonesian Balanced-NutritionGuidelines recommendations. The average of vegetable consumption of students was 36.9 ± 34.8 grams per day, while the average of fruit consumption of student was 203.2 ± 112.9 grams per day. There was a significantrelationship (p <0.05) between maternal nutritional practices and nutritional practices of students related to PGSwith consumption of vegetables and fruit of students. This study shows that the consumption of vegetables andfruit in students has not been implemented in accordance with the recommendations of PGS therefore it’s need tomake encouragement to parents which can motivate and familiarize students to consume vegetables and fruit athome
