Abstract

This study aimed to examine the potential of white tea and kelor in improving lipid profile and histopathological features of the pancreas in streptozotocin-induced Sprague-Dawley rats. The research design was an experimental study with post-test control group design. Catechin content were analysed using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats (out of 24 rats, 12-week old, 200-300 g) were induced with intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin at a dose of 40 mg/kg BW. Four groups of rats received one of the green tea (GT), white tea (WT), kelor (K), or the mixture of white tea and kelor (WTK) with a dose of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) at 100 mg/kg BW administered orally for 21 days. Measurements of the lipid profile and preparation of histopathological features of the pancreas were performed after the intervention was completed. The results showed that white tea had the highest concentrations of catechin (39.17%), gallic acid (1.09%), EGCG (4.46%), and epicatechin (9.61%) compared to the other tea groups. The TG levels of the WTK group (95±19.35 mg/dl) were significantly different (p<0.05) from the WT and K groups but not significantly different from the normal (105.8±23.89 mg/dl), DM and GT groups. Meanwhile, the HDL levels did not show significant differences in each intervention group (p>0.05). The mean diameter of the islets of Langerhans in the DM group (9.16± 2.56 μm) was significantly different (p<0.05) from the WT (20±8.94 μm), K (17.16±5.26 μm), WTK (18.66±4.17 μm), and N (21.07±8.49 μm) groups but not significantly different from the GT group (14.33±5.24 μm). The histopathological features of the pancreas showed an increase in the diameter of the islets of Langerhans in WT, K, and WTK groups. This study revealed that the mixture of white tea and kelor had the potential to ameliorate triglyceride levels and histopathological features of the pancreas in streptozotocin-induced Sprague-Dawley rat.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the antioxidant activity, total phenols, and flavonoids of kersen leaves (Muntingia calabura L.) extract (KLE) and determine the hepatoprotective activity of KLE in soft drink induced mice. Soft drinks induction causes liver injuries which increases the serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) levels. Mice were divided into five treatment groups (n=5) and were given Tween 80 (1%) (normal control), Tween 80 (1%) and 7 ml soft drinks (negative control), KLE (1000, 1500, and 2000 mg/kg), and 7 ml soft drinks per oral once daily for 4 weeks. Antioxidant activity was measured by 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. Total phenols and flavonoids were analyzed by Folin-ciocalteu colorimetric and aluminium chloride (AlCl3) method. The blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis. The result showed that the KLE antioxidant activity were 11.11+0.50 ppm. Total phenols and flavonoids detected in the KLE samples were 2.19+0.12 mgGAE/g and 2.43+0.24 mgQE/g respectively. Mice treated with KLE had a significantly lower (p<0.05) serum SGOT and SGPT levels than negative control group. In conclusion, KLE has a potential hepatoprotective activity that works in synergy with its antioxidant activity.

Abstract

The study analysed differences in nutrition content of various bilih fish flour proportions in bilih fish bar with zinc and calcium as minerals of interest. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The proportion of bilih fish flour in the fish bars dough were of three levels, i.e. 30%, 40% and 50% of the total weight of flour. The data obtained were analyzed with one-way ANOVA, followed by Duncan's New Multiple Range test. The level of statistical significance was set at p<0.05. The best proportion based on its nutritional content was the 50% with the energy content of 327 kcal, protein content 22.75%, lipid content 11.99%, carbohydrate content 32.06%, moisture content 28.28%, ash content 4.44%, zinc content 4.58 mg, and calcium content 922.23 mg per 100 g. A serving size (±30 g) of treatment is able to suffice for 5.06-7.05% zinc and 0.87-16.77% calcium adequacy as well as the daily requirement of 2,150 kcal. Sensory evaluation showed that the treatments had no significant effects on the organoleptic attributes of the fish bars, except for taste (0.033). This bilih fish bar can be utilized as a source of zinc and calcium for high-risk groups such as children, adolescents, pregnant women, and people with diabetes.

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a growing health concern in Indonesia, particularly in rural communities with limited healthcare access. Behavioral risk factors such as smoking, coffee consumption, and poor health-seeking behavior (HSB) may increase MetS risk in vulnerable populations. This study aimed to examine the association between lifestyle behaviors—smoking, coffee consumption, and HSB—and the risk of MetS among fishermen and oil palm farmers in Aceh, Indonesia.  A case-control study was conducted among 240 adults, comprising 120 couples,  recruited from rural fishing and farming communities. Cases met the IDF 2020 MetS criteria, while controls did not. Data on sociodemographics, smoking, coffee intake, and HSB were collected via structured interviews and clinical assessments. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify independent risk factors, adjusting for age, gender, and education. Smoking among husbands (AOR = 2.89; 95% CI: 1.19–7.02; p = 0.019), coffee consumption (AOR = 2.40; 95% CI: 1.00–5.79; p = 0.049), and low HSB (AOR = 3.10; 95% CI: 1.35–7.11; p = 0.008) were significantly associated with higher odds of MetS. While age and education were not independently significant, they were retained in the model as potential confounders. This study highlights the need for tailored health promotion targeting smoking cessation, improved health service engagement, and dietary awareness in rural Indonesian populations. Interventions should consider sociocultural practices such as sweetened coffee consumption to reduce MetS risk effectively.

Abstract

KATA KUNCI: cakupan kesehatan universal; diare; kemiskinan; pernikahan dini; pneunomia; stunting  ABSTRACTBackground: Stunting is an important indicator reflecting children’s health disparities, caused by various factors such as malnutrition, infectious diseases, and a lack of social stimulation. Additionally, socioeconomic factors play a crucial role in influencing the nutritional status of children. Objectives This study aims to determine the risk factors of stunting in West Java Province in 2022.Methods: The study design was an ecological study using data from 27 districts/cities in West Java Province. The data were obtained from the 2022 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI) report and the Statistics of West Java Province. Bivariat analysis with Pearson correlation is applied for normally distributed data, while Spearman correlation is used for non-normal data. Variables are considered significantly related if the p-value is <0.05. Logistic regression analysis determines Odds Ratios (OR) to identify risk factors for stunting. Results: The results revealed that stunting prevalence in West Java reached 20.2% with 16 regions showing a high prevalence of stunting (>19.2%). Correlation analysis showed significant association between poverty and stunting prevalence (r= 0.423, p=0.028), health insurance and stunting prevalence (r = -0.570, p = 0.002), family planning and stunting prevalence (r = -0.589, p = 0.001), early marriage and stunting (r= 0.528, p= 0.005), diarrhea prevalence and stunting (r= 0.647, p=0.001). Health insurance as a protective factor of stunting. Regions with health insurance have 38.2% lower risk of stunting compared to regions without health insurance (OR = 0.618, 95% CI: 0.369–0.535). Diarrhea as a risk factor of stunting, regions with diarrhea had 1,84 times higher risk of stunting than regions without diarrhea (OR = 1.841, 95% CI: 1.091–3.106).Conclusions: Prevalence of stunting in West Java shows a widespread distribution pattern with high concentrations in the eastern, western, and southeastern regions of West Java. The western and eastern regions have specific obstacles related to poverty, early marriage, diarrhea and having health insurance. Strategies to reduce the prevalence of stunting must involve increasing economic prosperity, expanding health insurance coverage, and increasing access to sanitation to control diarrhea. Comprehensive and integrated interventions are needed to reduce prevalence of stunting. KEYWORD: diarrhea; early marriage; pneumonia; poverty; stunting; universal health coverageReceived: 14 Mar 2025; Revised: 28 Nov 2024; Accepted: 18 Mar 2025; Available online: 30 May 2025; Published: 31 Mar 2025.

Abstract

Background: Young people, especially at boarding schools, generate a large amount of food waste that may be addressed through targeted and persuasive education strategies based on context. Objectives: This study aimed to develop and evaluate nudging posters to reduce food waste behavior among adolescents. Methods: A descriptive design was used to assess the validity and reliability of four posters. Three expert panelists provided feedback to the researchers to determine the validity of the posters' content. To assess poster reliability, 60 adolescents rated the posters using a Likert scale. Data were analyzed in Excel for Aiken's V analysis and in SPSS version 25 for Spearman’s correlation and Cronbach's alpha (CCA). Results: According to the validity test, Posters 2 and 4 had the highest Aiken’s V value (0.889) for color harmony, layout, and content flow. The most valid components were the contextually appropriate and scientifically accurate content. The least valid components were the completeness of content and how well the message was emphasized (Aiken’s V=0.444 to 0.666). Language was generally the weakest component, but its validity improved when using a style that matched adolescent characteristics. Reliability analysis confirmed that the evaluation instruments were valid and reliable. Posters 1, 2, and 4 showed significant item correlations (p-value<0.05) with Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.983, indicating excellent internal consistency. Poster 3 contained one invalid item, though this did not affect overall reliability. Conclusions: The study concluded that the developed posters are valid and reliable as a form of nudging media. They demonstrate potential as effective educational tools to influence teenagers’ behavior and reduce food waste in boarding school settings.

Abstract

Anemia among adolescent girls remains a public health concern in Indonesia and is linked to low dietary diversity and inadequate nutrient intake. Despite existing school meal programs, evidence of their effects without formal nutrition education remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a school meal program on knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to balanced nutrition, anemia, and hygiene among female students. A quasi-experimental one-group pre–post test design was conducted with 80 grade-10 students at the State Vocational High School 1 Bogor, selected purposively during a four-week period from July to August 2025. KAP scores were collected using validated questionnaires and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge (mean score 6,0 to 7.0; p= 0,043) and attitudes (median 8,0 to 10,0; p= 0,020) after one month of intervention, while practices remained unchanged (mean score 24,0 to 24,0; p= 0,371). Exposure to school meals and external nutritional information, particularly from social media, likely contributed to the improvement in knowledge and attitudes. However, unchanged practices may be due to short intervention duration, low household income, and limited access to diverse healthy foods. In conclusion, these findings highlight that free school meals can enhance knowledge and attitudes even without direct education; however, sustained behavioral change requires longer interventions, supportive environments, and parental involvement

Abstract

Low birth weight (LBW, <2,500 g) remains a critical public health problem, contributing to neonatal mortality and long-term risk of non-communicable diseases, and national estimates in Indonesia indicate a prevalence ranging from approximately 6.2% to 11.7%. Parity and interpregnancy interval (IPI) are important reproductive determinants of perinatal outcomes, and their effects may be modified by socioeconomic status (SES). This study aimed to investigate the association between parity and IPI with LBW and to assess whether SES modifies these associations in a prospective cohort of pregnant women in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 120 women (poor households n=48; non-poor households n=72) were recruited purposively from community health centers and a maternity hospital/clinic. Inclusion criteria were gestational age 26–35 weeks, maternal age 20–35 years, parity 1–2, non-smoker, and provision of informed consent. Pre-pregnancy BMI was obtained through maternal recall of the last measured height and weight before conception. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s χ² tests for baseline comparisons and stratified logistic regression models to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals. The prevalence of LBW was higher among women with non-optimal IPI (<24 or >60 months and primigravida) compared to those with optimal IPI (24–60 months). Multiparity showed a protective tendency against LBW, particularly among non-poor women. SES significantly modified the association between IPI and LBW (p for interaction <0.05). These findings suggest that multiparity may reduce LBW risk, whereas non-optimal IPI increases it, with SES acting as an effect modifier. Strengthening preconception counseling on birth spacing and targeted support for low-SES families are warranted

Abstract

Anemia is a serious global public health issue with the highest prevalence in adolescent girls. This study aimed to analyze the relationships among body image, eating behaviour, and the adequacy of energy and nutrient intake with anemia status in adolescent girls. This study used a cross-sectional design with 105 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data on subject characteristics were collected using a questionnaire, body image was assessed using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), eating behaviour using the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ), nutrient adequacy level using 2 × 24 H food recall, and hemoglobin levels were measured using HemoCue 301. Data were analysed using the Spearman Rank test. The results showed that 28.6% of the subjects had anemia. Based on bivariate analysis, there was no correlation between body image and anemia status (r=-0.108, p =0.271). There was also no correlation between emotional eating, external eating, and restrained eating (p>0.05) and anemia status. Similarly, energy (r= 0.133, p=0.177), vitamin B9 (r=0.169, p=0.085), and vitamin C (r=0.016, p=0.873) were not significantly correlation with anemia status. However, adequacy level of protein (r=0.288, p=0.003), iron (r= 0.194, p=0.048), and vitamin B12 (r= 0.216, p=0.027) were significantly positive correlation with anemia status. This study indicates that the majority of subjects had a negative body image, tended to display external eating behavior, and generally had insufficient nutrient intake. Therefore, nutrition education for adolescents is needed, with a focus on promoting healthy and high-quality eating habits.
