Abstract

Teaching English online is considered problematic. The availability of a support system and internet quota is the main obstacle. This has an impact on the low ability of students. The purpose of this study is to analyze the abilities and constraints of teachers in preparing lesson plans and student obstacles in EFL learning through Google Meet during the Covid-19 pandemic. The sample of this research is a seventh-grade EFL teacher and also 60 seventh-grade junior high school students. The design applied is a mixed method. Data collection uses three instruments: a rating scale, teacher constraints, and student constraints in EFL through Google Meet. The study results indicate that in preparing the lesson plans, teachers are less capable and have several obstacles in choosing learning methods or techniques, selecting instruments and evaluation techniques, and selecting learning media. In addition, the results of the study indicate that students do not understand the material in lesson plans 3 and 4 and do not like to use Google Meet in learning English based on lesson plans 1.3 and 4. This is related to the limitations of students about it. This research implies that EFL teachers provide online learning plans and focus on selecting techniques or methods, evaluation processes, and media.

Abstract

A large number of teachers are adopting one-size-fits-all teaching instruction for all students. However, the diversity of student characteristics should require teaching strategies that can meet various mixed abilities in the classroom. The study focused on analyzing the implementation of differentiated instruction and investigating the challenges encountered by the teacher in implementing differentiated instruction in teaching during the pandemic of Covid-19 in Senior High School. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research design assisted by observation and an interview. The researcher, observation sheet, interview guide, and documents were used as instruments to obtain the data. The participants of the study consisted of the researcher, an English teacher, and thirty-six students from class PBB 1. The data of the study were analyzed through components of the data analysis interactive model which included three concurrent activities such as data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings showed the implementation of differentiated instruction was partial. The teacher differentiated content, process, and product by following students' interests and learning profiles. However, the differentiation based on student readiness levels was not visible. The teacher only used eLearning, Zoom Video Conference, and WhatsApp groups, similar to how teachers commonly conducted online learning. In using differentiated instruction, the teacher encountered challenges associated with students' participation in a virtual class, a large number of students, a lack of time for planning, and group activities in learning that were limited.

Abstract

There are important areas that have not been fully investigated. The use of chatbots to improve students' language learning abilities presents various advantages and obstacles. This study explores the integration of Chatbots in English language instruction for EFL learners, focusing on their impact on learning implementation experiences, advantages, and limitations. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards, the research reviewed articles from 2019 to 2024 to ensure a comprehensive analysis. A total of 998 publications were identified through Google Scholar, with search terms such as "chatbot," "AI chatbot," and "Chatbot implementation among EFL learners in English language learning." After an extensive screening process, including duplicate removal, inclusion, and exclusion criteria, 10 empirical, open-access studies were selected for review. The findings reveal that ChatGPT significantly enhances writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills by providing immediate and personalized feedback. It also fosters engagement and motivation while supporting cultural exploration and intercultural competence. However, limitations include reduced efficacy in developing speaking and listening skills, technical challenges, and ethical concerns. The study concludes that while ChatGPT is a valuable tool, it should complement, not replace, traditional teaching methods to ensure a balanced and effective learning experience.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of using DeepL on EFL students' writing skills. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design with quasi experimental and open-ended interviews was used in this research. Through purposive sampling, seventy-one EFL students from North Bali, Indonesia participated in the quasi-experimental phase, with ten additional students volunteering for interview sessions. The writing test data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis, while the interview transcripts were subjected to Interactive Model analysis. The research results show that there is a medium effect (0.52) of using DeepL on EFL students' writing skills. The interactive model analysis revealed students' positive responses to DeepL features such as autocorrect and alternative word suggestions, which facilitated improved grammatical accuracy, an enjoyable learning experience, increased language proficiency, and increased self-confidence. However, there are challenges such as connectivity issues and unfamiliarity with the application that hinder its effectiveness. In conclusion, DeepL shows potential as a transformative tool in language acquisition and writing instruction, although there are certain obstacles that need to be overcome in order to achieve optimal effectiveness.
