Abstract

Background: Social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies are critical for children’s academic engagement and psychosocial well-being. Martial arts, which integrate structured practice, ethical instruction, and social interaction, are increasingly implemented in primary education; however, their effects on SEL outcomes in primary-school-aged children have not yet been systematically synthesized. Objectives: This systematic review aims to examine the effects of martial arts interventions on emotion regulation, executive function, and empathy among primary school children aged 6–12 years. Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were conducted in Scopus, PubMed, SAGE Journals, SpringerLink, and Emerald Insight up to August 2025. Eligibility criteria were established using the PICOS framework. Nine empirical studies published between 2015 and 2025 were included. Study selection, data extraction, and risk-of-bias assessment were independently performed by two reviewers using Covidence, with RoB 2 applied to randomized studies and the JBI checklist to non-randomized designs. Owing to methodological heterogeneity, findings were synthesized narratively. Findings/Results: School-based and curriculum-integrated martial arts interventions were associated with improvements in children’s emotion regulation, executive functioning, and empathy. Positive outcomes were most evident in programs incorporating structured practice, reflective or mindfulness-based activities, cooperative learning, and autonomy-supportive pedagogy. Effects varied according to program duration, instructional fidelity, and pedagogical design, with limited or inconsistent findings reported for short-term or extracurricular interventions lacking explicit socioemotional components. Conclusion: Martial arts can be an effective pedagogical approach for enhancing SEL-related psychosocial competencies in primary education when delivered through structured, value-based programs. Future studies should prioritize standardized curricula, robust experimental designs, and longitudinal follow-up to determine the sustainability of intervention effects.

Abstract

Sports injuries not only affect physical condition, but also influence athletes’ mental development during the recovery process and return to training. This study aims to analyse the relationship between social support and athletes mental development after injury, as well as to examine differences in mental development based on the severity of the injury. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was used by distributing an online questionnaire to 51 athletes from various sports, including athletes undergoing rehabilitation at the Sport Therapist Injury Laboratory,Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The instruments used were the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Injury Psychological Readiness to Return to Sport (I-PRRS). Data analysis was performed using parametric statistical techniques. The result revealed a weak positive connection between social support and post-injury mental development (r = 0.235), which was not statistically significant (p > 0.05) and no significant differences across injury severity levels (F = 2.175; p > 0.05). These findings indicate that variations in injury severity and perceived social support do not significantly influence athletes’ psychological readiness to return to sport.Overall, the findings indicate that internal psychological factors have a greater influence on mental recovery after injury than external help or injury classification. The results of the study showed that social support had no significant relationship with the mental development of athletes after injury, and there were no differences in mental development based on the severity of the injury. These findings confirm that internal psychological contributions play a more important role in the mental recovery of athletes.

Abstract

Healthy lifestyle habits during adolescence, especially among junior high school students, are an important stage in supporting long-term physical development and fitness. This study aims to determine the relationship between diet, physical activity, and rest patterns with fitness focused on the cardiorespiratory endurance of junior high school students. The study used a cross-sectional design and involved 60 eighth and ninth grade students at junior high school 1 Panggarangan, Lebak Regency, Banten. Data were collected using the AFHC questionnaire for dietary patterns, the IPAQ for physical activity, the PSQI for sleep patterns, and the Beep Test to measure fitness. Data analysis includes descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation, and multiple linear regression. The results of the study show that diet is related to physical activity, where students with healthier eating habits tend to be more active. However, no relationship was found between diet, physical activity, and sleep patterns and fitness levels. Regression analysis also shows that these three variables do not contribute significantly to variations in student fitness. These findings indicate that cardiorespiratory fitness is influenced by factors other than the daily habits measured in this study. This study provides an initial overview of the lifestyle and fitness conditions of junior high school students, and can serve as a basis for schools and related parties to develop fitness improvement programs.
