Abstract

Every year, adolescent pregnancy cases in Javanese society become challenging. Reproductive health education must be provided before the child enters puberty despite experiencing cultural barriers in its delivery. This study aims to explore children’s knowledge and attitudes about puberty and reproductive health to analyze the need for reproductive health education for children living in Javanese culture. This cross-sectional study sampled 174 children aged 9-11 years in the capital city of Central Java. Children in this study are female (54.6%) and male (45.4%), and 20.1% of them have already experienced puberty. As many as 48.9% of children have low knowledge, especially about puberty signs and menstruation. Most children have good attitudes about reproductive health, but 6.9% are permissive. There is no significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes (p-value=0.606). Puberty status is also unrelated to children’s knowledge (p-value=0.678) and attitudes (p-value=0.291). Permissive attitudes regarding adolescent pregnancy need to be highlighted. This is potentially harmful to children, especially if the child does not immediately engage in proper reproductive health education. The reproductive health educational model does not need to separate children’s classes based on their puberty status. The Ministry of Health and Education needs to improve children’s reproductive health knowledge by considering the character of Javanese society, which is still taboo.

Abstract

Background: Coronary heart disease (CHD) ranks seventh among non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Indonesia, with a projected increase in mortality by 2030 to approximately 23,6 million. The rehabilitation of CHD, which constitutes long-term treatment, significantly depends on patient adherence. Objective: This study aims to investigate the determinants of patient adherence behavior at the Bandung Heart Clinic. Methods: It employed a crosssectional research design, gathering data from 471 CHD patients with a history of atherosclerosis at the clinic between January and October 2022. The minimum sample size of 80 respondents, calculated using the Lemeshow formula, was increased to 150 to mitigate potential dropouts. The research instrument used was a questionnaire that had been validated and deemed reliable, except for one question regarding family support. Sampling was conducted using accidental sampling and involved interview data collection. Results: Bivariate data analysis, using the chi-square test, indicated significant associations between gender (p=0.09), employment status (p=0.01), health insurance participation (p=0.012), healthcare accessibility (p=0.022), family support (p=0.006), and treatment motivation (p=0.22) with patient adherence behavior. Additionally, female patients (OR=3,316) patients who are members of a health insurance (OR=2,617), patients with high treatment motivation (OR=1,983), patients who receive support from their families (OR=2,476) are more likely to exhibit adherence behavior compared to those who are not. Conclusion: In summary, it can be concluded that gender, employment status, health insurance participation, family support, and treatment motivation have significant correlations with patient adherence behavior in the context of CHD at the Bandung Heart Clinic.

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant public health concern, impacting physical growth and impeding children's development. Mothers, who play a crucial role in stimulating children's development, often encounter barriers in providing effective stimulation, primarily due to limited access to appropriate resources and information. Online education can bridge this gap by offering easily accessible learning. This aim of this study was to determine the effect of online education on maternal knowledge and attitudes in providing developmental stimulation for stunting toddlers. A quasi-experimental research design was employed, comprising a treatment group and a control group, each consisting of 46 mothers with stunting toddlers, sampled purposively. The treatment group received an online developmental stimulation educational intervention through WhatsApp groups for twelve meetings, each lasting 1.5 to 2 hours. Meanwhile, the control group participated in a stunting assistance program provided by the community health centers (Puskesmas). To compare the knowledge and attitudes between groups, Mann-Whitney and independent Student t-test were used. The assessment of intervention effects on knowledge and attitudes was conducted using Wilcoxon and paired Student t-test within each group. Following the educational intervention on developmental stimulation, there was a significant increase in knowledge; however, there was no significant difference in attitudes. The treatment group (mean score 3.9±1.76) had a higher increase in knowledge scores compared to the control group (2.0±2.25) with a p<0.001. Nonetheless, no significant difference in attitudes was observed between the two groups with the mean change scores was 5.8±15.31 in treatment group and 2.5±18.69 for control group, with a p=0.335. This study suggests that providing online education leads to increased knowledge scores but does not impact attitudes significantly. Additional educational approaches should be considered to enhance maternal attitudes.

Abstract

The initial physiological change in adolescent girls is the onset of menstruation. The most prevalent challenge they face regarding menstruation is primary dysmenorrhea, characterized by persistent or intermittent pelvic pain in the lower abdomen. The aim of this study was to investigate the influences of stress levels and physical activities on primary dysmenorrhea. A cross-sectional was conducted in Cirebon, Indonesia, in 2023 included young women who had never given birth (nullipara), aged 17–25 years old, had menstruated, and had no history of smoking and alcohol. The data were collected using a set of questionnaires consisting of the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) to determine primary dysmenorrhea pain, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 42 (DASS 42) to determine the level of stress and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to determine physical activity. Pearson's correlation test was used to assess the correlation between the variables (stress levels, physical activity, and dysmenorrhea). A total of 150 young women were included in the study. Moderate stress levels (23.3%) and high physical activity (90.7%) were the most prevalent categories observed among studied participants. Approximately 42% of them experienced mild dysmenorrhea pain. Our analysis indicated that stress levels and physical activities had strong positive correlations with dysmenorrhea pain levels, with r=0.782 and r=0.748, respectively, with both had p<0.001. This highlights that controlling stress could be beneficial in preventing dysmenorrhea pain among young women.

Abstract

Adolescents who can think critically and make the right decisions reported delaying the practice of sexual pre-marital. This study describes the cognitive life skills, knowledge, and attitudes in the reproductive health context among primary school students. This research is a cross-sectional study conducted on 12.689 grade 4-6 primary school students in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. The Mann-Whitney U-test investigates the differences between male and female students’ decision-making skills, critical thinking skills, knowledge, and attitude. Most children (62.1%) stated that deciding something was difficult. Only 36.8% of children get ideas from other people when having a task to do. There are differences in knowledge (p-value=0.000) and attitudes (p-value=0.000) about reproductive health, as well as critical thinking skills (p-value=0.002) between males and females. There is no significant difference between males and females in terms of decision-making skills (p-value=0.202). There are differences in knowledge and attitudes about reproductive health and critical thinking skills between male and female students. However, there is no significant difference between males and females regarding decisionmaking skills. The Ministry of Health should design a life skills education method for pre-pubertal children considering sex segregation.

Abstract

Dating has become a trend in today's youth. Psychological conditions are still unstable and are one of the triggers for violence among adolescents, and in general, female adolescents become victims. However, the female adolescents maintained the relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a phenomenological study of dating violence among female adolescents. This research is included in the type of qualitative research. Data were obtained from five key informants and five triangular informants who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data was collected using 14 questions items submitted using the In-depth Interview technique. The interview results were transcribed using computer aided qualitative data analysis software. Based on the results of the interviews, dating is a form of self-actualization to get love and to exist among adolescents. They hope the current partner can become a life partner when they have a family. This is their reason for tolerating physical, psychological, or sexual violence perpetrated by their partner. So, female adolescents are aware that they experience violence. However, they could not avoid it because they hoped their current partner would become a life partner These results confirm the urgency for adolesence dating violence (ADV) program implementation.
