Abstract

Background: Mouthwash is a liquid preparation that plays an important role in maintaining oral health. An ideal formulation should possess antibacterial effectiveness, physicochemical stability, and acceptable organoleptic properties. Streptococcus mutans is the primary pathogenic bacterium responsible for halitosis and dental caries. Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) and physic nut (Jatropha multifida L.) leaves are known to contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which have potential antibacterial activity. Objective: This study aimed to formulate peppermint and physic nut leaf extracts into a stable mouthwash preparation and evaluate its antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans. Methods: The extracts were prepared using maceration with ethanol as a solvent. The mouthwash formulations were developed with three variations of extract concentrations (2%, 2.5%, and 3%). The preparations were then evaluated for their physical stability (organoleptic properties and pH) and tested for antibacterial activity against S. mutans using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Inhibition zone data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan’s test. Results: Physicochemical evaluation showed that all formulations remained stable over 28 days of observation, with a pH of 6, which is compatible with the oral cavity. Antibacterial testing demonstrated an increase in inhibition zone diameter with higher extract concentrations: 10.33 mm (2%), 11.1 mm (2.5%), and 11.9 mm (3%). These results were comparable to the positive control, Betadine gargle (11.95 mm). The negative control showed no inhibition zone. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) among the concentrations. Conclusion: The combination mouthwash containing peppermint and physic nut leaf extracts at a concentration of 3% was found to be the most stable formulation and exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity, comparable to the commercial reference product. Thus, this combination extract has potential to be developed as a natural antibacterial agent for oral health.

Abstract

A problem that is often found in Indonesia, especially on the feet and causes many people to lack self-confidence, is smelly feet. This odor is caused by bacteria on the skin and inside shoes. Bacteria like Staphylococcus epidermidis produce an unpleasant smell by degrading leucine from sweat, leading to the formation of isovaleric acid, which emits a foul odor. This issue can be addressed using plant materials such as jeruk purut leaves (Citrus hystrix) and robusta coffee leaves (Coffea canephora). This research uses an experimental method. Jeruk purut leaves and robusta coffee leaves are extracted through maceration and then formulated into a foot spray with extract concentrations of 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5%. The evaluation results indicate that the foot spray formulation meets the stability test parameters, including organoleptic properties and pH. In terms of hedonic testing, panelists preferred Formula 1, and no formula caused skin irritation. Antibacterial testing of all formulations showed strong antibacterial activity, with inhibition zone diameters of 11.9 mm for Formula 1 (1.5% concentration), 12.4 mm for Formula 2 (2% concentration), and 12.8 mm for Formula 3 (2.5% concentration) against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA showed that the antibacterial activity of the foot spray in inhibiting bacterial growth was significant at a 0.005 level, with a probability value (significance) of 0.00 < 0.05, indicating that the antibacterial activity of the foot spray can affect the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Abstract

Background: Kandis tamarind has various activities, such as antioxidant, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial. This study aimed to determine the total polyphenol content of kandis acid fruit and the types of phenolic compounds contained in kandis acid fruit. This type of research was experimental, using 70% ethanol solvent. The research method used was a polyphenol qualitative test, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and LC-MS. The results of qualitative measurements showed that the samples contained polyphenolic compounds. The results of the polyphenol test on the kandis acid fruit sample on 1% FeCl3 reagent and diazo reagent got positive results, while the Millon reagent got negative results. The study's results show that the determination of the levels of polyphenol content in kandis acid fruit extract was measured using UV-VIS spectrophotometry by adhering to the working principle of Folin-Ciocalteau. The proof of polyphenol content used the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent because this reagent can react with a group of polyphenolic compounds to form a concentrated solution whose absorbance can be measured. The higher the sample concentration, the higher the absorbance value. The results of determining the polyphenol content of the kandis acid fruit extract using uv-vis spectrophotometry had a polyphenol compound component of 61.1015 mg GAE/g sample. The results of the LC-MS analysis for the highest phenolic compound, namely the type of vanillic acid, amounted to 14.21%.

Abstract

Introduction Sprains and fractured bones are treated with spider lily leaves (Crinum asiaticum L.). Alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and triterpenoids are among the chemical components found in spider lily leaves. The most significant phytochemicals in plants with wide biological advantages for humans are bioactive flavonoids. The purpose of: The study aimed to isolate flavonoid components from spider lily leaves. Methods: This study was descriptive, using the following steps: plant material collection and preparation, sample processing, simplicia characterization, extract preparation, phytochemical screening, hydrolysis, fractionation, analysis using paper chromatography (KKt), and compound isolation using preparative paper chromatography. The isolates were tested for purity using one-way and two-way KKt, and they were identified using UV-Vis spectrophotometry with a shear reagent. The results: The results of the characterization showed that the water content was 7.21%, the water-soluble extract was 11.21%, the ethanol-soluble extract was 9.23%, the total ash content was 1.99%, and the acid-insoluble ash content was 0.81%. The screening findings indicated the presence of flavonoid chemicals. The KKt analysis results revealed that the best mobile phase was 5% acetic acid with ammonia vapor specks, and the preparative KKt isolation results yielded a single blue isolate, which was then identified by UV-Vis spectrophotometry using a shear reagent, resulting in maximum wavelength absorption (max) at band II of 253nm, presumably identifying the isoflavone group of flavonoids. Conclusion: The conclusion showed the ethyl acetate fraction of spider lily leaves could be separated using paper chromatography and that identification by spectrophotometry UV-Vis using a shear reagent wasolate, which was assumed to be an isoflavone group component.
