Abstract

Introduction: Indonesia possesses high biodiversity, including the Jatropha multifida L. plant, which contains secondary metabolites with potential antimicrobial properties. Traditionally, the leaves of Jatropha multifida have been used as herbal medicine, particularly for inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. Objective: This study aims to determine the total flavonoid content in the ethanol extract of Jatropha multifida leaves and to compare the effectiveness of two extraction methods, maceration and Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE), in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans. Methods: The research stages included the characterization of the powdered simplicia, extraction of Jatropha multifida leaves using 96% ethanol by maceration and MAE methods, and phytochemical screening. The total flavonoid content was determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 431 nm. Antifungal activity against Candida albicans was tested for each extract at specific concentrations. Results: The ethanol extract obtained through maceration showed a total flavonoid content of 34.7089 ± 0.1206 mg QE/g, while the MAE method yielded 32.1923 ± 0.1113 mg QE/g. The highest antifungal activity was observed in the MAE extract at a 75% concentration, producing an inhibition zone of 24.7 mm. The maceration extract at the same concentration produced an inhibition zone of 23.7 mm. As a positive control, 2% ketoconazole resulted in an inhibition zone of 31.4 mm. Conclusion: Although the maceration method produced a higher total flavonoid content, the extract obtained through the MAE method demonstrated more potent antifungal activity against Candida albicans at the same concentration.

Abstract

Background: Curcuma zedoaria (Berg.) Roscoe, commonly known as white turmeric, is a plant from the Zingiberaceae family that contains bioactive compounds such as curcumin, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. These compounds have potential as natural antiperspirants due to their astringent and antimicrobial properties, which can reduce sweat production and prevent body odor. The use of synthetic antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride often causes skin irritation, highlighting the need for safer, natural alternatives. Objective: This study aims to formulate an antiperspirant cream using white turmeric (Curcuma zedoaria (Berg.) Roscoe) extract with good physical quality and to evaluate the effectiveness of various concentrations in inhibiting sweat production. Methods: This experimental study involved extracting white turmeric using 96% ethanol through maceration, followed by concentration with a rotary evaporator. The antiperspirant cream was formulated with varying extract concentrations. Physical quality evaluations included organoleptic testing, homogeneity, pH, stability, viscosity, adhesion, spreadability, cream type, as well as irritation and antiperspirant tests on volunteers. Results: Phytochemical screening showed that the white turmeric extract contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. The cream with a 17.5% extract concentration demonstrated the highest antiperspirant effectiveness compared to 7.5% and 12.5% concentrations. All formulations met physical quality standards, including pH (4.5–6.5), viscosity (2,700–23,020 cP), and 14-day stability without significant changes. Conclusion: The white turmeric-based antiperspirant cream met physical quality standards and exhibited significant antiperspirant effects, particularly at a 17.5% concentration. This study demonstrates the potential of white turmeric as a safe and effective natural active ingredient in antiperspirant formulations.

Abstract

Background: Mouthwash is a liquid preparation that plays an important role in maintaining oral health. An ideal formulation should possess antibacterial effectiveness, physicochemical stability, and acceptable organoleptic properties. Streptococcus mutans is the primary pathogenic bacterium responsible for halitosis and dental caries. Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) and physic nut (Jatropha multifida L.) leaves are known to contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which have potential antibacterial activity. Objective: This study aimed to formulate peppermint and physic nut leaf extracts into a stable mouthwash preparation and evaluate its antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans. Methods: The extracts were prepared using maceration with ethanol as a solvent. The mouthwash formulations were developed with three variations of extract concentrations (2%, 2.5%, and 3%). The preparations were then evaluated for their physical stability (organoleptic properties and pH) and tested for antibacterial activity against S. mutans using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Inhibition zone data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan’s test. Results: Physicochemical evaluation showed that all formulations remained stable over 28 days of observation, with a pH of 6, which is compatible with the oral cavity. Antibacterial testing demonstrated an increase in inhibition zone diameter with higher extract concentrations: 10.33 mm (2%), 11.1 mm (2.5%), and 11.9 mm (3%). These results were comparable to the positive control, Betadine gargle (11.95 mm). The negative control showed no inhibition zone. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) among the concentrations. Conclusion: The combination mouthwash containing peppermint and physic nut leaf extracts at a concentration of 3% was found to be the most stable formulation and exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity, comparable to the commercial reference product. Thus, this combination extract has potential to be developed as a natural antibacterial agent for oral health.
