Abstract

Patchouli oil and citronella oil are Aceh’s leading commodities that produce essential oils with various benefits, including natural antibacterial properties. However, their utilization in household products remains limited, while most communities still rely on chemically based floor cleaners at relatively high prices. In response to this potential, a community service program was conducted in Pango Deah Village by empowering beneficiaries of the Family Hope Program (PKH) to innovate in producing antibacterial floor cleaning soap based on patchouli and citronella oils. The activities included socialization on household hygiene, technical training on soap production, hands-on practice through a learning-by-doing approach, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test assessments. The evaluation results showed an increase in the average score from 78.50% to 99.00% after the training, indicating a significant improvement in participants’ understanding and practical skills. All participants (100%) expressed high satisfaction with the content, methods, and overall benefits of the program. The resulting floor cleaning soap exhibited a distinctive aroma of patchouli and citronella, as well as good product stability, making it a promising environmentally friendly household product with market potential. Participants’ enthusiasm was demonstrated by their intention to further develop the product as a home-based business. This program is expected to enhance community skills, promote economic independence, and encourage the sustainable utilization of local resources.

Abstract

Premature aging is often induced by oxidative stress resulting from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which produces free radicals that harm lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. The Ambon banana peel (Musa paradisiaca L.), often considered waste, is abundant in bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and phenolics, which demonstrate considerable antioxidant properties, thereby establishing it as a promising natural resource for anti-aging cosmetics. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate the efficacy of ethanol extract from Ambon banana peel (Musa paradisiaca L.) as a prospective anti-aging agent in stick mask formulations. The extract was obtained through maceration with 96% ethanol and subsequently analyzed for phytochemical constituents, antioxidant activity using DPPH and ABTS assays, and formulated into mask sticks with extract concentrations of 1% (F1), 3% (F2), and 5% (F3). Physical attributes such as organoleptic properties, uniformity, drying duration, and stability were assessed, while in vivo efficacy was examined in mice subjected to UV radiation, followed by histopathological analysis of epidermal thickness and melanocyte quantity. The extract demonstrated high levels of flavonoids (224.184 ± 0.252 mg QE/g) and phenolics (197.279 ± 0.250 mg GAE/g), with IC50 values of (12.88 ± 0.12) µg/mL and (17.15 ± 0.11) µg/mL in DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively. The stick mask formulations demonstrated adequate physical properties and stability, while in vivo evaluations indicated protective effects against UV-induced skin damage, particularly in the 5% formulation. The results indicate that Ambon banana peel (Musa paradisiaca L.) extract can be developed into an effective anti-aging mask stick with notable antioxidant and photoprotective properties.

Abstract

Irrational medication use remains a significant public health concern, often stemming from inadequate knowledge of symptom-based drug selection and self-medication practices. This community service activity aimed to enhance public knowledge on rational medication use, specifically focusing on drug classification, reading medication labels, and appropriate dosage instructions. Employing a community-based participatory approach, the activity was conducted at the UPT Puskesmas Teladan and involved 17 purposively selected visitors. The intervention, delivered through interactive lectures, two-way discussions, and medication label simulations supported by educational leaflets, was evaluated using pre-test and post-test instruments. The results demonstrated a notable improvement in participants' understanding, with average scores increasing from 4.94 (low category) to 7.94 (good category) on a 10-point scale. This improvement suggests that a targeted, interactive educational approach is feasible and holds promise for strengthening public knowledge on prudent medication use. This initiative highlights the potential for integrating similar community-based education programs into primary health services to promote safer self-medication behaviors.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of nanomaterial-based rheumatoid arthritis (RA) research has produced a fragmented body of literature, limiting clear recognition of major journals, influential contributors, collaboration patterns, and shifting research priorities. This study presents a two-decade bibliometric mapping of nanomaterials in RA with an inflammation-focused perspective. English-language publications from 2005 to 2025 were collected from Scopus using a nanomaterial–RA–inflammation search strategy, yielding 5,110 initial records. Data were refined in OpenRefine through deduplication, author-name harmonization, and keyword normalization. Following eligibility screening, 720 articles were retained for core bibliometric analysis. Biblioshiny, supported by the Bibliometrix R package, was used to measure annual publication trends, productive sources, leading authors, institutional output, and collaborative networks. Conceptual development was assessed through keyword co-occurrence analysis and thematic mapping, with network visualizations generated in VOSviewer. Results indicate accelerated publication growth in the recent period, with outputs concentrated in drug delivery and biomaterials-related journals. Scientific productivity was driven by a limited group of countries and institutions, reflecting hub-based knowledge production. Keyword and thematic analyses identified targeted drug delivery and macrophage polarization as motor themes, while PI3K–AKT and Hedgehog signaling emerged as developing topics. Overall, the field shows rapid growth and organized thematic evolution.
