Abstract

This report investigates the biodiversity of marine animals, focusing on extinct sponge species near Lesbos Island based on Aristotle's descriptions. Mujito, introduced in the literature review, is from the GeoMaud expedition in Antarctica. Various instrumental analysis methods, such as ESI mass spectrometry and NMR, contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the compounds, particularly in the context of Alzheimer's research. The pharmacantarctic literature study concludes that Antarctic Mumijo, particularly from Mujito fossil deposits, holds significant biomedical potential. It exhibits organic components like wax esters with notable biomedical activities, particularly in treating bone diseases. Additionally, Mumijo's composition resembles non-fossil samples, with wax esters dominating and unique components like α-glyceryl fatty alcohol ethers indicating neuroprotective potential. The research suggests promising applications in Oriental medicine, addressing wounds, skin diseases, tuberculosis, respiratory diseases, and neurological conditions like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Overall, Antarctic Mumijo showcases diverse biomedical prospects, emphasizing its organic components' therapeutic value

Abstract

Hypertension, often termed "The Silent Disease" due to its asymptomatic nature, remains a global health concern. This study investigates the comparative effectiveness of Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs) and Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEIs) in managing hypertension, focusing on Valsartan and Candesartan (ARBs) and Ramipril and Captopril (ACEIs). Analyzing retrospective data from Community Health Centers in Solo City, the research aims to provide nuanced insights into outpatient care scenarios. The meticulous statistical analysis, utilizing SPSS and t-tests, uncovers notable differences, particularly favoring Valsartan and Ramipril within their respective drug classes. These findings carry substantial implications for healthcare practitioners, aiding in the development of precise treatment guidelines. Understanding the comparative clinical effectiveness, safety profiles, and tolerability of ARBs and ACEIs ensures a more personalized approach to hypertension management

Abstract

Skin aging is a natural process influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This process often leads to various skin problems, including wrinkles, sagging, and hyperpigmentation. One of the main triggers of skin aging is oxidative stress, which produces reactive species oxygen (ROS) that can damage various components of the skin. Temulawak, locally known as Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb., has been traditionally used in Indonesia for various skin health conditions due to its antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-aging properties. This research aims to create a new formula of peel-off gel mask from temulawak extract and evaluate the preparation. Two formulations were made, with the second formulation modified by adding the fragrance oleum rosae to reduce the aroma of temulawak. Evaluation was conducted through a series of tests, including The results showed differences between the two formulations, especially in the organoleptic test where Formula 2 experienced changes in color and aroma. However, other parameters were relatively similar between the two formulations. The developed peel-off gel mask has the potential to improve skin health, further research is needed to understand product acceptance by the public, using approaches such as hedonic testing. This will help in developing products that are more suitable for consumer needs and preferences.

Abstract

Gastroenteritis is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by inflammation of the stomach and small intestine, often leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, vomit-ing, and abdominal pain. This study investigates the gastroprotective effects of Pepe-romia pellucida (Chinese betel) extract on histopathological features of the stomach in a mouse model of gastroenteritis. Male Swiss strain mice, aged 2-3 months, were treated with different doses of P. pellucida extract (100, 300, and 500 mg/kg BW) for 7 days after inducing gastroenteritis with Escherichia coli infection. Histopathological ex-amination showed that the extract significantly reduced cell degeneration, necrosis, and polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration in the stomach compared to the negative control group. The highest dose (500 mg/kg BW) exhibited the most prominent gastro-protective effect. These results suggest that P. pellucida possesses promising thera-peutic potential for gastroenteritis, possibly due to its bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. Further studies are needed to explore the underly-ing mechanisms and optimize its therapeutic application.

Abstract

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition characterized by an abnormal immune response to infection, leading to high mortality rates in intensive care units (ICUs) worldwide. Caspase-3, a crucial enzyme in the apoptosis pathway, plays a significant role in sep-sis-related cellular damage. This study investigates the anti-apoptotic potential of Paederia foetida L. leaf extract by examining its effect on Caspase-3 expression in an Escherichia coli-induced sepsis mice model. Male Balb/c mice were divided into six groups, including positive control, negative control, and treatment groups receiving varying doses of the extract (100 mg/kgBW, 300 mg/kgBW, and 500 mg/kgBW). Caspase-3 expression in the spleen was measured after 24 hours of treatment. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in Caspase-3 expression, particularly in the group treated with 500 mg/kgBW of the extract, indicating its anti-apoptotic effect. These findings suggest that P. foetida leaf extract may serve as a potential therapeutic agent for reducing cell apoptosis in sepsis, warranting further investigation into its mechanisms and clinical pharmacological field.
