Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is the cornerstone of infant health and one of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The advancement of information technology can be used to promote health, and providing information through messages on smartphone applications can improve breastfeeding awareness and adherence. Objectives: To determine which social media platforms effectively promote exclusive breastfeeding through nutrition education interventions. Methods: This study employed a meta-analysis method. The terms “breastfeeding,” “social media,” and “smartphone” were used to search for articles in multiple electronic journals, such as Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Articles that provide an intervention using smartphone media for groups of expectant mothers who wish to breastfeed their babies and mothers who have ceased breastfeeding and want to resume were selected. Forest plot analysis was performed using the STATA 12. Results: From 2018 to 2021, seven articles were obtained, with research conducted in the United States, India, Indonesia, Israel, and Brazil. The study’s findings revealed that a nutritional education intervention using Smartphones led to an average success rate of exclusive breastfeeding between the intervention group and the control group of 1.23 (7 studies), 95% CI (1.08 - 1.39); P = 0.000; and I2 = 97.1%. Conclusions: Intervention using smartphones by sending short messages daily and counselling by telephone every week can increase mothers’ knowledge and ability to provide exclusive breastfeeding to their infants. An intervention using smartphones to transmit daily text messages and weekly telephone counselling could enhance mothers’ knowledge and ability to breastfeed their children exclusively.

Abstract

Background and purpose: The indicators to assess food diversity in complementary feeding is minimum dietary diversity (MDD). In 2017, the proportion of MDD among 6-11-month-old children in Indonesia was 33.8%, which was the lowest among other age group and below the national rate. This study aims to explore factors associated with MDD among 6-11-month-old children in Indonesia. Methods: This study was a secondary data analysis of the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS), a crosssectional study involving 17,848 children across all provinces in Indonesia. The final samples included in this analysis were 1,593 children aged 6-11-month-old. Variables analyzed were parent’s education level, access to information, parent’s occupation, wealth index, and access to health facilities. Logistic regression model was applied to identify factors associated with MDD. Results: The proportion of MDD in this study was 35.1%. The highest food groups that were consumed were staple food, vitamin-A rich fruits and vegetables, and breastmilk. The final model showed factors which correlated significantly with complementary feeding practices that met MDD requirement were wealth index categorized as richer (OR=1.72; 95%CI: 1.16-2.55; p=0.007), wealth index categorized as richest (OR=2.42; 95%CI: 1.58-3.68; p<0.001) and using internet almost every day (OR=1.42; 95%CI: 1.05-1.91; p=0.023). Conclusion: Wealth index and internet use were independently associated with MDD. Online media should be considered as channel to spread information of complementary feeding diversity to children, while socio-economic factor which associated to food accessibility should be addressed by involving beyond health sector.

Abstract

COVID-19 has become a pandemic in the last 3 years worldwide and cases cause high mortality and morbidity. To reduce COVID-19 infection, we need to keep our immune system healthy. Several nutrients have been shown to have specific abilities to increase the power of the immune system, but their use in the treatment of COVID-19 is still being debated. This review aims to determine the role of minerals and synbiotics in increasing immunity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specific minerals such as zinc, selenium, iron and copper have promising potential to treat COVID-19 by reducing clinical impact, markers of inflammation, and improving immunological biomarkers. In addition to increasing mineral intake, maintaining a healthy immune system can also be done by improving the health of the gut microbiota. One of the therapies that is considered to have a positive impact on handling COVID-19 is using synbiotics (a combination of prebiotics and probiotics). However, the safety and efficacy of mineral and synbiotic supplementation in COVID-19 patients as adjunctive therapy still requires further research. Minerals and synbiotics can help boost the immune system and reduce symptoms during a COVID-19 infection.

Abstract

Ischemic stroke is a common degenerative disease in Indonesia caused by interrupted or restricted blood supply to part of brain, preventing it from getting oxygen and nutrients. Without sufficient blood supply, brain cells begin to die. Various treatments for ischemic stroke patients have been developed and implemented, but are still ineffective in treating or preventing brain damage. Curcumin is one of the bioactive compounds which mostly found in turmeric which is one of the main spices resource in Indonesia that has many benefits as a medicine. People have been making use of curcumin as a medicine for various diseases, one of which is stroke. Therefore, this systematic review analysed qualitatively the effect of curcumin on the brain condition after ischemic stroke. The method used in this study was a systematic review of 8 databases in the last 10 years, from 2012 to August 2022. Study included was only experimental study on rats. Based on 19 articles gathered, there was a decrement in ROS, COX-2, iNOS, NF-kB, TNF-α, IL-6, Bax, Caspase-9, Caspase-3, ICAM-1, MMP-9, neurological deficit score, and an increment in BCL-2, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) in rats receiving curcumin intervention either orally or intravenously. Curcumin affects the ischemic brain in a number of ways, namely as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, Blood-Brain-Barrier (BBB) protector, increasing neurogenesis, and reducing neurological deficits. It is concluded that curcumin has an elevating effect in protecting brain condition after an ischemic stroke.
