Abstract

Project Based Learning (PBL) is highly important to be suited to the student’s needs as a guide in writing research proposals. The objectives of the study were to (1) describe the PBL design based on the students’ needs, (2) identify the problems encountered during the project writing, (3) describe the scaffolding utilized, and (4) analyze the effect of PBL implementation on the quality of students’ research proposal. The research used mixed methods in the form of a research and development design using the ADDIE model (which consists of steps of analyzing needs, designing the product of PBL, developing, and implementing it, and conducting evaluation).  The participants were 20 respondents during the needs analysis, two lecturers, and three intact classes of 69 students during PBL implementation. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, a document study, and an experiment. A needs analysis was conducted using the Organizational Element Model (OEM), from which the PBL was developed. The data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative analyses. The findings revealed that the PBL designed based on students’ needs has characteristics such as it is in the form of a framework and has systematic stages of teaching, being technology friendly, and being supported with various scaffoldings. The problems encountered concerned both grammar and content. The implementation of the PBL framework was found to have a significant effect on students’ research proposal writing in Research Method Course and develop their independence and learning autonomy.

Abstract

This study was inspired by the lack of teaching techniques that could accommodate students’ speaking skills as the main indicator determining students’ success in learning English. The elicitation technique could be used by teachers to initiate students to speak during the learning process. A descriptive qualitative method was employed which aimed to investigate the types of elicitation techniques used, the way to implement them, and students’ responses to the elicitation techniques employed by the English teachers in motivating students to speak. There were two English teachers and ten students consisting of seventh and eighth grades involved as the participants in this study. Checklist, classroom observation, interview, and video audio recordings were conducted as the methods of data collection by means of observation checklist, observation sheet, interview guide, as well as video-audio recorders. The data were analyzed based on the category of elicitation techniques proposed by Cross (1992). The findings showed that there were 10 types of elicitation techniques used. Speech Prompts 44.5 (28.7%), WH Short-Answer Question 42.5 (27.4%), dan Yes-No Question 37 (23.9%) were the most frequent types used by the teachers in eliciting students to speak. In addition, it was also revealed that the elicitation techniques were employed by the teachers in all the teaching segments. Eight out of ten students positively responded by feeling motivated to speak in English. This indicated that the elicitation techniques used by the teachers could motivate students to speak in English.

Abstract

Over the years, many studies have investigated the learning strategies used by teachers, especially in learning English. The learning strategies studied are mostly seen from onsite and online learning, which recently occurred due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. However, only a few studies have discussed teachers' teaching and assessment strategies after learning are carried back to onsite learning. Therefore, this study aims to 1) observe teaching strategies in English classes during reconducted onsite learning and 2) observe assessment strategies in English classes during reconducted onsite learning. This research used qualitative research methods through classroom observation and interviews to obtain data from two high school English teachers in Buleleng, Bali. The results showed that the teacher used nine teaching strategies in the reconduct onsite learning process, including brainstorming, discussion, lecturing, independent study, assignments, quizzes or exercises, presentations, and summarizing. In addition, the teacher's assessment strategies during this transitional period are observation, assignments, and quizzes or tests. From this research, it can be concluded that teachers use various learning strategies, even though they have re-adapted to onsite learning. In addition, from the results of this study, two possible implications for teaching English were drawn. Keywords: Assessment Strategies, Onsite Learning, Teaching Strategies

Abstract

This study aimed to describe one of the language variations, namely dialect in social interaction, in the YouTube video entitled “gara gara don poh mau bunuh orang” and to describe the choice of language in social interaction. This study uses a qualitative research approach. This study uses ethnographic research to examine the social behavior of language and community communication and how language is applied based on related cultural concepts. The dialect used in the video is the Buleleng (North Bali) dialect. The choice of language used is transfer code and code mix. For accents, this video uses a Buleleng accent because in the video, there are many words typical of north Bali that have the characteristics of swear words. For syntax, some sentences have affixes that refer to the subject, there are words that are in the sentence but do not change the meaning of the sentence, and there are also structures that are commonly used in the video. Abstract

During teachers' adaptation to online learning, the Covid-19 case has shown a decline indicating that general health conditions are starting to improve. This has encouraged the government to re-implement face-to-face learning while still paying attention to health protocols. During the transition from online to onsite learning, teachers must adjust their strategy, especially the assessment strategy, because onsite learning differs from pre-pandemic onsite learning. Therefore, this research aims to describe the assessment strategies applied by teachers during the transition period. This research is descriptive qualitative research. Researchers used observation sheets, and interviews as instruments, and data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman models. The findings from this study are that teachers use an assessment strategy based on three assessment approaches according to the 2013 curriculum: assessment as learning, assessment for learning, and assessment of learning. However, in this transitional period, teachers are considered to need to improve in applying technology to assessment. Besides that, the strategies used by teachers also tend to be monotonous. The results of this study are expected to be a reflection for teachers in determining the right strategy in the transition from online to onsite learning.
