Abstract

This study aims to analyse the teacher's perception of online formative assessment of student's speaking skills and to know the teacher's implementation of online formative assessment. This study used a mixed-method research approach. The subjects in this study were three English teachers at Mahasaraswati Denpasar University who implemented online formative assessments. The data was collected through observation, interviews via WhatsApp chat, and close-ended questionnaires. The result showed that the teacher positively perceived online formative assessment regarding peer collaboration of student tests and enhancing test material. The teacher could help the students identify strengths and weaknesses in their speaking skills to improve their speaking performance. However, teachers have faced challenges in assessing online, such as students' ability to assess their attitude optimally, a lack of teacher technology knowledge, and time consumption when assessing numerous students. The study's implication is to provide teachers with an understanding of how to conduct formative speaking assessments in online classrooms without dismissing the character of formative assessment and preparation.

Abstract

This study investigated the different perceptions of female and male students about the characteristics of good and effective EFL teachers—the subjects of this research from 3 classes of Grade 8 students in SMP Negeri 1 Banjar. A total of 97 students were assigned to fill out a self-ranked questionnaire and 20 students (10 male and 10 female) were randomly selected to take part in a Focus Group Discussion. The results revealed there are differences in the perceptions of female and male students about the characteristics of good and effective teachers. For good EFL teachers, male students show a preference for an English teacher who remembers students' names, while female students do not think that remembering students' names is important. Apart from differences in perception between female and male students, both female and male students perceive care about all students as the most important value of good EFL teachers. Similarly, there were some differences between female and male students’ perceptions about effective EFL teachers. Females more than males agreed that effective EFL teachers provide activities that can check student progress. At the same time, males agreed that the use of a language level appropriate to the student's abilities defines the characteristics of an effective EFL teacher.

Abstract

In the 21st century, the evolving educational landscape demands innovative approaches to foster skills beyond mere understanding. Project-based learning, emphasizing authentic experiences and the development of 6C skills, emerges as a fitting model. This study explores the impact and teachers’ perception of project-based learning by utilizing the shape poem technique on vocabulary mastery among fifth-grade students at SD Laboraturium Undiksha Singaraja, a school aspiring to bilingual status.Theoretical frameworks draw on the aesthetic appreciation of poem, emphasizing its visual representation. Insights from various studies underscore the effectiveness of project-based learning in improving academic achievement and attitudes, particularly in language acquisition. The shape poem technique, a subset of concrete poetry, aligns with young learners' preferences for creative and enjoyable approaches. The research methodology employs a mixed-method design involving quantitative assessments and qualitative insights. Teachers' perspectives, as elucidated through questionnaires and interviews, emphasize the positive impact on students' vocabulary mastery. They express confidence in its suitability for young learners, fostering motivation, creativity, and real-world language application. The teachers envision sustained benefits and anticipate continued application in the future, reinforcing the belief that students will experience lasting growth and development through enjoyable, authentic, and meaningful learning. In conclusion, the implementation of project-based learning by utilizing shape poem technique proves to significantly enhance students' vocabulary mastery. Teachers' perceptions affirm its effectiveness and potential for future applications, heralding a positive shift in language education paradigms
