Abstract

This study aims to investigate how male and female view the meaning of a good and effective English teacher. The study was conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Banjar and carried out using a descriptive qualitative research method with open ended questionnaire as an instrument distributed to 83 students. The data were collected through open ended questionnaire by providing 10 statements regarding the characteristics of good English teacher and 10 statements for effective English teachers. Male students consider the teacher-student relationship more important, or more precisely, a relaxed and calm state due to a good relationship between teacher and student in declaring a good English teacher, while female students consider the instructional competencies of teachers more important in declaring a good English teacher. Then regarding the opinions of male and female students about the most important character to declare an effective English teacher, they choose different characters, but both refer to the teacher's pedagogical ability, especially in understanding students' abilities and characteristics, because if they already have good abilities in understanding character and student abilities, the impact will also be very good on student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to determine teaching and learning activities on the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka.  This study uses a mixed approach with descriptive methods.  The population of this study was 7th grade English teachers totaling 2 people and 301 class VII students.  The research sample used was the Probability Sampling Technique, namely simple random sampling with an error rate of 5%, so the number of samples in this study became 172 students and 2 English teachers.  Data collection techniques used in this study were documents, observations, and questionnaires.  Based on the results of the research, it shows that the activities contained in the Kurikulum Merdeka module can accommodate students' competencies and skills.  Therefore, it is very clear that teachers need to create modules for teaching guidelines.  The results shown in the learning activities in the classroom in the teacher module have not been fully implemented by the teacher in the classroom.  The teacher makes activities according to the class atmosphere.  The perception of the teachers is included in the category of positive perceptions because, in the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka, there are activities that can foster students' enthusiasm for comfort while learning in the classroom in Kurikulum Merdeka learning and are shown with very high results seen from the average overall statement of 89%. Meanwhile, from the students side, it has a positive perception of the media that the teacher uses to convey teaching materials and in the learning process makes students think critically.  This is evidenced by the responses of respondents with an average of 77.2%.

Abstract

 This study investigates the effectiveness of the Linguistic Landscape (LL) Technique through Project-Based Learning (PjBL) on seventh-grade students' writing skills at SMP PGRI 2 Denpasar. Industry 4.0's influence on education underscores the need for innovative strategies aligning with the 6C framework. Communication, a vital skill, is often challenging for students, prompting a focus on writing skills as a remedy. Project-Based Learning, particularly when incorporating Linguistic Landscape, emerges as a promising approach. This study employs a mixed-methods approach that utilizes a pre-experimental design involving tests, questionnaires, and interviews for data collection. As a result, the study demonstrates the positive impact of integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Linguistic Landscape (LL) on enhancing the writing skills of seventh-grade students at SMP PGRI 2 Denpasar. The findings emphasize the importance of innovative pedagogical approaches in preparing students for the demands of the evolving educational landscape

Abstract

This study endeavors to delve into the nuanced perceptions of male and female students regarding the attributes of a good and effective English teacher, employing a descriptive qualitative research design. Conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Tabanan, the research engaged three class representatives encompassing a total of 108 students. Through an open-ended questionnaire featuring 10 statements each on the qualities of a good and effective English teacher, a rich dataset emerged from the insights of 85 participants (55 females and 30 males), meticulously collected via a streamlined Google Form. The intriguing findings unveiled a distinctive trend among female students, who showcased a penchant for the emotional facets of teaching, placing a premium on qualities such as empathy, understanding, and sensitivity when conceptualizing an exemplary teacher. In contrast, their male counterparts demonstrated a pragmatic stance, valuing a teacher's keen awareness of their competency level. A unanimous agreement from both genders emerged, highlighting the pivotal role of a flexible and adaptable teaching approach for an English teacher's effectiveness, ensuring adept navigation of unforeseen challenges and the cultivation of a thriving learning environment for all students

Abstract

With the intentional goal of promoting the equality of technology literacy in the world, formative assessment acknowledged as one of alternative assessment in educational system in responses to the demands of new normal EFL teaching and learning process in which conveys potential advantages for an educational system. Formative assessment is interesting to be exposed cause it offers the use of assessment for learning as the guidance to find out as much as the learners do during the learning process. The perception of teachers toward the application of formative assessment is interesting to be exposed cause it offers challenges during the new normal EFL teaching and learning process. This writing attempted at describing summative teachers’ perception on the implementation of formative assessment which promotes differentiated instruction   opportunities   for   helping   students’   movement.   A qualitative approach with case study research design were carried out to seek out the writing’s objective. The preliminary data was attained through observation and the primary data was attained through interviews gathered from the summative teachers’ perception toward formative assessment practices. Results reveals positive perception toward the formative assessment practices during EFL teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Based on the 21st century there are 6 skills of students that need to be developed such as: Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Culture/Citizenship, and Character education/connectivity. To achieve proficiency in a language, it is crucial to develop strong communication skills. For young learners, a good starting point is to focus on memorizing vocabulary, since this will enhance their fluency in speaking. Teaching vocabulary to young learners is challenging, though, as the teacher must utilize an effective teaching method that accommodates the needs of each student. This study focused on the effect of linguistic landscape in project-based learning on students’ vocabulary mastery. This study was conducted at SD Negeri 1 Banjar Jawa, the method used by the researcher was pre-experimental with pre-test and post-test as the instruments to collect the data. The result of this study demonstrated that using the linguistic landscape in project-based learning has a major impact on students' vocabulary mastery. Based on the findings of the pre-and post-tests, students' post-test scores increased significantly after their treatment. Students in class V.B. enthusiastically engaged in the project-based learning process, following its phases and ending in the creation of a linguistic landscape as a final product over the course of six meetings.

Abstract

This study was aimed at analyzing students’ effort for independent learning through voluntary extensive reading in which it was viewed from students’ reading motives and materials. This study was designed in the form of qualitative study by involving 30 junior high school students and the data were gained through observation, interview, and survey. The instruments were the researcher, observation sheet, interview guide, and questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by using qualitative data analysis. The findings revealed that; 1) the English reading materials read by the students are the materials related to the school materials, fiction (story, novel), and news, 2) students have their motives in reading extensively, namely to gain experience and skills in English language, to learn new things, to be confident and to improve ability in using the language. This study suggested that teachers to encourage extensive reading in classroom.

Abstract

This article’s objective was to investigate students’ perception on the use of google classroom in the online and onsite learning mode during the transition period of pandemic education. The research was a descriptive study that uses qualitative methods. The study was conducted at a public school at South-Bali, Indonesia; with the subject of approximately 80 students. The data collection process was done through survey and interview employing questionnaire and interview guide. Instruments were validated through content validation conducted through expert judges. There were five factors that were used to measure the students’ perception on the use of Google Classroom in the online and onsite learning, namely: ease of access, sense of usefulness (perceived usefulness), communication and interaction, presentation of instructional materials (perceived instruction delivery), and satisfaction. The data from were analyzed using several steps proposed, including quantified data analysis and interactive model such as data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Results portrayed that the investigated students had positive perception towards the use of Google Classroom in EFL online learning context and in EFL onsite learning context. Results also portrayed that the score of the students’ perception in onsite learning was higher, or in other word, was more positive than the online learning in the use of Google Classroom. The students positively perceived the use of Google Classroom in the current face-to-face meeting as a platform for sharing and accessing learning materials and organizing assignment.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out how instructors and students felt about using technology in English classes. A mixed method sequential exploratory design was used in the investigation. The subjects were 228 students in the tenth grade at SMA Negeri 1 Gianyar and one English teacher. The interview guide and questionnaire were used to gather respondents' perceptions in order to meet the research goal. A combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed that: (1) English teachers saw the use of technology in language instruction favorably because it had a number of positive effects; and (2) students believed that using technology in the language learning process could improve their knowledge and proficiency in the language. It showed that incorporating technology into the English language learning process has several positive effects on EFL students as well as English teachers.

Abstract

The integration of digital platforms in education has become increasingly prevalent, particularly in response to the need for remote learning solutions. This study aims to explore the structure of teaching and learning activities using Google Classroom in learning English and to find out the impacts of using Google Classroom in Learning English. The subjects of this study were 30 students of science class XI at Senior High School 3 of West Seram, Maluku, Indonesia. This study employed qualitative research. The data was collected through documentation and in-depth interview. The result of this study revealed that teaching and learning activities using Google Classroom run for approximately one semester. The students and teacher utilized Google Classroom to discuss the materials and submit the assignment through the platform’s features. This study also presented the positive and negative impacts of using Google Classroom in Learning English. The positive impacts are increased student participation, ease of assignment submission, the flexibility to learn from anywhere at any time, saving time and energy to learn, and even improvements in reading, writing, and listening skills in English. Conversely, the negative impacts are the students feeling frustrated and restless, tendencies towards procrastination, and instances of plagiarism.
