Abstract

Raw water sources are essential in providing clean water, and their quality must be maintained to meet health standards. The quality of raw water is affected by environmental conditions, rainfall, and human activities along river flows. Domestic, agricultural, and industrial activities often lead to pollution through suspended particles, chemical compounds, and organic materials that increase turbidity and alter the water’s physical and chemical properties. Therefore, effective treatment is needed to ensure water is safe for consumption. This study aims to analyze the physical and chemical parameters in the raw water treatment system at Perumda Tirtanadi Sunggal. The research used a qualitative descriptive method through field observations and secondary data from laboratory tests conducted at the same location. The physical parameters observed were temperature, color, and turbidity, while the chemical parameters included pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, organic substances, and metal contents such as Fe, Mn, and Al. The raw water originated from the middle part of Sei Belawan, an area susceptible to pollution from domestic, agricultural, and industrial waste. Results showed that the turbidity and Fe content of the raw water exceeded raw water testing standards. However, after treatment, all parameters met the Indonesian drinking water quality standards as stated in the Minister of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023 and Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 concerning Environmental Protection and Management. The study emphasizes that continuous improvement of the treatment process is essential to maintain high water quality throughout the distribution system in accordance with hygiene and sanitation standards.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease (NCD) known as a silent killer because it often shows no symptoms but can cause serious complications and even death. In Indonesia, the prevalence of hypertension continues to increase, even exceeding the global average. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of hypertension cases and their characteristics based on gender in the working area of the Tuntungan Community Health Center (UPT Puskesmas Tuntungan) in 2023. The research design used was an ecological study with a spatial analysis approach. Secondary data were obtained from records of hypertension cases based on villages in the working area of the Tuntungan Community Health Center. The analysis was performed descriptively using QGIS and GeoDa software to produce spatial distribution maps and incidence rates (IR). The data were also analyzed based on the characteristics of the patients' gender. The results showed that the total number of hypertension cases in 2023 was 14,452, with a slightly higher proportion of women (51.15%) than men (48.85%). Spatial distribution showed the highest concentration of cases in several villages, such as Salam Tani, Namorih, Tiang Layar, Namo Simpur, and Tengah. The village of Salam Tani recorded the highest percentage of cases at 8.3%. Based on incidence analysis, the villages with the highest IR were Salam Tani, Durin Simbelang, Namo Riam, Durin Tonggal, and Lama, with an IR of 99.2 per 1,000 population. Unhealthy lifestyles, low physical activity, and low socioeconomic status were the main determinants of the high prevalence of hypertension. In addition, there are differences in the distribution of cases based on gender, which indicates the need for an intervention approach that considers gender aspects. These findings indicate that spatial analysis can be an important tool in identifying priority areas for promotional and preventive interventions. Effective hypertension control strategies need to be tailored to the demographic, geographic, and social characteristics of the local community.

Abstract

Cases of environmental pollution in Indonesia are still relatively high and are one of the causes of the increasing number of infectious diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and hepatitis A. One of the factors that influence this condition is the low knowledge and concern of the community towards environmental sanitation, including in educational environments such as Islamic boarding schools. This study aims to determine the effect of santri's knowledge of environmental sanitation and their caring attitude towards environmental hygiene at the Daarul Istiqlal Islamic Boarding School in Medan, Patumbak District. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population in this study were all ninth grade students as many as 128 people, with a sample of 70 students taken through random sampling techniques using the Slovin formula. The instruments used consisted of a knowledge test and an attitude questionnaire with a Likert scale. The results showed that the students' knowledge was in the excellent category with an average score of 86.64, while their caring attitude was in the good category with an average score of 75.87. Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis showed a positive and significant relationship between knowledge and students' caring attitude towards environmental cleanliness with a correlation value of 0.497 and a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). This shows that the higher the knowledge of the students, the higher their caring attitude towards environmental cleanliness.

Abstract

Landslides are natural events involving the movement of soil and/or rock material from its original position to a lower part of the slope due to a decrease in the slope's bearing capacity. They are influenced by high rainfall intensity, slope conditions, soil characteristics, and changes in physical environmental conditions due to human activity. Disaster education in schools plays an important role in shaping knowledge and attitudes of preparedness for landslides. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of landslide disaster education on the knowledge and attitudes of students at SMP Negeri 31 Medan Tuntungan. This study used a quantitative method with a One-Group Pre-test Post-test design on 33 ninth-grade students. The Chi-Square test results showed a significant difference in the proportion of categories, where the number of students with “Good” knowledge increased from 54.5% to 84.8% (p=0.039), and “Good” attitudes increased from 42.4% to 75.8% (p=0.007). However, analysis using the Paired Sample t-test showed that individually, there was no significant increase in the average knowledge score (from 47.96 to 49.44; p=0.303) and no significant change in the average attitude score (from 55.26 to 54.07; p=0.268). Not statistically significant. The absence of a significant effect on these absolute scores is thought to be due to a ceiling effect, whereby students' basic understanding was already quite high from the outset, and a one-way educational method that was unable to profoundly change the affective domain in a short period of time. A more participatory, routine educational program involving hands-on practice is needed to strengthen students' disaster preparedness.

Abstract

Flies are one of the mechanical vectors of disease commonly found in market environments. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and lighting are suspected to influence the density of flies. This study aims to determine the relationship between temperature, humidity, and lighting with fly density at Pancur Batu Market, Pancur Batu District, This study involved a sample of 85 stalls selected through purposive sampling from five types of vendor areas (chicken, fish, meat, vegetables, and fruit). Fly density was measured using Pagoda fly paper traps, while temperature, humidity, and lighting were measured using a thermohygrometer and a luxmeter. Data analysis was conducted using the chi-square test in SPSS software, The results showed that most locations 69 stalls (81.2%) had high fly density. Temperature did not meet the standard at 73 stalls (85.9%), humidity met the standard at 31 stalls (36.5%), and lighting met the standard at 61 stalls (71.8%). Only humidity was significantly associated with fly density (p = 0.012), whereas temperature (p = 0.848) and lighting (p = 1.000) showed no significant relationship with fly density at Pancur Batu Market. Humidity is the most influential environmental factor affecting fly density at Pancur Batu Market. Therefore, managing humidity and improving market cleanliness should be prioritized to reduce the fly population and the risk of disease transmission.
