Abstract

The governance of majelis taklim (Islamic study groups) is still diverse and unstandardized, resulting in differences in community participation and management effectiveness, which in turn affect the quality of Nonformal Islamic education. This study examines the governance of Nonformal Islamic educational institutions, specifically majelis taklim, through a qualitative multisite approach in eighteen majelis taklim in Mandailing Natal Regency. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results revealed two distinct governance models: open and closed. Open governance is typically found in majelis taklim established and managed by the community, characterized by high participation in decision-making and management. In contrast, closed governance is observed in majelis taklim managed by religious scholars, where decisions are centralized. The type of governance structure influences community participation levels, open governance shows higher involvement, while closed governance is more limited. These findings indicate that governance structures play a crucial role in determining community engagement and influencing Nonformal Islamic education practices. This study implies the importance of adaptive and participatory governance guidelines to enhance the effectiveness of Islamic study group management and strengthen the role of communities in Islamic education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the revitalization efforts of local wisdom values embedded in the Pataru Indahan tradition, a traditional seven-month pregnancy ceremony practiced by the community of Hajoran Village, Sungai Kanan Subdistrict, South Labuhanbatu Regency. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation to obtain a comprehensive and contextual understanding of the tradition's implementation and transformation. The findings indicate that revitalizing the Pataru Indahan tradition requires synergy among traditional leaders, village authorities, educational institutions, and active community involvement, particularly from younger generations. Identified revitalization strategies include integrating the tradition into non-formal education, strengthening the local cultural narrative, and embedding traditional values into social and communal activities. This study offers a contextual and participatory approach to revitalization, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement and the reinforcement of cultural values within the framework of modern social life. The findings provide a strategic foundation for local stakeholders to design culturally adaptive preservation programs that respond to social change while remaining relevant to contemporary community life. This study contributes to the literature on cultural anthropology and local tradition preservation by presenting a participatory-based revitalization model that can be applied to other cultural traditions facing existential decline due to modernization.

Abstract

This study analyses the MATAULI Foundation's role in enhancing educational access and quality in Tapanuli Tengah Regency, a region characterised by geographical and socio-economic constraints. Educational inequities in marginalised regions of Indonesia persist as a significant concern, requiring the involvement of community-based institutions to address them. This study aims to assess the role and contributions of the MATAULI Foundation, namely via MATAULI High School, which emphasises diversity, character education, and academic success. The study utilises a qualitative methodology using a case study framework, incorporating in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that SMA MATAULI employs a clear meritocratic selection procedure, offers scholarships and dormitory accommodations for disadvantaged students, and provides high-quality education complemented with character development initiatives. Students from diverse coastal and rural regions have attained national acclaim, and alumni have gained admission to esteemed universities both nationally and globally. The amalgamation of ethical principles with educational benchmarks yields graduates who are anchored in local culture while remaining globally competitive. In summary, community-based educational institutions, when administered with openness and a definitive goal, can mitigate educational inequalities and enhance social mobility. The MATAULI approach can be duplicated in other locations encountering analogous obstacles, thus exemplifying the transformative potential of locally based education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research examines various moral problems among teenagers in Ujung Kubu Village, Nibung Hangus Sub-district, Batu Bara Regency. This research aims to identify and analyze the factors that influence adolescents' moral behavior and the efforts made by fishermen's families to overcome these problems. A qualitative approach with a case study was used as the primary method. Data collection techniques included passive participatory observation, in-depth interviews with key informants, and document study. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive analysis techniques, narrative compilation, and verification through triangulation and member checks to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the findings. The research findings show that behavior against parents, abusive speech, fighting among friends, and often leaving the house in the middle of the night are serious moral problems among adolescents in this village. Factors influencing these problems include the role of parents, the influence of the peer environment, and the lack of consistent religious education. Parents face challenges in implementing moral education amid negative environmental influences. Family efforts include open communication, setting clear rules, and limiting the peer environment, although there are limitations in fully controlling children's behavior. This study reinforces previous theories about the importance of family and environment in adolescent moral formation and provides new insights into the complexity of moral issues in fishing communities. A more adaptive and responsive approach is needed to create an environment conducive to healthy and responsible adolescent development.
