Abstract

One of the most potent sources of air pollution is from the industrial sector. The air pollutants produced from the industry are TSP dust. Long exposure for a long time can pose a risk in the form of impaired pulmonary function capacity. The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between years of work, dust levels with impaired lung capacity in the environment of hot mix asphalt production officers in the Public Works Office of Medan City. This type of research is observational analytic with a cross-sectional design. A sample of 45 workers in the hot mix asphalt production section in the AMP area of the Medan City Public Works Service. The results of the study found that the dust levels in AMP were still below the NAB, ranging from 2-8.10 mg / m3, workers who had pulmonary function disorders were 15 people (34%). The results of the analysis using the Pearson correlation test showed that there was a moderate relationship between dust exposure and lung function capacity with a value of r = -0.432, p = 0.003, and there was a weak relationship between the work period and the function of pulmonary function with a value of r = -0.384, p = 0.009 . Therefore, it is recommended to the Public Works Office of Medan City to provide respirators for workers to prevent the excessive entry of dust into the body.

Abstract

Pesticides are toxic substances which have some negative impact on human health problems. Cholinesterase enzymes play a role in keeping the muscles, glands and nervous system working harmoniously. The high and low activity of cholinesterase enzyme is an indicator of the level of poisoning in the human body and can be used as an indication of the presence of pesticides in the blood. The purpose of this study was to analyse the relationship of pesticide exposure with cholinesterase levels in the blood of pesticide spraying workers at PT. Langkat Nusantara Kepong Gohor Lama. The research method used is Cross-Sectional at PT. Langkat Nusantara Kepong Gohor Lama with a total sample of 65 workers was obtained by Simple Random Sampling. Information was obtained through interviews with questionnaire aids and cholinesterase examination using a tintometer kit. Based on the results of the analysis using chi-square obtained exposure to pesticides associated with cholinesterase levels in the blood of pesticide sprayers. The result of this study shows that the level of cholinesterase is significantly related to the length of service (p = 0.004) and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (p = 0.002). Suggestions for workers to be more obedient in using PPE in the workplace to minimize exposure to pesticides that enter the body, for companies to pay more attention to the feasibility of PPE that is replacing damaged PPE, make rules or sanctions if workers are negligent and do not use PPE that has been provided and workers with abnormal levels of cholinesterase should be moved temporarily to a minimum of chemical work and companies are advised to use environmentally friendly pesticides so as not to endanger workers, animals and non-targeted insects.

Abstract

Workers who are exposed to evaporated organic compound from printing in the long term will have the risk for subjective symptom of central nervous system disorder in which it is the main entrance to the body through inhalation process. Workers in the production unit will have the most dominant risk for it. The objective of the research was to analyze the influence of using respirator on subjective symptom of central nervous system disorder in worker who work at digital printing industry. The research used one group pretest-posttest design. The samples were workers, taken by using purposive sampling technique. Bivariate analysis used paired t-test at the significance level of 95% (α=0.05). The result of the research showed that p-value = 0.0001 (p<0.05) which indicated that there was significant difference in the scores of Q16 questionnaires between pre and post intervention. The result of Q16 questionnaire in Swedish version showed that 20 respondents (100%) had difficulty breathing and 20 respondents (100%) had headache at least once a week. In the post-intervention with using respirators in one month, there was no complaint anymore. Respirator is equipped with organic vapor cartridge which is able to absorb gas from contaminated air before it enters the workers’ respiratory system. Using respirator as a personal protective device influences the decrease in subjective symptom of central nervous system disorder in printing workers. Using filter, cartridge, or tube in respirator should be done accurately otherwise it will cause danger for the workers.
