Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 15 Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. The subject of this research was class XI IPS 1 which consisted of 32 students. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test. The findings of the research are as following: finding the main idea (75.00), finding the factual information in complication (65.63), finding the factual information in resolution (70.63), finding the meaning of vocabulary (67.50), finding references (71.88), finding inference (51.25), finding social function (73.13). As a conclusion, the highest score was in finding the main ideas (75.00) which categorized into good level, and the lowest score was in finding inference (51.25) which categorized into mediocre level. The implication of the finding is that the second year students of SMAN 15 Pekanbaru should improve their reading skills in order to reach excellent level.Keywords: Reading Ability, Comprehending Narrative Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research investigates the ability of the fourth semester students of English department study program FKIP universitas Riau Pekanbaru in using past expression (complex sentences). The population of this research was the fourth semester students of English department study program FKIP universitas Riau Pekanbaru in academic year of 2018/2019. There were 30 students who participate as the sample of this research. The students are tested using a simple test. The result of the test given was then classified into certain categories. The test results of 30 students shows that 6 students (20%) are in good to excellent category, 8 students (26,67%) are in good to excellent level, 8 students (26,67%) at average to good level, 8 students (26,67%) in poor to average level, and last 8 student (26,67%) in poor level. In addition, the average score of the students in past expression (complex sentences) is 61,16. It means that the students’ ability in past expression(complex sentences) was in the average to good level. Based on the tests, it can be concluded that the fourth semester students of English department study program FKIP universitas Riau Pekanbaru already were in average to good ability in past expression(complex sentence). Researcher recommended the students and other researchers to conduct similar research to get further information.Key Words: Ability, Past Expression, and Complex Sentences

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out speaking difficulties faced by the third year students of English Department FKIP Universitas Riau. This research is descriptive research that has one variable. The numbers of sample are 30 students chosen by using proportional sampling techniques. To find the difficulties in speaking of the students, there was a questionnaire used for collecting the data. The questionnaire was adapted from Verapornvanichkul (2011). The questionnaire consists of two aspects; linguistics problems (vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation), and psychological problems (fear of making mistakes, anxiety, shyness, lack of confidence and lack of motivation). The questionnaire was accessed by the students online via Google forms. The questionnaire of this research was presented using 5 point Likert-scale start from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The result showed that every student encounter each difficulties of speaking according to the aspect of linguistics and psychological. The mostly difficulties in speaking faced by the student in linguistic aspects is vocabulary (76.6%) and anxiety as the psychological aspect (82%).Key Words: Analysis, Speaking, Speaking Difficulties

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research designed to discover the ability of the third semester students of the English study program FKIP Universitas Riau in writing a paragraph. The population of this research was the third semester students of English study program FKIP Universitas Riau and consisted of 121 students. The sample was 38 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique and lottery technique in selecting the class. The instrument of the research was writing test in paragraph form. The students wrote a paragraph based on the topics provided by the researcher. The students’ achievement in writing paragraph was analyzed especially their ability in five major writing aspects; grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, fluency, and organization. From data analysis, the average score is 65,70. The researcher found that the students’ writing ability can be categorized as good in level which vocabulary is reaching the highest score (67,67) while grammar being the lowest score (63.33). The finding implied that the third semester students of English study program FKIP Universitas Riau should improve their writing ability.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Writing, Paragraph

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out what is the learning ability of the second-year students of SMAN 1 Pekanbaru in reading comprehension about descriptive texts, narrative texts, and recount texts. This is descriptive research. The numbers of sample are 72 students chosen by using cluster random sampling. Reading comprehension test were used to collect the data. The data were collected through 42 multiple choice reading test to measure students’ ability in comprehending descriptive, narrative, and recount texts. There were 8 components of reading that used: Factual Information (FI); Main Idea (MI); Guessing Vocabulary (V); Reference (R); Inference (I); Social Functions (SF); Generic Structure (GS); and Language Features (LF). The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 26.0 and Microsoft Excel 2019. The result shows that the average score is 75.19 with 97.6 as the highest score and 30.9 as the lowest score. Thus, result indicates that the students’ comprehension is at good level.Key Words: Ability, Reading, Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aims to find out the levels of students’ speaking and the dominant type of anxiety that occured in speaking performance of the Third Semester Students of English Study Program Fkip Universitas Riau. The research design of the research was quantitative descriptive research and the population of the research was third semester students of English study program fkip Universitas Riau. Thus, 30 participants selected from the third semester students of English Study Program Universitas Riau by using a proportional sampling technique. The data were collected through questionnaire. The questionnaire was adapted from FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) designed by Horwitz et al (1986). The result of the questionnaire shows that the students’ speaking anxiety is overall in the anxious level. There were six students (20%) in the level of very anxious, thirteen students (43.3%) in the level of anxious, nine students (30%) in the mildly level, one student (3%) in the relaxed level, and also one student (3%) in the level very relaxed. The result from grouping based on FLCAS type found that “test anxiety” was the main factor that causes students to feel anxious about 18 (60%) students, followed by the “communication apprehension” factor became the second factor with 16 (53%) students, then the last factor was “fear of negative evaluation” with 16 (53%) students. It concludes that the highest anxiety scale that occurs in “anxious” caused by test anxiety.Key Words: Analysis, Speaking, Anxiety In Speaking Performance.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to identify both types of grammatical errors and dominant errors made by the second grade students of SMAN 6 Kundur Kabupaten Karimun Kepulauan Riau in writing recount texts. The population as well as the sample (Total Sampling) of this research was the second grade students of SMAN 6 Kundur Kabupaten Karimun Kepulauan Riau. The research findings revealed that all types of grammatical errors and error of formation was the most dominant with 195 errors (54.92%); then, followed by error of omission with 93 errors (26.20%), and error of addition and ordering were below 10%. Error of addition with 34 errors (9.60%) and error of ordering with 33 errors (9.30%). Therefore, it can be concluded that the second grade students of SMAN 6 Kundur Kabupaten Karimun Kepulauan Riau committed the errors because of the influence of their mother tongue, the way of thinking, and generalization of the rule of the target language.Keywords: Error Analysis, Omission, Addition, Formation, ordering.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of Classroom-BasedAssessment (CBA) among teachers of State Junior High Schools in Riau Province,Indonesia. The sample consisted of 297 English teachers. This study used the CIPPEvaluation Model focusing on the evaluation of these aspects: input, process and product.Questionnaires were administered in the collection of data for the aspects of input andprocess; while a checklist was used for the aspect of product. Findings for input showedthat the training and attitudes towards CBA is at a high level; while the aspects ofimplementation of knowledge and skills in CBA is at a moderate level. In the aspect ofprocess, it was found that the frequency of implementation of the types of CBA ismoderate; while the aspects of CBA in inviting experts and identifying honesty in a largegroup of students were a major constraint faced by teachers in implementing CBA. In theaspect of product, it was found that the majority of teachers tend to use the same rubrics asare found in the curriculum. The results showed that there was no significant difference inthe level of knowledge, attitudes and skills of teachers to conduct CBA based on theirschool location and school teaching experience. Overall, the sub-aspects of knowledge,attitudes and skills contribute 41.2 percent of the variable performance-based assessmentgrades, while 58.8 percent were attributed to other factors that are not taken into account inthis study. The implication of this study is that in order to implement CBA as adeterminant of approval, the proposed school needs to implement a planned and systematicongoing training, whether working with various parties, inviting experts in the CBAseminar in schools or sending teachers to attend seminars, courses and workshops in CBA.This study has implications for the existing evaluation system in Indonesian schoolsbecause the majority of experts and teachers tend to conclude CBA as a morecomprehensive evaluation system.Keywords: Classroom-based assessment, portfolio, input, process, and product

Abstract

Abstract: This is a descriptive research with one try out and real-test design. It aimed to find out the ability of the third year students of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru. The population of this research was all of the third year students at SMPN 14Pekanbaru which consists of 262 students.  Cluster random sampling technique was used to select one class to be the sample. As a result, class IX.1 and IX.2 with 60 students was chosen as the sample. The instrument used was a reading test that consists of 20 questions in the form of multiple choice tests. The results of data showed that mean score in real test was in good level(70.83). Then, according to the results of the data in terms of reading component, the mean score of finding main ideas was 77.92, the mean score of identifying inference was 54.17, the mean score of  finding the meaning of the vocabulary was 91.2, the mean score of finding factual information was 77.8, the mean score of identifying inference was 52.5.

Abstract

Abstract: This reserach aimed at finding out the most common problems in writing experienced by the third year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. This research is a descriptive quantitative with survey and the population of the survey is 110 third year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. A questionnaire was used to collect the data to find out most common problems in writing of the students. The questionnaire contained 21 statements and divided into 2 groups: internal problems (Organization, Spelling, Grammar and Capitalization) and external problems (Learners’motivation, teachers feedback and inadequate time) with 9 items. The questionnaire was accessed online via google forms. Every statement in questionnaire used 5 point Likert-Scale start from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The result showed the most problem in writing experienced in internal problem is spelling problem with 229.3 average points. The other problems are: organization problem with 217.3 average points, grammar problem with 213.6 average points and the last is capitalization 195 average points . The most problems in external problem is inadequate time with 246 average points. The other problems learners’ motivation with 243.3 average points and teachers’ feedback with 218 average points.Key Words: Survey, Writing, Writing problems.
