Abstract

This research examines university students’ perceptions of TikTok as a medium for learning English pronunciation. The research was conducted due to the increasing use of social media platforms in language learning and the limited studies focusing on students’ perceptions of TikTok specifically for pronunciation practice. A quantitative research design was employed, and data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire adapted based on previous research and developed based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which includes Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PE), and Attitude Toward Using (ATU). The participants were 66 fourth-semester students of the English Department at Universitas Riau who actively use TikTok. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, particularly mean score calculation. The findings reveal that students’ perceptions across all three TAM indicators fall within the High category. The results indicate that students perceive TikTok as useful in supporting pronunciation learning through its short videos, clear audio input, visual demonstrations, and interactive features. TikTok is also perceived as easy to use and accessible content, which allows students to practice pronunciation efficiently. In addition, students demonstrate positive attitudes toward using TikTok, showing motivation, enjoyment, and willingness to incorporate the platform into their pronunciation learning activities. Overall, the findings suggest that TikTok is perceived as a beneficial, user-friendly, and well-accepted supplementary medium for learning English pronunciation in higher education contexts.

Abstract

This study investigated students’ perceptions of difficulties in the listening section of the TOEFL among English Education students of FKIP Universitas Riau. The study aimed to identify which listening indicators were perceived as the most difficult by students. A descriptive quantitative method supported by interviews was employed. The participants consisted of 177 English Education students selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from Phillips’ (2001) TOEFL listening indicators and semi-structured interviews to support the quantitative findings. The results revealed that several listening indicators were perceived as highly difficult by the students. Indicators categorized as high difficulty included identifying speakers’ implied meanings, understanding idiomatic expressions, recognizing almost negative expressions, and distinguishing similar sounds. These findings indicate that students experienced significant challenges in comprehending implicit information and specific linguistic features in TOEFL listening tasks. The study suggests that greater instructional emphasis should be placed on these listening indicators to improve students’ listening comprehension skills.

Abstract

Specifically, the study focuses on three main objectives: to analyze the significant and positive effect of transformational leadership of school principals on teacher performance, to analyze the significant effect of understanding educational report cards on teacher performance, and to analyze the simultaneous effect of transformational leadership of school principals and understanding educational report cards on teacher performance. The study employed a mixed methods approach to obtain both quantitative data and in-depth narratives regarding the experiences of teachers and principals in enhancing teacher performance. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 42 teachers, covering the variables of transformational leadership (X1), understanding of educational report cards (X2), and teacher performance (Y). Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and regression analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of teacher performance scores, including mean, mode, median, highest, and lowest scores. The results indicated that transformational leadership of school principals had a positive and significant effect on teacher performance with a regression coefficient of 0.312, meaning that each one-unit increase in transformational leadership increases teacher performance by 0.312 units. Descriptive analysis showed that all indicators of transformational leadership were in the very high category, except for one indicator in the high category, with a total mean score of 4.83 (96.5%), reflecting a strong positive influence on teacher performance.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence has introduced new digital tools that support learning activities, including in the field of language education. One of the most widely used AI tools is ChatGPT, which provides interactive assistance for various academic tasks. This study aims to investigate the usage patterns of ChatGPT as a tool to support reading comprehension among students of the English Study Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Riau. The research employed a quantitative survey design to explore how students utilize ChatGPT in their reading activities. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to students to identify the frequency of use, purposes of use, and students’ perceptions regarding the effectiveness of ChatGPT in assisting reading comprehension. The findings indicate that many students frequently use ChatGPT to help them understand unfamiliar vocabulary, summarize texts, identify main ideas, and clarify complex sentences in English reading materials. In addition, students reported that ChatGPT helps them process information more efficiently and improves their overall understanding of academic texts. The results also reveal that students perceive ChatGPT as a practical and accessible learning support tool that enhances independent learning. However, the study also highlights the importance of using AI tools responsibly to avoid overreliance on technology in the learning process. Overall, this study suggests that ChatGPT can serve as a supportive digital resource for improving students’ reading comprehension skills in higher education contexts.
