Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of digital flashcards in improving the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students of SMP Taruna Sakti Pekanbaru as measured through a vocabulary test. The study applied a pre-experimental design involving one group without a control group, in which measurements were conducted before and after the treatment. The data were obtained from a vocabulary test consisting of 30 multiple-choice items given as a Pre-Test and Post-Test. The mean score of the Pre-Test was 64, while the Post-Test mean increased to 86.23, indicating a notable improvement in students’ vocabulary achievement. The results were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, which produced an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000. This indicates that the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) is accepted. Consequently, it can be concluded that the use of digital flashcards has a positive and significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using digital mind mapping on students' reading comprehension ability in recount texts. This study uses a pre-experimental method with one group pre-test post-test. The research sample consisted of eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Rambah Samo in the 2025/2026 academic year. The research instrument was a multiple-choice test consisting of 32 questions that had been tested for validity and reliability (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.974). The data were analyzed using normality tests, paired sample t-tests, and N-Gain. The results showed an increase in students' reading comprehension skills after using digital mind maps. The average pre-test score was 58.93, while the post-test score was 67.36. The Sig. value (two tails) was 0.000 < 0.05, so Ha was accepted. Thus, digital mind maps have a significant effect on students' reading comprehension ability.

Abstract

This research examines university students’ perceptions of TikTok as a medium for learning English pronunciation. The research was conducted due to the increasing use of social media platforms in language learning and the limited studies focusing on students’ perceptions of TikTok specifically for pronunciation practice. A quantitative research design was employed, and data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire adapted based on previous research and developed based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which includes Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PE), and Attitude Toward Using (ATU). The participants were 66 fourth-semester students of the English Department at Universitas Riau who actively use TikTok. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, particularly mean score calculation. The findings reveal that students’ perceptions across all three TAM indicators fall within the High category. The results indicate that students perceive TikTok as useful in supporting pronunciation learning through its short videos, clear audio input, visual demonstrations, and interactive features. TikTok is also perceived as easy to use and accessible content, which allows students to practice pronunciation efficiently. In addition, students demonstrate positive attitudes toward using TikTok, showing motivation, enjoyment, and willingness to incorporate the platform into their pronunciation learning activities. Overall, the findings suggest that TikTok is perceived as a beneficial, user-friendly, and well-accepted supplementary medium for learning English pronunciation in higher education contexts.

Abstract

This study investigated students’ perceptions of difficulties in the listening section of the TOEFL among English Education students of FKIP Universitas Riau. The study aimed to identify which listening indicators were perceived as the most difficult by students. A descriptive quantitative method supported by interviews was employed. The participants consisted of 177 English Education students selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from Phillips’ (2001) TOEFL listening indicators and semi-structured interviews to support the quantitative findings. The results revealed that several listening indicators were perceived as highly difficult by the students. Indicators categorized as high difficulty included identifying speakers’ implied meanings, understanding idiomatic expressions, recognizing almost negative expressions, and distinguishing similar sounds. These findings indicate that students experienced significant challenges in comprehending implicit information and specific linguistic features in TOEFL listening tasks. The study suggests that greater instructional emphasis should be placed on these listening indicators to improve students’ listening comprehension skills.
