Abstract

Indonesia in multicultural education has not yet shown significant results within the framework of multicultural education, even though Islamic education in Islamic boarding schools has unconsciously implemented it first. This study aims to describe, analyze and interpret how to revive multicultural Islamic education in Indonesia. This type of research is qualitative with literature review method. The main objects in this research are books, journals, articles, and other scientific literature related to the research topic. Social theory and multicultural theories are also searched by researchers and collected as complementary data. After the data is collected, it is reviewed and analyzed using the interactive model theory of Huberman and Saldana (2014). From the results of the analysis it was found that: 1) Multicultural Islamic Education is a paradigm of the social life of the world community which is united in the celestial ontology (Al-Qur'an and Al-Hadith along with the principles of the imams); 2). The ideas and mission of Ibn Khaldun's education which are oriented towards the friendliness of the world's values and the values of the hereafter, deserve to be used as a reference and reference for the implementation of Multicultural Islamic Education; 3). Islam, with its slogan that originates from heaven, as rohmatan lil'almin, implies that there is no element of distinction between all earthly creatures with all their labels (religion, culture, customs, ethnicity, language, class) and other diversity. 4). The symbol of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which is in line with the concept of heaven, should not only be used as a motto, but must be instilled into the foundations of community education life. 5). Textbooks of Islamic Education that are friendly, tolerant, uphold mutual understanding and respect need to be printed and campaigned on a large scale. 6). There is a need to integrate various histories into historical subject units, because history is an original and liner fact. It is with history that we know the conditions of the beginning, the golden age, the destruction and the rise of the former nations with all their behavior, morals and ethics. The results of this study are expected to be used as information and references for other researchers with literature studies on Multicultural Islamic Education.

Abstract

Multicultural education is a blessing in disguise for Indonesian pluralism because it promotes diversity and harmony in embroidery. The realization of human and democratic values in it leads to continuity in spreading social piety, universal wisdom, and civilized life. The purpose of this research is to see Aziumardi Azra's thoughts about multicultural education so that the clouds and cloudy skies of education can be opened. At the same time, this paper is dedicated to the extended family of Azyumardi Azra as a teacher of an intellectual multicultural nation. This research is a qualitative research, library research using a philosophical histories approach. The results of the study show that: 1) Azyumardi Azra views multicultural education as an awareness of the recognition and acceptance of diversity as a sunnatullah which should be a pillar of unity. He is so firm in his optimistic foundation to fight for equality, social justice, democracy, tolerance, inclusivity, equality, pluralism, and rule of law for Indonesian people; 2) The application of multicultural education to the history of the Indonesian nation needs to be raised again which was broken by monoculturalism; 3) Multicultural education is the main tool as a media meeting point for a multicultural world nation to prevent social chaos and escapism. 4) Indonesia with all its diversity is a good country because many of its meeting points are based on four foundations, namely Pancasila, NKRI, Unity in Diversity, and the 1945 Constitution. This research is optimistic to simplify the interaction or influence of multicultural values, Indonesian values, and Islamic values on forms of acceptance in Indonesian education

Abstract

The persistence of intolerance in society underscores the critical role of education in shaping tolerant attitudes, particularly within faith-based educational settings. This study aimed to analyze the constructivist approach in inclusive education and its implications for the formation of tolerant attitudes among students at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. A qualitative approach with an ethnographic design was employed, with data collected over the course of one year through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document study. Data were analyzed interactively through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that inclusive education at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor is implemented through the shared life of students from diverse cultural, regional, and character backgrounds within a unified schooling and boarding system. The constructivist approach is manifested in learning and student development processes that position students as active subjects in constructing their understanding and tolerant attitudes through direct experience, social interaction, collaborative work, and reflection. Tolerance education is carried out through two models, namely direct tolerance and indirect tolerance, which operate integratively within the framework of inclusive education, thereby making tolerance not merely a norm but a consciously internalized character within the students. The study concludes that a constructivist approach within inclusive education is effective in fostering students’ tolerant attitudes in an active, reflective, and sustainable manner, and affirms that Islamic boarding schools hold strategic potential as character education spaces capable of preparing students to live harmoniously in a plural society. Abstract

Abstract This study examines how multicultural Islamic education contributes to the development of inclusive adaptive behavior and active religious engagement among inmates at a Class I Correctional Institution in Surabaya. Prisons represent complex multicultural environments marked by diverse religious, cultural, and social backgrounds that often generate tension and exclusion. Positioned within the discourse of multicultural education and rehabilitative correctional practices, this research adopts a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore inmates’ lived experiences. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant and non-participant observations, and analysis of institutional religious and social programs, and were analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that inclusive behavior is fostered through role modeling by religious leaders, correctional officers, and senior inmates, as well as through routine religious, social, and vocational activities that emphasize empathy, tolerance, cooperation, and social responsibility. Moreover, inmates’ re-engagement in religious roles such as mentoring peers, leading prayers, teaching Qur’an, and delivering sermons strengthens leadership, moral awareness, and social solidarity. These processes facilitate spiritual growth and enhance inmates’ readiness for social reintegration. The study demonstrates that integrating Islamic multicultural values into correctional education can serve as an effective strategy for inclusive rehabilitation in multicultural institutional settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how curriculum is managed and enacted in a traditional pesantren and how these practices function as mechanisms for regulating knowledge, power relations, and the formation of santri character. The study employs a qualitative, ethnographic research design, with data collected through long-term participant observation, in-depth interviews with kiai, ustadz, santri, and pesantren administrators, and the analysis of relevant supporting documents. The findings reveal that the curriculum at PPMH Sidayu is not structured through formal written plans or organizational frameworks. Instead, it operates through informal, everyday learning practices such as pengajian kitab, the bandongan and sorogan methods, oral evaluations, and institutionalized forms of social habituation. The selection and distribution of learning materials, evaluation mechanisms, and managerial coordination occur informally and are accepted as part of the taken-for-granted institutional order. These practices not only transmit religious knowledge but also shape learning dispositions, acceptance of authority, and the social character of santri through affective experiences and social relations. The novel contribution of this study lies in its exploration of the pesantren curriculum as a social practice that operates through symbolic power relations and habituation rather than formal pedagogical structures. This research provides a deeper understanding of curriculum management in traditional Islamic educational institutions, suggesting that it should be seen as a flexible, socially embedded process, influenced more by symbolic authority and informal coordination than formal administrative systems. These findings have significant implications for curriculum studies and Islamic educational management within traditional religious institutions.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of strategic management in enhancing the organizational resilience of Pesantren Miftahul Qulub, an Islamic boarding school operating in a socially and religiously plural environment. Using a qualitative, ethnographic approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The research reveals that the pesantren’s resilience is not solely rooted in religious tradition or charismatic leadership but is significantly influenced by strategic management practices. These include continuous internal and external environmental analysis, the institutionalization of multicultural Islamic values, and adaptive decision-making that fosters social capital and internal cohesion. Leadership at the pesantren continuously adapts its strategic orientation to the social dynamics of its plural environment, focusing on values like openness, equality, humanism, and local wisdom. By embedding these values into daily governance and operations, the pesantren can sustain public legitimacy, strengthen relationships with diverse stakeholders, and navigate the challenges of social and religious diversity. The novelty of this research lies in its integrated model that links strategic management, multicultural Islamic commitments, and organizational resilience in plural societies. Unlike previous studies that treat these concepts in isolation, this study demonstrates their co-evolution within pesantren governance. The findings highlight the importance of three interconnected governance practices: systematic environmental scanning, institutionalization of multicultural values, and resilience-building through routines that maintain legitimacy and cohesion. This framework not only provides practical guidance for pesantren leaders but also contributes to comparative research on religious organizations in diverse settings, emphasizing the transferability of these findings to other contexts.

Abstract

Multicultural contexts pose persistent challenges to sustaining social harmony and peace, particularly within religiously and culturally diverse societies. While prior studies on Islamic education have largely emphasized theological and pedagogical dimensions, limited attention has been given to how institutional practices of multicultural Islamic education function as a transformative mechanism for character formation. This study investigates the enactment of five core values comprising taaruf, tawassuth, tasamuh, taawun, and tawazun within a non-formal adult training institution. The novelty of this research lies in its articulation of how management functions, namely Planning, Organizing, Actuating, and Controlling, are reconceptualized into experiential practices and neurospiritual mechanisms involving brainwave deceleration. Data were generated through sustained observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings demonstrate that a conscious character emerges through a structured process where values are embedded in institutional routines and sustained through a collective habituation ecosystem, including digital social networks and ethical commerce. The study contributes to the field by articulating how multicultural Islamic education operates as an experiential institutional practice that links value-based habituation with peace-oriented character transformation in non-formal settings. These findings suggest that institutional practices, rather than abstract normative frameworks, play a decisive role in connecting Islamic educational values with peacebuilding outcomes.
