Abstract

This study aims to examine Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani’s concept of moral education and its influence on shaping students’ noble character at SMK Yanisba Pontang, Indonesia. The research employs a qualitative approach based on library study, supplemented by field data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using content analysis, focusing on the integration of Sheikh Nawawi’s principles into school practices. Findings indicate that moral education is implemented through routine programs, such as congregational prayers, recitation of moral texts, and discipline reinforcement via school regulations. Teacher role-modeling and behavioral habituation proved effective in cultivating moral awareness and producing tangible changes in student attitudes, including discipline, responsibility, politeness, and mutual respect. Theoretically, this study reinforces Sheikh Nawawi’s principles, particularly uswah hasanah (teachers as role models) and tadrib al-nafs (training oneself through habituation). The results emphasize that moral internalization requires practical engagement and consistent repetition of virtuous behavior. Practically, this model can be applied in vocational schools to develop students with strong moral and spiritual character, preparing them to face social and professional challenges effectively.

Abstract

This article examines how the natoni ritual, an indigenous oral tradition of the Timorese people, is internalized within Islamic religious practices as a form of negotiation between faith and local tradition. Using a qualitative approach through ethnographic methods and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, religious figures, and members of the Muslim community in Timor, this study explores the dynamics underlying this cultural-religious integration. The findings suggest that the incorporation of natoni into Islamic religious celebrations, such as welcoming guests during the Prophet Muhammad's birthday (Mawlid al-Nabi) and other communal religious events, serves as a symbolic mechanism for affirming local identity without compromising Islamic theological principles. Rather than merely serving as a cultural expression, natoni operates as a dialogical space that strengthens social cohesion and harmony between communities in Timor's multicultural society. This study further demonstrates the crucial role of traditional and religious leaders in reinterpreting natoni in a way that aligns with Islamic values while preserving its legitimacy as a shared cultural heritage. These findings challenge the monolithic and ahistorical view of Islam in Indonesia, which portrays it as a homogeneous religious entity. This article contributes to the scholarly debate on religious localization and the indigenization of Islam by illustrating that religious practices are shaped not only by normative texts but also by ongoing social and cultural negotiations mediated by local actors. Thus, this study enriches discussions on the relationship between religion and culture and offers an alternative perspective on the realities of Islamic life in Indonesia's marginalized regions.

Abstract

This study focuses on the structure of the Qur'anic tahfizh learning model, as well as the factors that facilitate and hinder its implementation. The research was carried out through a qualitative approach with a case study at the Abdullah Wa Salma Islamic Boarding School in Sumbawa. Data collection was carried out by means of in-depth interviews, direct observation involving researchers, and document studies. The collected data was then analyzed using interactive analysis techniques from Miles and Huberman. The results of the study revealed that the learning model applied was a combined modification that systematically combined the methods of halaqah, takrir, simā’i, and independent murāja’ah. The success of this model is supported by the positive role of the ustadz as an example and the existence of a structured coaching system. However, there are obstacles in the form of differences in motivation between students and lack of time to do murāja’ah together. This study concludes that the adaptive tahfizh learning model has proven to be relevant and effective in producing qualified Qur'an memorizers, as well as making contributions both theoretically through the synthesis of adaptive tahfizh learning models and practically.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the transformation of English-based Kitab Kuning learning methods through the integration of pesantren traditions and the modernization of instruction in Islamic boarding schools. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, this research was conducted at an Islamic boarding school that actively implements both traditional and modern educational practices. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis to obtain comprehensive and credible findings. The results reveal that the transformation process is carried out through several strategic steps, including the integration of traditional pesantren values with modern pedagogical approaches, the development of an adaptive and integrated curriculum, and the enhancement of teachers’ competencies in both religious and English language instruction. In addition, the use of English as a medium of instruction in Kitab Kuning learning encourages students to access broader Islamic intellectual resources at the global level. This transformation has a significant impact on students’ cognitive, linguistic, and cultural competencies. It not only strengthens their understanding of classical Islamic texts but also improves their English proficiency and intercultural awareness. Furthermore, this approach prepares students to actively participate in global Islamic discourse and da’wah in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This study investigates the obstacles encountered by Islamic Education (PAI) instructors in implementing the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum and the tactics utilized to overcome these difficulties. The Merdeka Curriculum represents a significant reform in Indonesia's educational system, prioritizing differentiated learning, learner autonomy, and flexible instructional design, necessitating that educators modify their pedagogical approaches to accommodate students' varied skills and needs. Nonetheless, its execution in Islamic Education poses unique obstacles. Data were gathered using a qualitative descriptive methodology through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis with PAI teachers at the junior secondary level. The findings identify several significant obstacles, including inadequate conceptual comprehension of the curriculum framework, insufficient professional development and socialization, challenges in creating differentiated learning materials, ambiguous operational guidelines, weak institutional support, and limited leadership engagement. These obstacles impede instructors' pedagogical preparedness and diminish the efficacy of curriculum execution in classroom practice. In response, educators have implemented many coping mechanisms, including peer cooperation, self-directed learning, and informal instructional modifications. Nonetheless, these endeavors continue to be disjointed and predominantly solitary in character. This study highlights the critical necessity for systematic and ongoing professional development, robust instructional leadership, and cohesive policy support to improve teachers' ability to effectively execute the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum in Islamic Religious Education. The results enhance overarching dialogues regarding curriculum reform and educator preparedness within faith-based educational settings.
