Abstract

This study discussed an EFL student's preferences in using seating arrangements in advanced speaking classes. The lecturers implemented seating arrangements to motivate students and encourage participation. The researcher collected the data through a closed-ended and open-ended questionnaire consisting of two types of classes: basic and advanced speaking classes. This qualitative research used a case study (Heigham & Croker, 2009) as the research design. Data were analyzed using Kember's, theory of motivation and thematic analysis. Then, the data was processed and interpreted qualitatively through the following stages: data transcript, categorizing the codes, analyzing the data, and producing the reports. The findings of this study revealed that from the six types of seating arrangements, the students prefer group pod seating as the type of seating that can build their motivation and active participation in speaking class. Lecturers always use group pod-style seating arrangements in speaking classes. Group pods encourage students to study in class and allow them to collaborate and discuss the topic provided by the lecturer. The seating arrangements make students appear more active when looking in groups. Using this seating type, the students demonstrate their enthusiasm, interact with their classmates by being active participants, pay attention to the lecturer, and understand the lecture's material. This study highlights the necessity for lecturers, higher education institutions, and students to consider various strategies during the learning process.

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study analyses the use of illocutionary speech acts by pragmatic analysis, especially expressive speech acts, used in 5 selected Samsung advertisements found in YouTube, in which the brands tried to mock or make fun of Apple, its competitor. In its relation to the study of language, advertisements are known employ the functions of language to conduct communication between the sellers or brand producents and the customers, include providing informative and persuasive contents to the customers, in which the brand conveys some message and persuade the consumers to make them buy the products. Just like other kinds of communications, speech acts are employed in advertisements. In comparative advertisements, the brands compare their features to other brands’ to give the audience insight that their products are better than their competitors, and this kind of advertisement is the focus of this study, taking the example of Samsung advertisements with comparing their products to Apple’s. Author used the classification of Searle (1979) in identifying the kind of illocutionary acts in each advertisement. Focusing on the use of expressive illocutionary acts, this study found that not all selected advertisements contain its implementation. From all five selected advertisements, only three advertisements utilize expressive illocutionary speech acts. Expressive illocutionary speech acts found in this study are criticizing, apologizing, boasting, and greeting. This study would be helpful for further research reference and additional insight in learning and discussing expressive speech acts in communication.

Abstract

This study analyzes and assesses recount texts written by students, by focusing on the language features and language structures. This analysis is aimed at fostering student’s writing abilities and communication in their personal experience. The study evaluates the generic structure starting from reorientation, events, and reorientation. The language features are evaluated based on content, syntax, and vocabulary. The data of recount texts were taken from students of SMP Negeri 1 Ketanggungan Brebes, particularly class 8A which consists of 33 students, by conducting a purposive sampling technique. The generic structure of recount texts was analyzed using a scoring rubric adapted from Gerot and Wignell (1994). Meanwhile, a content-based analysis model adapted from Brown and Lee (2015) was employed to evaluate the quality of language features, especially content, syntax, and vocabulary. The quality of students’ recount texts is categorized as excellent, good, adequate, and inadequate. The result showed that 46% of students performed excellent level in orientation and 43% of students performed good level in sequence events. However, 12% of students showed an inadequate level of reorientation. It means that students have a good ability to compile the context and background of their recounts. However, some students have difficulty in concluding their recount. The quality of the language features showed that students presented the main idea and related ideas thoroughly but still needed to improve their vocabulary. The analysis results can be a reference for students to self-evaluate their writing, especially recount texts, and improve the quality. Also, it encourages teachers to apply appropriate teaching strategies in writing classrooms, which meet students’ needs.

Abstract

Improper communication, such as insults or bad language, is a communication problem. It may harm or threaten others in various situations. Positive politeness strategy can be used as the communication strategy to avoid face-threatening acts (FTA) and make the interlocutors feel comfortable. We examined positive politeness strategies used by male and female speakers in educational TED Talks speech videos and explained the differences between male and female speakers on the use of positive politeness. The  strategies were analyzed using Brown and Levinson's (1988) politeness theory. This study used discourse analysis with pragmatic approach. Data was obtained from four educational TED Talks speech videos with two male and two female speakers. There were several stages to analyze the data using discourse study, including data identification, data categorization, data interpretation, conclusion drafting and verification. The findings suggest that male speakers often giving or asking for reasons in speeches to explain why they did it. Women often joked in their speeches to relaxed audiences and put them at ease. Also, joking strategy were applied differently by male and female speakers in delivering speeches. The female speaker had to explain the contexts and describe the images, whereas the male speaker was more spontaneous and fun. The findings of this study showed how male and female speakers use the appropriate utterances when delivering their speech in front of the audiences. Positive politeness strategies are used by the speakers to show their interest, build togetherness, and avoid conflict. Besides, the findings of this study can show the speakers’ ability in pragmatic competence by looking at their language use in specific context.

Abstract

Cohesion and coherence are critical concepts in the study of reading texts, particularly in the 7th-grade coursebook English for Nusantara, as they directly influence how students understand and engage with the material. This research examined the reading texts in this book, focusing on how cohesive devices contribute to text coherence. By applying a descriptive qualitative approach, the analysis of this study employed the cohesion theory by Halliday and Hasan (2013), whereas the coherence principles applied the theory by Oshima and Hogue (2005). The texts that were analyzed include both descriptive and procedural genres, the focus lay on identifying and analyzing elements of cohesion and coherence present in the textual content. The study found that reference was the most prevalent grammatical cohesion device across both genres, followed by conjunctions, while substitution and ellipsis were absent. Overall, the analysis showed that the reading texts in "English for Nusantara" effectively utilized cohesion and coherence, fulfilling their communicative objectives through the effective application of both grammatical and lexical cohesion devices. The findings of a study on cohesion and coherence in reading texts from the 7th-grade coursebook English for Nusantara can provide valuable insights for improving language teaching, curriculum design, and textbook development in several ways. Also, it can serve as a foundation for developing teaching practices, curricular goals, and textbooks that help students better understand and use cohesion and coherence, ultimately improving their language skills and fostering more effective learning.
