Abstract

One of the 21st-century skills that students must master is scientific literacy. A good mastery of scientific literacy helps solve real-world problems. However, the results of PISA 2018 inform that Indonesian students' scientific literacy is relatively low. This study aims to analyze students' physics scientific literacy on fluid materials. Quantitative descriptive methods using fluid material scientific literacy test instruments were used to collect data. The research sample consisted of 36 students at SHS 6 Padang. The use of students' scientific literacy in the context aspect was 35.5% in the low category, the content was 35.7% in the low category, and the competency category was 35.3% in the low category. So, students' mastery of scientific literacy on fluid materials is in a low category.

Abstract

Research related to ethnoscience from culture, local wisdom, and local potential in Indonesia in the last seven years has developed, but there are still few studies conducted in Physics Education. This study aims to identify and review ethnophysics research from various cultures in Indonesia. A systematic literature review method was used with four stages: identification, selection, eligibility, and inclusion. Of the 695 journal articles screened through Mendeley and Google Scholar applications, 12 were selected as research samples because they met the research criteria. The literature review shows that the cultural aspects studied are still limited to traditional dances, games, and houses. The research is also limited to several regions such as Jayapura, Demak, East Java, West Java, Jambi, West Sumatra, Aceh, South Sulawesi, and South Central Timor in a regional or ethnic context. The physics materials studied include measurement, waves, sound, reflection and refraction of light, lunar and solar eclipses, the concept of energy and its transformation, heat, density, gravity, Newton's law, balance, work, force, motion, magnetic fields, and electric fields. Further research can be done through cultural studies, local wisdom, or local potential from unreached areas in Indonesia. The findings of this study indicate the need for a broader and deeper exploration of ethnoscience in physics education through culture, local wisdom, and other local potential in Indonesia as a learning resource for students in the classroom.

Abstract

Video analysis experiments can be used to construct physics concepts and equations. Integrating video analysis experiments into cognitive conflict learning allows students to increase their understanding of concepts. Some research results show that students need clarification about momentum and impulse material, low conceptual understanding, and misconceptions occur. The problem of misconceptions can hinder student learning progress. One solution to overcome these problems is the application of physics teaching materials based on cognitive conflict integrated with real experiment video analysis. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of these teaching materials in improving students’ understanding of the concept of momentum and impulse. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 72 high school students with two sample classes, the experimental and the control classes, which were selected using the cluster random sampling technique. The instrument in this study was a concept test that was valid and reliable. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney test nonparametric statistics with the help of IBM SPSS Statistic 25. The results obtained by Sig. Asim < 0.05, in the rejection area of H0, means that teaching materials influence students’ understanding of concepts on momentum and impulse. Thus, conflict-based teaching materials integrating real experiment video analysis have been effective in increasing students’ conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Nowadays, 21st century skills are needed to enter the era of globalization which is marked by the ease of accessing technology, causing information to spread quickly and widely. To be able to analyze information on technology Education applies the 2013 curriculum which requires the students to be able to comprehend concepts. However, in reality students' ability to understand concepts is still relatively low than average. There are the solutions of the issue such as to design teaching materials of physics based on the cognitive conflict models to improve students' conceptual comprehension. The aim of this research such as to design as well as to determine the validity of teaching materials for physics based on cognitive conflict. This teaching material uses the syntax of the cognitive conflict-based learning model which consists of 4 syntaxes, namely: first, activation of preconceptions and misconceptions, second is presentation of cognitive conflicts, the third is discovery of concepts and similarities, and lastly reflection. In the third syntax, a virtual laboratory is integrated by PhET such as blackbody spectrum and photoelectric effect. The validation’s results of the teaching materials based on cognitive conflict on quantum phenomena are 0.88. Obtaining these values, the design of teaching materials of physics based on cognitive conflict is declared valid in the aspects of content feasibility, presentation feasibility, language feasibility, and graphic feasibility. So, the research it can be continued at the practicality and effectiveness research stage in order to produce teaching material which suitable for learning process.

Abstract

Misconception is a misunderstanding of the notion of learning material that can result in a mismatch between the conceptions held by someone and scientific concepts or concepts owned by scientists. Misconception can impede learning progress. The purpose of this study is to assess students' concept knowledge and misperception profile, as well as to identify the reasons of students' misconceptions about static fluid. The data was collected using a five-tier multiple choice test instrument with 14 items and five-level multiple choice questions. The respondents or samples in this study were 213 students from three different schools, categorized as low, middle, and high. This study used a purposive sampling strategy.Overall, the results showed the highest concept understanding in the material of the main law of hydrostatics, namely 54 students, in the category of understanding the concept partly in the material of viscosity, namely 128 students, the highest misconceptions experienced by students in the material of Archimedes' law concept as many as 144 students and the category did not understand the highest concept in the material of the main law of hydrostatics, namely 37 students. Concept understanding is in the low category in each school, the highest partial concept understanding is in high category schools followed by low category schools and medium category schools, the highest misconceptions occur in low category schools, not understanding the concept is in the low category in each school. The main cause of misconceptions is students' personal thinking.
