Abstract

Translation is one of the most essential skills in learning any language, including Arabic, as it facilitates understanding texts from other languages and enhances overall language acquisition. At Gontor for Girls First Campus, particularly among fifth-grade female students of Islamic Teacher Training Collage, translation plays a significant role in academic success. However, many students still encounter challenges in translating Arabic texts effectively. One of the primary factors believed to influence translation performance is reading comprehension. Students with strong reading comprehension skills are better able to grasp the meaning of Arabic texts, thereby improving the accuracy and fluency of their translations. This study aims to investigate the influence of reading comprehension on the translation performance of fifth-grade female students at Islamic Teacher Training Collageduring the 2023–2024 academic year. Employing a quantitative approach with a survey method, the study involved a sample of 110 students. Data were collected through reading and translation tests, along with documentation. The Spearman rho correlation test, conducted using SPSS software, revealed a significant correlation between reading comprehension and translation performance, with a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 < 0.05. Reading comprehension accounted for 12.6% of the variance in translation outcomes, while the remaining 87.4% was attributed to other factors. These findings suggest that although reading comprehension has a measurable impact on translation ability, it is not the sole determinant. Therefore, future research should explore additional cognitive, pedagogical, and affective variables that may contribute to students success in translation. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on language acquisition by underscoring the critical role of reading comprehension in translation learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the quality of Arabic language online test items at the University of Darussalam Gontor using the standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) as a reference for item quality analysis. The item analysis was conducted on three main Arabic language skills: listening, reading, and writing. The University of Darussalam Gontor was selected as it is one of the Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia that is committed to the development of Arabic language. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method. Data were collected through student score documents from Arabic online tests at the University of Darussalam Gontor, consisting of 20 items for the listening test, 29 for the reading test, and 29 for the writing test. The sample was selected using random sampling: 135 students for writing, 127 for listening, and 129 for reading. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that in terms of validity, the reading skill test showed the highest validity rate at 86%. In terms of reliability, the writing skill test demonstrated the highest reliability. The discrimination index analysis showed that the writing test had the best quality, while the difficulty index analysis indicated that the listening test had a fairly balanced distribution: 50% of items at a medium level, 33% easy, and 17% difficult. Furthermore, the analysis of test items based on ACTFL standards showed that items at the intermediate level still predominated.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop a textbook called "al-Muhadastah" and tested its effectiveness in improving Arabic language skills for all first-year students at the Mawaridussalaam Islamic Boarding School during the 2021-2022 academic years. This research was triggered by a phenomenon that according to new students learning Arabic, muhadastah lessons were difficult and boring. This was because the textbook used was not in accordance with their abilities. The research method employed the ADDIE Research and Development (R&D) concept. The design of this research was One-Group Pre-test and Post-test Design. Interviews, questionnaires, tests, and papers were employed to obtain the data. This study's results were based on the presentation and analysis of data on the effectiveness of the textbook “al-Muhadastah al-Yaumiyyah” to improve the Arabic speaking skills of the new students at Mawaridussalam Islamic Boarding School. The textbooks developed had also been declared valid by experts, comprising the experts of language, design, and content. Pre-test and post-test results showed that before using the textbooks students had a mean score of (59.17) on post-tests. After using the textbooks, that score went up to (80.50) which meant that the pre-test and post-test mean scores of the students differed significantly. Similarly, the results of the efficiency test (Paired Sample T-Test) were efficient. The results obtained from these two experiments by analysing the data from the second experiment showed a significant difference between the two experiments that Sig. (2-tailed) the result was 0,000 < (less than) 0,005. It was found that the medium might help students get better at speaking Arabic and understand the subject better.
