Abstract

The Timor deer (Cervus timorensis), an endemic species of Indonesia, faces a severe population decline caused by habitat degradation, illegal hunting, and limited conservation initiatives. Captive breeding represents a strategic measure to enhance reproductive performance and ensure species persistence. This study examined the mating behaviour of Timor deer at the Brigif-16/Wira Yudha facility, Kediri, emphasising the effects of environmental conditions, social dynamics, and enclosure management. A total of 15 adult males and 40 adult females were monitored over two months using scan sampling across four daily periods (06:00–12:00, 12:00–15:00, 15:00–18:00, and 18:00–24:00). Results indicated that mating-related behaviors accounted for 18.7% of total activities, with the highest occurrence in the morning (06:00–12:00; 42.5% of mating events). Male-to-male competition represented 11.3% of all observations, also peaking in the morning, while female affiliative behaviours reached 15.8% during the same period. Activity levels declined sharply during midday heat (12:00–15:00; 8.6% of mating events) and in the evening (18:00–24:00; 6.2%), indicating strong environmental influence. Compared with wild populations, captive deer exhibited more clustered behavioural patterns, likely due to controlled feeding schedules, enclosure design, and the absence of predators. These findings suggest that reproductive monitoring and interventions should prioritise morning sessions when mating and social interactions are most frequent. Management practices that consider natural rhythms, minimise midday heat stress, and optimise social grouping can significantly improve welfare and reproductive output. Beyond practical applications, this study contributes to the understanding of polygynous cervid reproductive ecology under captive conditions. The insights gained provide a framework for refining conservation breeding strategies not only for Timor deer but also for other threatened ungulates facing similar challenges.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of understanding the production performance of local sheep in Indonesia, particularly in Gucialit Village, Lumajang Regency, considering its significant role in meat production. This study aimed to examine the effect of age and sex on the production performance of local sheep, which includes body weight, chest girth, body length, and shoulder height. An observational method with a quantitative approach was employed. Local sheep were grouped based on sex (male and female) and age (<1 year, 1-1.5 years, and 1.5-2 years), followed by measurements of the aforementioned variables. Data were analyzed descriptively and statistically using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The results showed that age had a very significant effect (P<0.01) on all sheep production performance variables. As the age of the sheep increased, body weight, chest girth, body length, and shoulder height increased significantly. Sex differences also showed a significant effect on production performance. Male sheep had greater body weight, chest girth, body length, and shoulder height compared to female sheep within the same age group

Abstract

Introduction: Bawean Island, located in Gresik Regency, East Java, holds a unique cultural tradition in the form of Tok-Tok Sape bullfighting, where Bali and Madura cattle are specially raised for traditional contests. This study aims to analyze the production potential of livestock and the development prospects of Tok-Tok Sape as a cultural and ecotourism attraction. Methods: A survey method with structured questionnaires was used to collect primary data from cattle breeders in Tambak and Sangkapura sub-districts, complemented by observations, interviews, and microclimate measurements. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and SWOT analysis to identify strategic factors influencing development opportunities. Results: The SWOT analysis positioned Tok-Tok Sape ecotourism development in Quadrant I (coordinates 1.47; 0.73), indicating that internal strengths—including cultural uniqueness (5.12 points), active community participation, and high-quality cattle—significantly outweigh weaknesses, while external opportunities such as government support and rising tourist interest (4.48 points) present substantial potential. Based on these findings, an SO (Strengths-Opportunities) Strategy is recommended, which focuses on three key actions: (1) integrating Tok-Tok Sape into broader cultural tourism packages, (2) formalizing event management through professional training and infrastructure improvement, and (3) leveraging government support to promote Bawean cattle as a distinctive breed. The cultural event significantly enhances cattle market value by 20-30% and strengthens local identity. Conclusions: Implementing this strategy would not only support cultural preservation but also generate economic benefits for the local community, contributing to rural development and demonstrating how traditional practices can be aligned with sustainable tourism principles to foster community empowerment. The study reflects the importance of maximizing cultural assets through proactive development strategies that balance economic growth with heritage conservation.

Abstract

The waste production is expected to continue to increase every year in proportion to the increasing population of Manado City. The influential role of women when combined with waste problems ranging from preventing waste generation to processing it is considered capable of realizing the SDGs points mentioned above. The purpose of this study is to analyze the leadership style of female culinary entrepreneurs in Manado City, to analyze waste management regulations, especially culinary waste in Manado City, and to formulate a food waste management model through the leadership of female culinary entrepreneurs in Manado City . The results of the study show that the leadership style of women in some female entrepreneurs is responsible, always directing, thinking with a cool head, fair, always discussing problems faced by employees, wise, firm, trying to give employees motivation and examples (becoming a role model). Progress in waste management is in the form of decentralized waste management, in which waste management is separated for each sub-district, so there are 11 sub-districts. In its management, it still prioritizes the 3R principles (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle). Strategies that can be carried out to make residents participate in waste management are forced waste sorting programs, improving quality or increasing the number of 3R TPSTs with good management, simple composting programs at business locations or household locations and realizing socialization programs to culinary entrepreneurs that in order to be able to run a business, if it violates it, sanctions can be given or its business license revoked.

Abstract

The Porong River is one of the rivers that faces high anthropogenic impacts, such as surfactant waste from detergents. The hematology of Javanese carp (Barbonymus gonionotus) serves as a sentinel organism that can be used as a biomarker for the waters of the Porong River. The aim of this study is to analyze the water quality status of the Porong River polluted with surfactants using the STORET method, as well as its impact on the hematology of Javanese carp using regression and correlation analysis. The research employed a descriptive survey method. The results of the study indicated that the Porong River was categorized as moderately polluted. The average highest surfactant concentration reached 7.2 mg/L, leading to an increase in TSS to 107.95 mg/L and a decrease in DO to 1.80 mg/L. Surfactants exhibited a negative correlation with erythrocytes (91.2%), hematocrit (47.7%), and hemoglobin (60.6%), indicating that the higher the surfactant concentration, the lower the number of erythrocytes, hematocrit levels, and hemoglobin levels in Javanese carp. Conversely, there was a positive correlation between surfactants and leukocytes (56.7%) and blood glucose (66.7%), suggesting that the higher the surfactant concentration, the higher the number of leukocytes and blood glucose levels in Javanese carp.

Abstract

Marsilea crenata and Moringa oleifera are herbal plants widely used in various alternative medicines due to their antioxidants and estrogenic activity. The current study investigated the effect of a combination M. crenata and M. oleifera leaves ethanol extract on the growth of follicles and oocytes of goats in vitro. Twenty-four antral follicles of Ettawa Crossbred Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) were randomly grouped into four groups: K (control, without extract treatment), D1 (21.6 microgram/mL of M. crenata ethanol extract), D2 (21.6 microgram/mL of M. oleifera leaves ethanol extract), and D3 (combination of M. crenata and M. oleifera leaves ethanol extract at the dose of 21.6 microgram/mL). The follicle diameter was measured on days 0, 3, and 6 of culture, while the oocyte diameter was only examined on day 6. After being treated with the combination of M. crenata and M. oleifera leaves ethanol extract (D3), the diameter of the ovarian follicles increased significantly (p<0.05) from day-0 to day-6. D3 group also greatly enhanced estrogen levels in the follicular fluid of goats compared to a single extract. However, the diameter of the oocyte was not significantly increased after being treated with a single or combination of both extracts. Therefore, this study suggested that combination of M. crenata and M. oleifera leaves ethanol extract can be used as phytoestrogen to enhance follicular growth and estrogen levels.
