Abstract

The research focused on archetypal elements in the Disney film Cruella. The goal was to see how Estella's personality reflected Jung's archetype theory. Carl Gustav Jung identified the major archetypes, which are the result of shared ancestral experiences that can be found in art, literature, and religion but are not readily evident to the naked eye. Archetypes are inherited, universal patterns of people, actions, or personalities that have an impact on human behaviour. Watching the movie, reading the movie's transcription, selecting quotes, studying cinematographic elements, identifying the data based on the study's theme, and classifying the data to point out the issues of Jung's archetype in the movie were all used to assemble the data. According to the findings, Jung's archetypes were depicted in the film. The results of the research revealed that the main character's speech and actions reflected Jung's archetypes. According to the discussion, Estella's mental growth is obtained from three aspects: her persona, shadow, and self-realization. Self-realization is attained through breaking free from the constraints of the persona, recognizing and accepting the shadow, and balancing the two sides. Despite being difficult and perhaps dangerous, those are critical stages on the way to mental and psychic developmen

Abstract

Abstract

Drama is pedagogy with a fairly complete component that involves the body, mind, emotions, and senses in order to build individual relationships with true-life situations so that being active in language learning is needed by students. This paper will closely explore the benefits and problems of implementing drama during the process of teaching and learning a language. In language teaching, drama has been proposed as an effective way to encourage the students’ speaking skills. Essentially, drama provides more benefits, not only in students’ speaking skills but also in other aspects. However, some problems may arise in the process of drama-based language teaching. By cross-checking and reviewing eclectically from different sources, this paper presents a critical analysis of several empirical works on drama techniques used in the context of language learning. To generalize the notion, drama is indeed precious in language learning. Nevertheless, several problems in its implementation need to be considered to achieve learning objectives properly. The review results showed that some problems that may appear during the implementation of drama were undisciplined in time management, chaotic atmosphere, the usage of the first language (L1), and status at school. Hence, several suggestions are provided as solutions to the drama problems confronted by teachers.

Abstract

Racism and Injustice have put Jefferson, a poor young black man, into an electrocution for murder and burglary that he has never done. As a coloured, he cannot do anything than accept the defense attorney verdict – white American Supreme Court’s desegregation – who addresses him as a “hog.” It leaves an inferior feeling that he is nothing but a hog.  Comparing him to a hog attracts Miss Emma’s protest that she would like him walking to the electric chair as a human. Therefore, to get Jefferson understands that he is worth a man, she asks Grant Wiggins – an educated black teacher to educate him so he could die a man. In fact, the biggest challenge Grant faces when he looks at Jefferson is his feeling of looking at himself as a man experiencing the same type of racism and discrimination at the oppressive white community. Whereas, educating Jefferson to be a man is difficult as he has to make himself confident with his existence before determining ways of assuring Jefferson as an existing man who will walk to the electric chair on two feet, not a hog. Educating is underpinning people to have great control over lives and surroundings. Its importance deals with functioning the knowledge significant to empower. This is convincing that Jefferson should be educated so that he will not degrade himself as coloured because of his inability to say even a word to defend himself. Using the existentialism philosophy, Grant and Jefferson’s educational commitment in A Lesson Before Dying is discussed based on five themes of Sartre’s existentialism. It reveals that Grant does not get any positive response once he starts teaching. Gradually, Jefferson speaks to him after being attracted by his personal feelings. Grant’s ultimate achievement is when he can make Jefferson writes a diary, to portray some individual matters. What Grant has accomplished is his ability to link the themes, relevant to the philosophy of education. Grant succeeds in transforming Jefferson as a man who has dignity.

Abstract

This research focuses on ethnocentrism in Edward Zwick’s The Last Samurai. It is intended to identify how ethnocentrism is depicted and reflected in the life of samurai in the movie The Last Samurai. The ethnocentrism theory by William G. Sumner will be used to analyze the movie. The data were obtained by watching the film, reading the movie script and cinematographic elements, identifying data based on the topic of study, and categorizing the data with respect to the theoretical framework. Based on the analysis, the findings show that there are three aspects of ethnocentrism; first, loyal to in-group norms; second, express in-group pride; third, judge and underestimate the out-group. These three features of ethnocentrism create a deep perception in their dominant culture to others.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the teachers’ barriers in implementing collaborative learning in EFL classrooms. The study was conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo with two teachers as the participants. Additionally, the study employed a qualitative research method by using an in-depth interview to obtain the data. The findings of the study showed that it is difficult to assess students in collaborative work activities besides organizing the doings in the approach. To solve the problems, teachers should pay more attention to students’ group performance, the social interaction, and mutual support of each member of the group rather than focus on group productivity and individual performance in assessing the students’ achievement.

Abstract

The prophet’s cartoon is an immense controversy for France and a country with a Muslim majority. As the France President, Emmanuel Macron has rarely gained critic toward the use of language when conveying his political discourse in the prophet cartoon case. Thus, this study explores Macron’s euphemism expressions in his political interview with Al Jazeera on the prophet cartoon. This paper also examines the effect (perlocutionary act) of Macron’s euphemism and then uses them as a means of teaching inferential reading comprehension in secondary school. This qualitative study employed transcription and documentation techniques to obtain the data. Macron’s euphemism was taken from his political interview on October 31, 2020 with Al-Jazeera, and comments of Macron’s political interview on YouTube are also used for the sample of the perlocutionary act. Moreover, Macron’s euphemism in YouTube is associated with euphemism in Jakarta Post online newspaper to be used as a means of teaching inferential reading comprehension. This study relied on the kind of euphemism by Rawson (1981), euphemism formation by Šebková (2012), perlocutionary act by Austin (1962), and inferential reading theory by Westwood (2008). In brief, it has been found that Macron utilized many positive euphemisms with widening formation to maintain his ideology and to shape the views of the world’s Muslims. Two perlocutionary acts (expression of acceptance and rejection) were also discovered, and Macron’s euphemism could be used as a means of teaching inferential reading comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract: As foreign language learners and non-native speakers, high school students require to know other different cultures from their own to be actively involved in the process of acculturation and acquisition: social norms and cultural aspects, are inevitably. Intercultural awareness should be implemented in teaching and learning process. This paper aims at investigating techniques to develop students’ intercultural awareness in the EFL classroom. This is based on the research question: How is intercultural awareness through film in the EFL classroom? It is also argued that using film has much contributed in educational setting. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The data were gained from the observation of students’ feedback through writing their responses after watching ‘Freedom Writers Diary’ as their journal writing. The findings showed that students found film was very beneficial. Firstly, films provided entertainment value. Secondly, they were well-thought of a reward that could carry students to a next higher step in target topic than traditional textbooks would. Thirdly, films might strengthen students’ emotions and lastly encourage them to deal with the topics, especially to gain intercultural awareness than their textbooks. Further research needs to examine aspects of intercultural awareness students elicit from the film. Keywords: film; intercultural awareness; high school students, EFL classroom; journal writing

Abstract

Refusal strategies is part of threatening act of the face which is included in one part of modesty. Refusal is a phenomenon in language education especially in classrooms. Students often refuse lecturer instructions when they take classes. One of refusal strategies is disagreement which is part of the traditional politeness theory. In language teaching, not only students but also lecturers also often disagree with students and differences of opinion are also needed for students. In this study, the refusal strategies focus on students in expressing disagreement on the context of reducing face threats. In the Asian context, there are various differences of opinion expressed by Asian EFL learners. In this study, the refusal strategies occurred in the classroom when the lecturer gave instructions. These refusal strategies can be one way of communicating to opponents talking about disagreement in both the lecturer and students. This study observed differences refusal strategies of lecturer instruction in the context of language classes in Asia with heterogeneous students (Indonesian, Malaysian, and Thai students). The results of this study are almost all Asian students using refusal strategies of "regret" as a reflection that Asians have a high intimacy. In addition, Indonesia and Malaysia have similarities in the refusal strategy, which is using "negative willingness" which shows their inability as their refusal. On the other hand, Thailand uses "future acceptance" as a form of their refusal by delaying acceptance when rejecting something.
