Abstract

An encounter with ominous objects or situations that causes one to feel uneasy, frightening, or afraid is known as an uncanny experience. It involves both feelings and situations that make someone uneasy. This article focused on the uncanny feelings in Lovecraft's two well-known short stories, "At the Mountain of Madness" (1930) and "Whisperer in the Darkness" (1931). By employing Sigmund Freud's psychological notion of "the uncanny", the study revealed that the uncanny attracts to readers in a variety of ways. They are simple overriding ideas that have been imprinted in the character's long-suppressed memories and are reinforced by the monstrosity's appearance. It focuses on both the monster's incredible physical characteristics and the characters' insanity or fear as a result of their unconsciousness. Their reality is broken, and the characters are unaware of the condition of the item as a result, supporting Freud's theories on repressed memories in the unconscious that emerge as a psychological defense mechanism.

Abstract

The importance of language in expressing ideas and ideologies has always been a focus of public debate in politics. The persons in charge of the reins of power become a source of concern, as well as the language they use. As a result, this research looks into the speech acts, language styles, and how they express peace values from Biden’s victory speech. A qualitative research design was used. Biden’s pragma stylistics and peace values were extracted from his victory speech in Wilmington, Delaware on November 7, 2020. This study focused on three aspects, namely: categories of illocutionary acts, language style based on sentence structure, and peace values. The data were analyzed following these stages: data condensation, data display, and drawing/verifying conclusions. The results showed that the most common illocutionary type employed in diverse language styles in Biden’s victory speech was commissive. Presumably, politicians have become accustomed to making promises or making commitments in order to entice citizens to vote for them. In addition, two types of peace values (inner peace and social peace) were discovered along with three types of language styles: parallelism, antithesis, and repetition (epizeuxis, anaphora, and anadiplosis), with more than half of the data employing parallelism as the language style. The majority of Biden’s speech focused on social peace to keep social life free of internal strife.

Abstract

The literary genre known as "digital literature" includes works of fiction and nonfiction written only for digital media such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. Because of its convenient qualities, this genre may be read and enjoyed anywhere, especially when it has already been posted to a digital site. Such literary works might not offer universal traits like those of works on paper. This is just unusual in that it is solely made with digital tools. Digital literature may provide particular techniques to reading and analyzing it, since the academic world likewise moves toward paperless resources. The current study examines the difficulties, limitations, and potential solutions for seeing digital literary works as online resources, using some novel methods from literary and cultural studies and multimodality that may be used to evaluate digital literary texts. The article presents and examines a few ideas that will significantly improve the actions and reactions of EFL students’ active participation in literary criticism and analysis

Abstract

Ecocriticism is defined as “the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment” (Glotfelty, 1996: 18). The culture is the impact of human and their beliefs in how they live and how they benefit the environment. Thus, ambivalence related to the change of the culture characterizes the people (Bhabha, 1998: 12). This study uses ecocriticism approach aiming to answer questions: 1) How is human and nature relationship represented in Silko’s Ceremony and Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day?; and 2) How does the relationship reveal conflict between tradition and modernity? There are underlined points need to emphasize from both novels of Silko’s Ceremony and Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day through ecocriticism approach. The first is humans’ attitudes toward nature can be either nurturing or destructing. The second is the conflict between tradition and modernity which is underlying this study parted into two, mainly the differences of tradition and modernity and the crashes between both cultures which involve humans and their attitudes toward nature. Tradition and modernity – as cultures here are seen as result of human and nature co-existence. The last point is the impacts of tradition and modernity. The notable impacts from cultures as the effect of human and nature correlation are ambivalence and conformity

Abstract

Hollywood is an important media for the United States in spreading Western ideology. The hundreds years, Hollywood has featured various characters from different cultures and countries. However, they have suffered from cultural racism along with other minority groups. In American movie, the East depicted as ignorant and backward with a considered inferior culture compared to the west. This situation is known as orientalism, has influenced and controlled the mass media (films) and Western society's perceptions. This study aims to determine how eastern culture is depicted in the American film, The Karate Kid. This study uses Edward Said's Orientalism theory, which explained how the westerner views the east. The analysis concludes that the Hollywood industry reflects the superiority of the west over China through the character of Dre Parker. Hence, the portrayal of Chinese characters is displayed with stereotypes such as yellow faces, skin color racism, slanted eyes, bullying, and alcoholic habit.

Abstract

Having been colonized by Britain, Ireland was in a very deprived condition for a very long period, especially for poor Catholic Irish. Britain had destroyed Irish civil rights by forcing them in a massive potato plantation merely to fulfill British people’s need for food, which caused the Irish in a great famine and poverty. Written by an Irish playwright in 1980, which is set in agricultural land, northern side of Ireland, Brian Friel’s Translations illustrates clearly the suffering of Irish villagers in 19th century. By applying Homi K. Bhabha’s post-colonialism theory, the dialogues from the play are analyzed to explain Irish cultural identity conflict. This play is analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative method. The result of analysis reflects the mimicry concept from Bhabha, in which it shows an ambition that Irish tradition must be vanished and replaced by British tradition. The dialogues in Brian Friel’s Translation describe that Irish language and tradition which tells a lot of Greek mythology must be replaced with the culture of Standard English language. The translations on Irish local place names into English language are forced for the sake of British imperialism importance in the Ordnance survey.
