Abstract

Science literacy is one example of a form of literacy that is important to introduce to children from an early age because at this time they are full of enthusiasm and curiosity about new things. However, currently, science literacy learning at Mutiara An-Naafi’u Kindergarten has not been implemented optimally. In the classroom, learning is still dominated by the use of LKA and the lecture method so that children do not get direct experience which causes children’s science literacy skills not to develop properly. In this study, agroschooling was utilized as a means of science literacy skills in early childhood at Mutiara An-Naafi’u Kindergarten. This study is intended to determine and assess the effectiveness of agroschooling in improving early childhood science literacy skills. This study used a type of quantitative research with an experimental approach using a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects involved in the study were kindergarten B group students totaling 27 students. Data were extracted using observation, interview, and test techniques. In addition, data analysis techniques with normality test, T-test, and N-Gain test were also applied with the help of IBM SPSS Statistic 27. Based on the results of the paired sample t-test test, a significance value of 0.00 <0.05 was obtained, indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. So it can be concluded that agroschooling is effective in improving literacy skills.

Abstract

A pronunciation-learning attitude is essential to help students improve their pronunciation proficiency. It is problematic when students do not care about learning proper pronunciation in the process of teaching and learning. Several studies have investigated EFL students perceptions toward attitudes of pronunciation learning. However, little research focused on the role of gender on students attitudes in this context. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate students attitudes toward English pronunciation learning related to gender. An explanatory sequential mixed-method approach, integrating questionnaires of Gardner 1985s Attitude Motivation of Test Battery (AMTB) and Elliot 1995s Pronunciation Attitude Inventory (PAI) and interviews, was employed in this study. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were used to analyse quantitative data gathered from 151 students. For qualitative data, the semi-structured interview transcripts of eighteen participants were analysed using thematic analysis. The questionnaires reveal that the students had positive pronunciation learning attitudes, and no significant differences were found between females and males. Moreover, based on the results of the interviews, the students believed that proper pronunciation learning is important to make the message understood. Reflecting on the study results, it is hoped that English lecturers select more practical pronunciation teaching media that can make students more involved in the teaching and learning process and contribute to English pedagogy about the importance of improving learners positive attitude in pronunciation learning.

Abstract

This study focused on how interlanguage pragmatics (ILP) is manifested in a multicultural environment. Learners ability to make requests has received considerable attention in ILP research because requests are intrinsic face-threatening acts. The question this study aimed to address was to what extent a culture has an impact on the direct and indirect level of request strategies. The data were collected from thirty participants (fifteen males and fifteen females) representing five nationalities (Russian, Indonesian, Pakistani, Jordanian, and Hungarian) and studying at the University of Pannonia. The Discourse Completion Test (DCT) developed by Hendriks (2002) was used as an instrument, containing different situations to which the participants had to respond. The linguistic and cultural background of the participants was identified using an online tool, namely the Language History Questionnaire. The participants responses were then recorded and transcribed. The direct and indirect levels of the requests were analyzed by categorizing the head act and the internal (syntactic and lexical) and external modifiers. The data showed that the participants generally used more indirect strategies in making requests (86.2% indirect, 13.8% direct), especially those from Indonesia. Participants from Pakistan were the most direct in making requests. Moreover, they used more external modifiers than other participants to compensate for their directness.

Abstract

The digital era presents challenges and opportunities for Islamic boarding schools to empower students in the field of entrepreneurship. Training on the use of digital e-commerce platforms at the Al Jauharen Islamic Boarding School in Jambi aims to improve students' entrepreneurial skills and interests. This activity uses a participatory approach through theory, practice, and mentoring sessions. A total of 30 students took part in the training, with pre-tests and post-tests used to measure understanding. The results showed that 85% of participants experienced an increase in understanding, and 78% were interested in starting an independent business. Several students have succeeded in marketing products through platforms such as Shopee and Instagram. The obstacles faced include time management and limited access to technology. This training is effective in improving digital skills and entrepreneurial motivation, but requires further mentoring and technological support so that students' businesses are sustainable. With these positive results, it is hoped that similar training can be implemented in other Islamic boarding schools as an effort to empower the economy and develop students' competencies in the digital era. Abstract

A challenge with self-borrowing services is the investment cost for both software and hardware. A software license is required to connect INLIS [Integrated Library System] Lite with Radio Frequency Identification [RFID], which results in a high cost, especially when the software is only compatible with specific RFID devices. This study aims to look at the INLISLite Library Information System, focusing on implementing a self-borrowing service using microcontrollers and RFID technology. In this research, system development uses the prototyping method. This study developed a self-borrowing module for INLISLite without the need for licensed connector software. Additionally, the module is compatible with various microcontrollers and RFID devices that are readily available. The research proposes a novel model that utilizes RFID technology and NodeMCU ESP8266 for the INLISLite Library Information System. RFID sensors read book data from tags, while the NodeMCU microcontroller facilitates communication between the RFID system and the server, allowing automatic transmission of book data to the INLISLite database. This setup enables seamless self-service borrowing, which was tested successfully, supporting processes such as logging in, scanning book data, and updating loan status in the database.

Abstract

As of August 2023, a total of 39 stunting cases were recorded in the service area of Sekaran Public Health Center RTIU, covering five sub-districts. This study aims to analyze the risk factors contributing to the occurrence of stunting in the designated area.  Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the study gathered in-depth data through semi-structured interviews and field observations, involving eight purposively selected families with stunted children. Data collection was complemented by triangulation with community health workers and Posyandu cadres. Thematic analysis, following Braun and Clarke’s six-phase model, was used to identify emerging patterns and themes. The findings indicate that environmental conditions such as sanitation, toilet facilities, clean water sources, drainage systems, and housing floors were generally adequate. However, many mothers had a history of anemia and received only basic antenatal care, often from private providers. After childbirth, exclusive breastfeeding was rarely practiced, and children were frequently spoon-fed less than three times daily. This suboptimal nutritional intake was primarily due to the parents' work demands and the delegation of caregiving responsibilities to grandmothers or nannies. Additionally, the performance of the Integrated Health Service (Posyandu) in the area was limited to weighing and height measurement activities, without substantial educational or follow-up components. The results of this study imply that interventions to reduce stunting must extend beyond infrastructure and include behavioral changes in nutrition and caregiving practices. The limitation of this study lies in the small number of participants and its localized focus, which may not fully represent broader demographic variations. Future research is recommended to include larger and more diverse samples to enhance the generalizability of findings and explore the effectiveness of integrated, community-based interventions.

Abstract

The Nasi Hadap-Hadapan tradition is a significant ceremonial practice of the Batubara community in North Sumatra, Indonesia, characterized by symbolic actions and culturally embedded communication. Despite its rich communicative features, this tradition has not been thoroughly examined through a pragmatic linguistic lens, particularly using a mixed method approach. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the exploratory sequential mixed method in analyzing the forms, functions, and meanings of speech acts within the Nasi Adap-Adapan tradition. The qualitative phase involved participatory observation and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and ceremony participants to identify pragmatic patterns and sociocultural meanings. The quantitative phase analyzed 145 speech acts transcribed from video recordings, categorized into five types based on Searle’s classification: expressive, directive, representative, commissive, and declarative. The findings revealed that expressive (33.8%) and directive (28.3%) speech acts were the most dominant, emphasizing the ceremony’s function in fostering emotional bonds and guiding ritual procedures. These acts were embedded within cultural symbols, such as food offerings and customary phrases. The mixed method approach proved effective in capturing both the linguistic structure and sociocultural context of ceremonial communication. This study highlights the importance of integrated methodologies in pragmatic research, particularly in documenting and analyzing traditional oral practices within non-Western cultural contexts. Keywords: mixed method, pragmatic analysis, speech acts, cultural tradition, Batubara community
