Abstract

This study aims to estimate the prevalence of Stunting and Wasting in Sumatra in 2022 using nonparametric regression methods, specifically the Nadaraya-Watson Kernel and Penalized Spline regression models. Both models were applied to assess the relationship between these two correlated response variables and various predictor variables, such as low birth weight, sanitary facilities, poor population, and exclusive breastfeeding. The results showed that the Nadaraya-Watson Kernel regression, particularly using the Gaussian kernel, provided the best fit with minimal prediction error, as indicated by its low Generalized Cross-Validation (GCV) value of 0.024 and high R-squared values (0.9992 for Stunting and 0.9995 for Wasting). In contrast, the Epanechnikov kernel and Biweight kernel produced higher GCV values (0.110 and 0.356, respectively), indicating less optimal performance. For the Penalized Spline model, optimal parameters were determined with a smoothing parameter λ of 5 and 3 knots, which balanced model flexibility and smoothness. This research underscores the potential of nonparametric regression techniques in capturing complex relationships in health data and provides insights for improving interventions aimed at addressing child malnutrition in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the body response occurred immediately after bleep test after undergoing a pandemic period of more than one year. This research is an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach, using the purposive sampling technique. The research subjects were 43 students, 14 women and 29 men with the criteria (1) sports students who were physically active three times a week during the last 1-2 months; (2) no injury or (3) illness in the last 3-7 days. The instruments used are polar heart rate monitor h-10 (measure heart rate), Omron HBF 375 Karada Scan (assess the percentage of water in the body), and urine color scale (dehydration predictor). Data analysis through homogenity test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, and Pearson Correlation test. The findings of this research were female (30.2 ± 2.63) and male (36.8 ± 5.31) VO2Max concluded as fair category. There was no significant relationship between heart rate with body water (0.071 > 0.05) and urine color (0.557 > 0.05), even body water and urine colour (0.10 > 0.05). The pandemic period is proven to make fitness levels stand in a fair category. Heart rate, body water percentage, and dehydration do not have a significant relationship with each other.

Abstract

Children's general well-being is greatly influenced by physical fitness and leading a healthy lifestyle, although there are differences depending on the sociocultural context. The objective is to examine how healthy lifestyle choices affect school-age children's levels of physical fitness in Pakistan and Indonesia. The study provides valuable insights for educators, health practitioners, and policymakers to design strategies that promote healthier behaviours among children in diverse cultural settings. Methods: Researchers conducted cross-sectional research comparing 375 junior high school pupils from Pakistan (n = 182) and Indonesia (n = 193). The Multistage Fitness Test (MFT) was used to measure physical fitness levels, and a healthy living questionnaire was used to collect data. To assess the differences between the two groups, statistical analyses were conducted using independent sample t-tests, homogeneity tests, and normality tests. Result: The homogeneity and normality tests confirmed that the data were suitable for parametric analysis. The two groups' levels of physical fitness (t = 3.431, p = 0.000) and healthy lifestyle (t = 4.059, p = 0.000) differed significantly, according to the independent sample t-test. Compared to their Pakistani counterparts, Indonesian students demonstrated greater levels of physical fitness and a healthier lifestyle. These results suggest that students' fitness levels and lifestyle choices may be influenced by sociocultural, environmental, and educational conditions. Conclusion: Compared to Pakistani students, Indonesian students demonstrate greater levels of physical fitness and healthier lifestyle choices, underscoring the need for focused interventions to enhance the well-being of children in both nations. These findings can help schools, community organisations, and public health authorities develop targeted programs to foster healthy habits and improve youth fitness across different sociocultural contexts. Future studies ought to investigate the root reasons for these disparities and create policies that encourage students in various sociocultural contexts to lead healthier lives. Abstract

This study aims to estimate the prevalence of stunting and wasting in the southern region of Sumatra using a bivariate nonparametric regression framework based on the Nadaraya-Watson Kernel and Penalized Spline estimators with Penalized Weighted Least Squares (PWLS). The analysis utilizes data from the 2023 Indonesian Toddler Nutrition Survey, comprising 60 regencies and cities across five provinces, namely Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Lampung, Jambi, and Bangka Belitung. By jointly modeling stunting and wasting as correlated response variables, this study seeks not only to compare methodological performance, but also to provide empirical insights into the nonlinear patterns underlying child nutritional outcomes influenced by maternal-child health and socioeconomic conditions. Model performance was evaluated using the Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and the coefficient of determination (R²). The empirical results indicate that the Nadaraya-Watson Kernel estimator outperforms the Penalized Spline approach, yielding a substantially lower prediction error (MSE = 0.0008), high goodness-of-fit values (R² of 99.98% for stunting and 99.95% for wasting), and relatively small RMSE values of 0.038 and 0.017, respectively. These findings suggest that the kernel-based estimator provides stable and accurate predictions within the data structure considered, particularly in capturing complex nonlinear relationships between predictors and nutritional outcomes. Furthermore, the results reveal that the effects of health-related and socioeconomic factors vary across different prevalence levels, underscoring the importance of nonparametric methods in accommodating heterogeneous and nonlinear response patterns. In line with previous evidence emphasizing integrated, multisectoral approaches to child nutrition improvement, the findings highlight the relevance of combining health interventions with broader social protection strategies. Nevertheless, the interpretation of results is subject to methodological caution, given the limited sample size and the aggregated nature of the data. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of bivariate nonparametric regression as a complementary analytical tool for health data analysis and evidence-based policy formulation related to stunting and wasting reduction.

Abstract

This article analyzes the politics of mobilizing support for the empty-box option in the 2024 Pangkalpinang local election, positioning it as a form of citizens’ electoral resistance to the narrowing of competition under single-candidate dominance. Using a descriptive qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentary analysis the study maps: (1) patterns of mobilization and volunteer networks, (2) movement resources (socio-cultural capital) and their negotiation with elite political capital, and (3) policy implications arising from regulatory gaps after an empty-box victory. The findings show that mobilization was organic and grew through cross-class community nodes (e.g., BOTAK, PKK, and Baju KOKO), supported by cultural framing, network-based communication (WhatsApp/social media), and solidarity practices that substituted for conventional political logistics. At the same time, the empty-box victory unfolded within local power relations in which political capital and kinship politics shaped the opportunity structure and narrowed formal channels of competition. The article offers recommendations to strengthen the governance of single-candidate local elections: clarifying the status and rights of the empty box in electoral regulation, strengthening internal party democracy, and developing mechanisms to prevent nomination cartelization so that electoral competition remains meaningful.

Abstract

Semiparametric spline regression has become an increasingly popular method for modeling data due to its flexibility and objectivity, especially as a parameter estimation method. Spline functions are highly effective in semiparametric regression because they offer unique statistical interpretations by segmenting each predictor variable in relation to the response variable. Bivariate semiparametric regression can be applied to data where observations tend to have disparities between regions, making it suitable for poverty data, particularly the poverty depth index and the poverty severity index. The objective of this research is to analyze the models of the poverty depth index and poverty severity index, as well as to perform segmentation and interpretation of these models. This study utilized observations from 60 districts/cities in the southern part of Sumatra. Several predictor variables were considered, including the percentage of households with a floor area of ≤19 m², labor force participation rate, and life expectancy as parametric components, while the nonparametric components included the average length of schooling and the percentage of households with tap water sources. The estimation methods used were penalized least squares and penalized weighted least squares, involving a full search algorithm for selecting the number and location of knots. The results of the study indicated that the penalized weighted least squares method was the best estimator, with an MSE value of 0.3122 and two knots for each predictor, yielding GCV values of 4.3604 and 4.0794.Keywords: semiparametric regression; bivariate response; poverty; knot; penalized weighted least square
