Abstract

Indonesia’s high vulnerability to natural disasters has placed increasing importance on the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) education. Much of the existing literature emphasizes disaster education in scientific school subjects, but physical education (PE) remains underexplored yet promising. This qualitative study investigated the perceptions of PE teachers in disaster-prone regions of Central Java, Indonesia, and the implementation of disaster education in their teaching practices. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 14 junior high school PE teachers, thematic analysis revealed three central themes: 1) the contextual realities shaping teachers’ experiences, 2) the perceived value of PE as a vehicle for disaster education, and 3) the creative pedagogical strategies in disaster education. Despite limited curriculum support, teachers integrated disaster education through warming-up routines, simulation games, and fitness activities to develop agility, coordination, and leadership among students. The findings highlight PE’s applied and experiential aspects as well as its potential for interdisciplinary collaboration. However, the study also exposes systemic barriers, such as centralized policy constraints and lack of institutional support. To enhance disaster preparedness in schools, the study advocates for policy reforms that integrate disaster education into the PE curriculum and promote localized and context-sensitive practices. These efforts can contribute meaningfully to student safety, community resilience, and holistic educational development.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a teacher's handbook designed for handball learning grounded in a sociocultural approach, with the objective of enhancing empathy among elementary school students. The research was motivated by global concerns regarding the decline in children's empathy, attributed to increased digitalization and limited direct social interactions, particularly in urban areas such as Sleman. Employing a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design, the study involved two groups of students from different elementary schools. The experimental group utilized the teacher's handbook, while the control group received conventional learning. The study instruments included a validated and reliable empathy questionnaire, alongside observations of empathetic behaviors during the learning process. Statistical analysis revealed that the experimental group experienced a significant increase in empathy levels compared to the control group, with a mean difference of 6.2 points. The t-test indicated a significant value (p < 0.05), signifying a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These findings demonstrate that the sociocultural-based handball learning model is effective in fostering empathy among students and offers a practical solution for integrating character into physical education through developmentally appropriate game based learning in elementary schools.

Abstract

The representation of moral value in English language textbooks remains an underexplored issue, especially in relation to cultural diversity. This study investigated how moral values, as indicator of cultural diversity, was represented in junior high school English textbooks. Data were collected through documentation of the English for Nusantara Grade VIII textbook and supported by semi-structured interviews with three English teachers. The study employed Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on Fairclough’s (2001) framework within a qualitative approach. Moral values were analyzed using six indicators proposed by Patel and Sharma (2021). The findings revealed that five of these indicators were present in the textbook, with responsibility being the most prominent. Other values such as honesty, fairness, compassion, and self-discipline appeared less frequently. Simplicity as the moral value also found in this study. The teachers emphasized the crucial role of integrating moral values to foster students' social behavior, including empathy, tolerance, respect, and collaboration. This study contributes to understanding how English textbooks promote cultural values and offers insights for enhancing the effectiveness of moral education in language learning.

Abstract

In a classroom context, teachers are unavoidable to correct something that a student has said, done or written. Sometimes, the corrections are in the form of suggestions. However, giving suggestion can be challenging, as it can threaten the student’s negative face. To reduce this threat, politeness strategies are necessary. This study was conducted to (1) identify the types of politeness strategies employed by an EFL teacher in delivering suggestions, (2) examine students’ perception of their teacher’s politeness strategies. This research is a qualitative case study involving an English teacher and 34 eleventh-grade Senior High School students. Data were collected through observations and interviews, and then analyzed using Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. The result revealed that the teacher employs a balanced combination of politeness strategies, with positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategies each used 26% of the time, and bald on record used 22%. These strategies are employed for various reasons, including ensuring clear communication, maintaining a supportive classroom environment, and fostering closer teacher-student relationships. Additionally, students’ perceptions revealed that the teacher’s use of polite and indirect language contributes to a positive learning atmosphere, enhancing student comfort and engagement. However, this study is limited by its focus on a single teacher and a specific group of students, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to broader contexts.

Abstract

The trend in deep learning in English language education has encouraged greater attention toward curriculum models that connect language learning with meaningful classroom interaction. Within this research, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Language Acquisition framework has gained attention for its learner-centred and inquiry-oriented approach to language education. This study aims to examine the potentials and challenges of IB Language Acquisition in improving English language learning. Using a systematic literature review design guided by PRISMA, the study selected ten peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025 from Scopus, ERIC, SAGE Journals, Google Scholar, and Semantic Scholar. Our findings show that IB Language Acquisition engage deeper learning by emphasising language as part of meaning-making, identity construction, inquiry, conceptual engagement, critical thinking, and multilingual interaction. The findings also indicate a shift from form-focused language learning toward sociocultural and epistemic perspectives where language functions as a medium for constructing understanding and participating in learning processes. However, the implementation of IB Language Acquisition remains shaped by contextual challenges, including procedural inquiry practices, unequal institutional readiness, assessment demands, and tensions surrounding multilingualism and academic English expectations.

Abstract

Government policies are crucial in shaping English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers' lesson planning, often creating conflicts between national mandates and local classroom realities. This study investigates how senior EFL teachers in Surakarta, Central Java, navigate these policy directives while designing lesson plans. The research examines the impact of rigid policy enforcement on teachers' autonomy and adaptability in meeting diverse student needs. Using a biographical narrative inquiry approach, the study captures teachers' lived experiences with policy implementation. Three senior EFL teachers with over a decade of teaching experience participated in the study. Data collection involved document analysis of curriculum guidelines and lesson plans, complemented by in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed using an interactive qualitative analysis model, focusing on data condensation, display, and conclusion verification. Findings indicate that lesson planning is often treated as a bureaucratic obligation rather than an instructional tool due to inconsistent policy guidelines and insufficient institutional support. Teachers struggle with unclear requirements, lack of format uniformity, and minimal feedback, leading them to rely on past lesson plans rather than creating context-specific ones. To enhance lesson planning effectiveness, teachers emphasize the need for standardized exemplars, expert-developed guidelines, and professional training that prioritizes pedagogical impact over policy compliance. The study recommends balancing regulatory mandates with teacher autonomy to make lesson planning more relevant and effective in classroom instruction
