Abstract

Lecturers’ talk during classes stimulates active students, as a means of a successful lecture. This study investigated the levels of questioning used by lecturers. The data, collected from the participants having more than ten year professional experience, were described qualitatively. Observation and interview were used to generate the data. The findings of this study indicated the questions level based on Bloom’s revised taxonomy. Mostly used was the low and middle order thinking, less encouraging students’ critical thinking. Noted 66 questions or about 73% of the total question belong to low order. 22 questions or 25% of all were included medium order. The rest of them, the least of all, 2 questions or equally to 2% were high order. Thus, students and lecturers could use the Bloom taxonomy to administer class activities with sufficient preparation, while further research might examine how to employ high order thinking skill in various areas.

Abstract

Conditions and facilities of English language classes in the remote area encourage the negotiation of learning to solve problems. This narrative research aims to reveal strategies of pre-service teachers of the SM3T program in the process of the negotiation of English language learning. The study used diaries and interview transcripts from four teachers from Pidie Jaya and Sumba. The findings showthat teachers use interpersonal (IPS) and instructional (IS) strategies in the negotiation process. In Pidie Jaya, IPS strategies consist of the use of local languages and the help of local people. Meanwhile, IS strategies comprise learning groups and introduction to learning activities. In Sumba, teachers make language adjustment and establish rapport and informal communication as IPS strategies and they carry out buddy teaching and assign homework as IS strategies. Abstract

The importance of English reading skills in developing overall English literacy has made reading instruction one of the primary focuses in Indonesia's English teaching. Regardless of the high value of reading skills, the teaching of reading has not been successful in developing the reading comprehension ability of Indonesian students. This exploratory case study research examines teachers' beliefs and practices in teaching reading in Islamic secondary schools. It focuses mainly on how teachers view good reading instruction and the problems they encounter in teaching reading. Additionally, this paper explores how teachers implement reading instruction in their contexts. Data were obtained from 31 senior Islamic secondary school English teachers from six different provinces in Indonesia. Data collection methods comprised document analysis, participant classroom observation, personal in-depth interviews, written guided reflections, and focus group discussions. The data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The research findings show that despite admitting the importance of teaching reading in schools, the English teachers of Islamic senior high schools found teaching reading challenging. The teachers identified several problems in reading instruction in their classrooms, such as lack of strategies to teach vocabulary, limited repertoire of strategies to teach reading, the use of teaching materials, and improving students' reading motivation and autonomy. As a result, they have not been able to implement classroom practices that effectively develop students' reading comprehension. This issue calls for the innovation and development of teaching reading strategies to improve reading instruction quality in Islamic secondary schools in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study focuses on the experiences of pre-service teachers that may trigger anxiety and delve into the potential benefits and effectiveness of FLTA in enhancing language acquisition and proficiency. By conducting in-depth studies and investigations on this topic, researchers look at the impact of FLTA. They can better understand how FLTA can optimize their problem-solving skills to facilitate language learning and provide valuable insight for language education, especially in EFL classrooms. This study used a narrative strategy to investigate the pre-service EFL teachers' experiences with teaching foreign language anxiety during their teaching practice while enrolled in the Teacher Profession Education Program. The subjects of this study were 3 English pre-service teachers who had completed teaching practice in junior and senior high schools during a professional teaching program in the city of Solo and its surroundings, Central Java, Indonesia. As a result of this study, several sources contributed to participants' experience of teaching foreign language anxiety, such as self-perception of language proficiency, leading inexperience, lack of student interest, fear of negative evaluation, and lack of time and class management. Participants in the teaching practicum also attempt to confront and overcome their worries; the strategies are personal coping strategies, professional coping strategies, social coping strategies, and institutional coping strategies. Although the participants experienced some anxiety while teaching practicum, they overcame it through various strategies. So, leading practicum activities from one meeting to the following allowed participants to develop their abilities and overcome their concerns about teaching in the EFL classroom.

Abstract

This study explores the portrayal of gender roles, gender stereotypes, and gender activities in visual representations within English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks used in Indonesian senior high schools. Using a Critical Feminist Discourse Analysis (CFDA) approach, investigates how these visual depictions promote or challenge existing gender stereotypes. The analysis focuses on textbooks used in Grades X and XI, identifying patterns in the representation of male and female characters. Key themes explored include the alignment of these portrayals with societal expectations of masculinity and femininity, especially in the contexts of professional roles and domestic roles. The findings reveal that, while traditional gender norms continue to dominate, there are emerging trends where gender roles are more diversified, particularly in the representation of women in career roles and men in caregiving or domestic settings. These results suggest that EFL textbooks gradually move toward more balanced gender representations, though traditional stereotypes remain prevalent. It emphasizes the need for a more inclusive and equitable approach to gender representation in educational materials
