Abstract

A number of studies have reported neoliberal representation in English textbooks in a variety of contexts around the world. However, the study focusing on self-entrepreneurship as one of the critical neoliberal tenets is scantily addressed. To fill this void, the present study seeks to investigate the representation of self-entrepreneurship deliberately inculcated in English textbooks. Anchored in critical discourse analysis and Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this study investigated three Business English textbooks used in higher education in Indonesian. The findings of the study revealed that the English textbooks employed role-playing, presenting celebrity and fame, exhibiting famous entrepreneur figures, presenting the distinct image of entrepreneurial figures, and portraying entrepreneur figures through article or literature to disseminate self-entrepreneurship notions displayed in a variety of discourses. The findings of the current study call to equip educational practitioners (e.g., teachers, policymakers, book designers) with critical thinking skills as well as provide them practical tools to interrogate ideology, norms, and values encapsulated within curriculum artefacts such as language textbooks.

Abstract

This present study hears voices of in-service airlines passenger handlers about conversations between them and passengers that occur in their work desks almost every day and their language problem. They will share their experience about conversations with passengers related to their job tasks or procedures, which are routine, and other non-procedural conversation topics which may occur several times. Data are gathered through in-depth interview with three in-service staffs from separated distinguished airports in Indonesia that already passed their first year working. This study reveals that in handling checking-in passengers the staffs need to be able to use English in order to demonstrate both procedural and non-procedural conversations. Dealing with their job, however, the staffs still find several language problems during the communication with English-speaking passengers which make them feel insecure. In this way, this article will present real report from in-service staffs that can be a valuable source for ESP teachers or practitioners, course developers, and researchers.

Abstract

[Understanding Teacher Written Corrective Feedback Practices in EFL Writing Classroom] Feedback is widely applied as the scaffolding learning techniques in the field of second and foreign language writing. This significance has also been recognised as a form of the students’ improving control over composing skills key element that is acknowledged as the process-based classroom. However, there is less published literature about how secondary teacher in EFL context responds to the students’ writing. Further, little is known about why teachers respond the writing in the ways they do, and the factors behind the current feedback practices. Therefore, this study addressee the tensions in the written corrective feedback type and strategy applied at a secondary school involving a teacher as its participant. It was designed as a case study aiming at (1) examining the actual feedback practice and its reason, (2) describing factors that shape teacher’s current practice in providing written corrective feedback. The data were gathered by document analysis and using interview adapted from Lee (2009) consisting of five items related to the actual practices in written corrective feedback type and strategy, followed by factors that shape those practices. The findings showed that teacher was favoured to use indirect, uncoded, hints and selective written corrective feedback. In addition, two factors were found taking the responsibility of those current practices.

Abstract

Language textbooks mainly guide language learning and teaching activities. Most of the language textbooks used to comprise a range of visual texts, such as pictures, illustrations, and photos. The study adopts the Visual Grammar Theory by Kress and Leeuwen (2006) to elucidate the pedagogical functions of visual images and explore how such images can be exploited for learning tasks from a micro multimodal perspective. The data consist of 142 visual images in Indonesian senior high school EFL textbook grades ten (X) and eleven (XI). The findings pointed out that the textbook uses visual images' full potential to fulfill pedagogical aims. Many visual images or texts in language textbooks serve information and illustrations rather than as a decorative function. Visual images may assist students to engage effectively in learning tasks by emphasizing the meaning of information presented in images and text. This study suggests that learning activities should consider multimodal texts to contribute significantly. This research aims to enhance knowledge about the pedagogical function of visual images in textbooks and can be a reference for further exploration.

Abstract

This study seeks to investigate the types of oral corrective feedback implemented in class and its effect on students’ willingness to communicate. As many as 35 senior high school students as well as the teacher were involved in the observation stage of this study and shared their perspectives about the relationship between teacher’s feedbacks on the students’ willingness to communicate through interview. The findings show that there are three types of oral corrective feedback given in the class, i.e. explicit correction, metalinguistic, and clarification request feedback. The students insist that the teacher’s oral corrective feedback does not make them reluctant to communicate to their peers or teacher in the class. Therefore, it can be concluded that teacher’s oral corrective feedback strategy does not disturb the interaction between the teacher and students in the class. It can be inferred that oral corrective feedback is necessary to be implemented in the class because it assists their second language learning.

Abstract

Mastering grammar and vocabulary in communication are seemingly insufficient for learners to communicate with different societies worldwide. For this rationale, cultures in ELT materials took a pivotal role in equipping learners with intercultural communicative competence (ICC). Hence, the researchers critically analyze two national commercial textbooks commonly used in senior high schools for the tenth and eleventh grades in any area to examine the elements of cultures and their representations. The researchers address this gap by adopting critical discourse analysis (CDA) to get a profound interpretation of data. The textual data was categorized, coded, counted, and finalized by creating a description. The result revealed that these textbooks contained elements of cultures; product (63%, 44%), person (13%, 42%), practice (19 %, 8%), and perspective (5%, 6%) in different proportions. The result also points out that there is an unbalance among culture-related items with 59%, 51% in source cultures, 11% and 26% in target, and 17% and 8% in international, which means target and international cultures are less than source cultures. This research also found universal cultures relating to cultures free in these textbooks with 13% and 18%, respectively. The finding indicated that both textbooks have imbalanced cultures, which means that target and international cultures were under-represented. The researchers suggest that other Southeast Asian, African, and Russian cultures must be considered in the textbooks. Furthermore, this research expects the stakeholders to be more concerned with designing, concerning, and choosing suitable textbooks to equip learners with diverse cultures.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe kinds of politeness strategies and features of the politeness in Javanese cultural context where Javanese people incur activities in the procurement of Javanese traditonal entertainments. The study used qualitative approach assigning 20 research subjects and analyzed 42 corpuses as the cources of data. Data of this study were divided into politeness techniques, politeness strategies, and impoliteness strategies. Results show that of five politeness strategies, one does not appear in the negotiation that is using affective tag to show a certain concern.  Four techniques that appear are: to speak indirectly, to lie politely, to use euphimism, and to use modal tags to show uncertainty. Four politeness strategies, including bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record politeness all exist as the medium of interactions. Finally, impoliteness strategies exist in the form of bald on-record impoliteness, negative impoliteness, positive impoliteness, and enternaining impoliteness.  In context of Javanese culture, this study shows its novelty that Javanese culture has its own universal cultural values in politeness.
