Abstract

The presence of waste in coastal environments can lead to increased coastal damage and burden. Most of the population's activities in Bulukumba Regency are concentrated in coastal areas, thus making this region susceptible to significant pressure from waste pollution. This research aims to determine the level of coastal area sensitivity in Bulukumba towards waste pollution. The study was conducted from October to December 2022. The research location is the coastal area of Bulukumba Regency, which includes seven subdistricts: Gantarang, Ujung Bulu, Ujung Loe, Bonto Bahari, Bontotiro, Herlang, and Kajang. Primary data were obtained through interviews and direct observations at the research locations, while secondary data were collected through literature studies and relevant institutions in Bulukumba. The results of parameter weighting using the expert judgment method indicate that five important parameters are used to assess the sensitivity of the coastal environment to waste pollution. These parameters consist of current velocity (20.27%), distance of the ecosystem from the harbor (18.92%), distance of the ecosystem from settlements (18.92%), distance of the ecosystem from rivers (17.57%), and the presence of waste on the coast (17.57%). The distribution of coastal environmental sensitivity levels to waste pollution shows that the eastern coastal areas are more sensitive to waste pollution than the southern coastal areas. The current velocity is the most significant parameter influencing the coastal environment's sensitivity to waste pollution and holds the highest weight and score across all research areas.

Abstract

Coral animals have tentacles in which there are Nematocysts in the ectoderm layer and zooxanthella in the endoderm layer, and these two components have a role as a defense and food source; this study was conducted to identify the components of Montipora danae coral tentacles. The research was conducted in Marak Island, West Sumatra, with a purposive sampling method based on the presence of M.danae. The coral samples were decalcified to separate the tissue from the skeleton. The results of this study indicate that M.danae consists of Nematocysts type sH (small Holotrich), MpM-I (Microbasic p-Mastighopore I), and H (Holotrich). Holotrich has the highest relative abundance of 74-91%, MpM-I has 3,92-20,63% and sH has 3-24%. Holotrich has larger morphometrics than sH and MpM-I, namely 72,76-82,35 μm capsule length and 19,55-24 μm capsule width. The zooxanthella density of M. danae was lower than that of normal corals at 624 cells/cm2

Abstract

Over the past five decades, there has been a growing trend in the capture of kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis), which, alongside its potential to support small-scale commercial fisheries, highlights its significance.However, there is inadequate data on this species for suitable management and conservation status. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity, population structure, and connectivity of the kawakawa in the three major fishing port in Sumatra, namely Belawan , Padang, and Lampung by using DNA mitochondria control region (d-loop) Sequence. In total, 78 sequences of kawakawa with an average size of 303 bp, we found 36 polymorphic sites and 56 haplotypes from all population were identified with DNA compatibility values of 97-100%. We found the genetic diversity values in Sumatera Island were high (h = 0.950; π = 0.034), with the highest genetic diversities value in Padang (h = 0.990; π = 0.082) and the lowest in Belawan (h = 0.929; π = 0.082). AMOVA and Fst analyses revealed no differentiation in each population (Fst = 0.005). The haplotype distribution and connectivity analyses showed genetic mixing among the three populations. This study showed a single stock at the study sites and suggests management measures at a regional level to maintain the population.

Abstract

Based on data from the OECD's Global Plastic Outlook (2022), marine debris in the world has reached 350 million tons, which dominates plastic waste. Indonesia is the second country after Tingkok which produces the most marine debris. Based on the results of the National Waste Management Information System data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (Ministry of Environment and Forestry) it shows that Indonesia produces 34.85 million tonnes of landfilled waste. Of the total, 12.13 million tonnes of waste per year is not managed in 2022. The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Joko Widodo, is very concerned and committed to the waste problem and has a target to reduce marine plastic waste by 70% by 2025 in order to achieve the target set by the President of the Republic of Indonesia. Therefore, research on marine debris in coastal areas and small islands in Indonesia is very important information to research. This research was conducted in Wangi-Wangi Waters, Wakatobi Regency on 12-15 September 2023. The aim was to determine the type, abundance and weight of marine debris and its relationship with coral cover in Wangi-Wangi Waters. The marine debris sampling method is based on two characteristics, namely the intertidal zone (sandy beach) using the shoreline survey methodology and the subtidal zone (coral reef ecosystem) using the Belt Transect method (KLHK, 2020). ). Marine debris macro criteria range from (>2.5 cm - <1 m) Based on research results, the dominant abundance of macro marine debris was found to be 187 items/m2 of plastic, followed by wood and its derivatives 162 items/m2, glass 17 items/m2, cloth and its derivatives 12 items/m2 , fiber 12 items/m2, and rubber 8 items/m2. The total weight of macro marine debris in the intertidal zone is 574.10 grams/m2 and the subtidal zone is 178.7 grams/m2. Data on live coral cover ranges from 54.33% to 73.07%, good criteria. The relationship between the abundance of macro marine debris and coral cover has an inverse relationship, the higher the live coral cover, the lower the abundance of macro marine debris in that area. Berdasarkan data OECD’s Global Plastic Outlook (2022) marine debris di dunia telah mencapai sebesar 350 juta ton yang mendominasi sampah plastik. Indonesia menjadi negara peringkat kedua setelah tingkok penghasil marine debris terbanyak. Berdasrakan hasil data sistem informasi pengelolaan sampah Nasional dari KLHK (Kementrian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan) menunjukan bahwa Indonesia  mengahsilkan 34.85 juta ton timbunan sampah dari total tersebut 12.13 juta tonsampah per tahun sampah tidak di kelola pada tahun (2022). Presiden RI Bapak Joko widodo sangat konsen dan berkomitmen dengan permasalahan sampah dan memiliki target untuk menurunkan sampah plastik laut sebanyak 70% pada tahun 2025 dalam rangka mencapai target yang telah ditetapkan oleh presiden RI. Oleh karena itu maka penelitian marine debris di wilayah pesisir dan pulau-pulau kecil Indonesia merupakan suatu informasi sangat penting untuk diteliti. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Perairan Wangi-Wangi, Kabupaten Wakatobi pada 12-15 September 2023. Bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis, kelimpahan,dan berat marine debris serta hubungannya dengan tutupan terumbu karang di Perairan Wangi-Wangi. Metode pengambilan sampel marine debris berdasarkan dua karakteristik yaitu zona intertidal (pantai berpasir) menggunakan metode survei garis pantai (shoreline survey methodology)dan zona subtidal (ekosistem terumbu karang) menggunakan metode Belt Transect atau transek sabuk (KLHK, 2020. Kriteria makro marine debris berkisar (>2.5 cm - <1.0 m)  Berdasarkan hasil penelitian kelimpahan macro marine debris yang dominan ditemukan yaitu jenis plastik sebanyak 187 item/m2, diikuti kayu dan turunannya 162 item/m2, kaca 17 item/m2, kain dan turunannya 12 item/m2, fiber 12 item/m2, dan karet 8 item/m2. Berat total macro marine debris pada zona intertidal sebesar 574.10 gram/m2 dan zona subtidal sebesar 178.7 gram/m2. Data tutupan karang hidup berkisar 54.33%-7307% kriteria baik. Hubungan kelimpahan macro marine debris dengan tutupan karang memliki hubungan yang berbanding terbalik, semakin tinggi tutupan karang hidup maka semakin rendah maka kelimpahan macro marine debris pada area tersebut.

Abstract

Mangroves are the dominant ecosystem in coastal areas and estuaries and one of the most productive ecosystems in the world. Mangroves are an essential component in a complex food chain and have the potential for the life of various marine and terrestrial biotas, microorganisms, and macroorganisms. The decomposition of mangrove leaf litter by fungal bacteria produces nutrient source that is beneficial for fish, shrimps, and crabs. This study discusses the production and decomposition rate of mangrove leaf litter in the mangrove ecosystem of Muara Pagatan, South Kalimantan. With transect and litter trap methods, litter production during the observation ranged from 218.51 - 858.28 g/m2/45day. Of the four types of mangroves found, the highest litter production was found in Rhizophora mucronata mangrove species at 858.28 g/m2/45day, followed by Bruguiera gymnorrhiza species at 268.52 g/m2/45day, and the lowest litter production was Avicennia marina mangrove species at 222.9 g/m2/45day and Sonneratia alba at 218.51 g/m2/45day. The remaining dry weight during observation ranged from 1.06 g - 2.46 g. In sum, the highest litter productivition and decomposition rate was found in Rhizophora species and litter was not completely decomposed after 45 days.

Abstract

Monitoring and assessing the items stranded on shorelines is a crucial step in addressing the threat posed by marine debris to our ocean. The objective of this study is to examine the occurrence and categorize marine debris that accumulates on the beach and mangrove area of Pulau Rambut Wildlife Reserve from the transitional season 2 to the rainy season. The abundance of marine debris is significant in transitional season 2. There is no significant difference between different seasons. The dominant form of debris among all macrodebris categories during transitional season 2 was plastic, accounting for 46.38% of the total. Single-use plastics like styrofoam, shoes, sandals, gloves, plastic wrap, and plastic sachets were found to be the most common types of large-scale plastic debris, comprising 60% of total macroplastic debris. The debris found on Rambut Island is believed to originate from debris carried by rivers that flow into Jakarta Bay. The presence of seasonal winds, currents, waves, and tides further contribute to the accumulation of debris in this area.

Abstract

Peatlands formed from long-term accumulation of partially decomposed organic matter in wetland areas. This particular ecosystem is not only capable of sequestering significant quantities of carbon but also vulnerable to forest and land fires (karhutla). Peatland produces considerable CO₂ emissions during fire occurrences, which consequently requires spatiotemporal monitoring to sustain its ecological roles and functions. This study aims to map the severity of fires in peatland ecosystems, estimate the success of post-fire restoration, and develop an Earth Engine Apps-based monitoring platform for peatland fire monitoring. Fire severity assessment and post-fire restoration success estimation were conducted in Jambi's Peat Hydrological Unit (PHU) in 2019 using the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) index derived from Sentinel-2 MSI satellite imagery. Most of Jambi PHU's fire severity and restoration levels are high. The area of PHU Jambi with high fire severity was 7,822.91 hectares, while the area with high restoration success was 23,744.69 hectares. NBR monitoring in PHU Jambi can be used to detect fire severity and restore success. The visualization of forest and land fire severity was successfully displayed on the Data Indo InaFire webGIS platform, an Earth Engine Apps-based monitoring platform.

Abstract

Biodiversity assessment surveys are necessary for establishing conservation areas. However, such surveys are typically expensive, primarily if they cover a large area and take a long time. The survey difficulty increases when applied to cryptic, sparse, and fast-moving organisms. In addition, it requires expertise in taxonomic-biota classification. The breakthrough environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding technique promises to overcome all the hurdles of assessing the potential for marine biodiversity in a non-invasive, rapid, extensive, and more effective way. We evaluated the ability of the eDNA survey to reveal the potential diversity and character of marine eukaryotes in the Lombok Island Marine Protected Area. A sampling of seawater and sediment eDNA in pore size fractions of 0.4-12 ?m and >12 ?m was carried out in the Core Zone, Non-Core Zone, and Non-Conservation Area, in east, north, and west Lombok, respectively. The detection and classification of eukaryotes using bioinformatics analysis were accomplished following extraction, amplification, and DNA sequencing. We identified 20,478 unique sequences of potential species classified in five kingdoms to 654 marine eukaryotes families. The comparison results show differences in community structure between locations, as well as differences in diversity between media and factions. The eDNA survey can assess marine biodiversity at a macro level and has implications for management in conservation areas.Keywords: Biodiversity, Marine eukaryotes, environmental DNA, the Primary V9-SSU 18S rRNA gene

Abstract

Sponges (Phylum Porifera) are a group of highly diverse, sessile, and filter-feeding basal metazoans, except spongillids. The majority of sponges are marine species that play an important role in benthic habitat by maintaining the stability of marine ecosystems through nutrient cycling, habitat provision, and bioerosion. However, marine sponges are not easily identifiable because of their lack of species-level distinctive morphological features, which limits efforts to monitor actual species biodiversity. Indonesia is home to approximately 850 identified species of marine sponges, and Raja Ampat archipelago of West Papua province is known for its exceptional marine biodiversity. Despite the species abundance, the exact number of sponges in the region is not well-documented due to the lack of specific studies providing comprehensive data on their diversity. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a DNA barcoding analysis using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene as a marker, combined with morphological analyses of 22 individuals collected in the waters of Waigeo, Mansuar, and Gam Islands in Raja Ampat. The results showed that 3 samples were identified at the species level (Halichondria sp. and Stylissa carteri) with good query cover and percent identity. This showed the possible presence of undescribed or cryptic species, suggesting a severe lack of reference data for both morphology and molecular analyses of marine sponges in the region. Consequently, the analysis showed the presence of a significant gap in the understanding of sponge biodiversity in Raja Ampat's waters.

Abstract

The condition of the nest greatly determines the success of turtle egg hatching. The success of turtle egg hatching, both naturally and artificially, is influenced by several factors such as the location of the nest, the depth of the nest, vegetation conditions, environmental temperature, humidity and the surrounding environment. This study aims to see the effect of shade on the length of the incubation period and the success of green turtle egg hatching in semi-natural nests. This study was conducted at Pangumbahan Nesting Beach, Sukabumi. This study used an experimental method with the treatment of semi-natural nests placed in exposed areas and shaded areas with different depths, namely 68 (control), 30, 50, 70 and 90 cm. Measurements and observations of environmental conditions were carried out during the incubation period. Observations of hatching of hatchlings began on the 55th day of incubation and the dismantling of the entire nest was carried out on the 68th day of incubation. The results showed that in exposed areas there was no significant difference given the level of treatment on the length of the incubation period, while in sheltered or protected areas there was at least one difference in the level of treatment that had a different effect on the length of the incubation period. The fastest incubation period in exposed areas was at a depth of 30 cm and in sheltered areas was at a depth of 90 cm. Key words: incubation period, the green turtle, the success of hatching.
