Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation strategies employed by Luna Casano in translating the song “Angels Like You” into Indonesian and to compare the resulting translation with those generated by ChatGPT using three different prompts. Utilizing Peter Newmark’s (1988) framework of translation strategies, the research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings reveal that Luna Casano predominantly uses Literal Translation and Free Translation (each accounting for 30% of the total), followed by Communicative Translation (25%), Faithful Translation (10%), and Idiomatic Translation (5%). Notably, Word-for-word, Semantic, and Adaptation strategies are absent from her translation. In contrast, the quality of ChatGPT’s translations is significantly influenced by the specificity of the prompts provided. Among the three prompts tested, Prompt 3—which instructs the AI to produce a poetic and singable version—yields the most comparable output to Luna Casano’s translation. This study concludes that while AI-based tools such as ChatGPT can generate accurate and stylistically appropriate translations when guided effectively, human involvement remains crucial in preserving the emotional depth, musicality, and aesthetic value inherent in song lyrics. It is recommended that future studies explore the application of similar translation strategies in other forms of artistic texts, such as poetry or drama, to further examine the evolving role of AI in literary and creative translation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and analyses the equivalence of meaning between English and Indonesian lyrics of three Maher Zain songs: "For the Rest of My Life," "I Love You So," and "Guide Me All the Way." In line with that, by applying Eugene Nida's theory of formal and dynamic equivalence and Peter Low's Pentathlon Principle as a reference in determining the extent to which the translation maintains the meaning, emotion, and musical beauty that are equivalent to the original version. The analysis was carried out on each line of the English and Indonesian lyrics with a qualitative approach, then a comparison was made referring to meaning, convention, naturalness of language, rhythm, and rhyme. The research findings show in detail that dynamic equivalence is the most dominant. This is because the translator emphasizes and focuses on conveying emotional and spiritual messages that are appropriate or suitable for the culture and sensitivity of Indonesian listeners. On the other hand, in simpler parts and those containing theological meaning, the use of formal equivalence aims to ensure clarity and accuracy. Furthermore, regarding the meaning, naturalness, and loudness of the song translation, it is considered successful based on the Pentathlon Principle analysis, although there are slight differences in rhythm and cadence caused by structural differences and language rules. Finally, the results of the data comparison in this study show that the translation of Maher Zain's songs has succeeded in balancing the equality of the original meaning and musical and cultural. In addition, especially the translation of religious songs requires linguistic accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and harmony.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of the Show and Tell (SAT) strategy in teaching vocabulary to the seventh-grade students of SMPN 3 Pujut. Vocabulary is one of the essential components in English learning, and many students still face difficulties in mastering it. Therefore, an appropriate strategy is needed to improve their vocabulary achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a significant difference in students’ vocabulary mastery between those taught using the Show and Tell strategy and those taught through conventional methods, as well as to find out whether the Show and Tell strategy was effective for teaching vocabulary. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design with a quantitative approach, using pre-test and post-test instruments. The sample consisted of 56 students divided into two groups: 28 students in the experimental class and 28 students in the control class. Data were collected through vocabulary tests and analyzed using SPSS version 25, including tests of normality, homogeneity, and an independent samples t-test. The results revealed that the experimental groups mean score increased from 61.07 in the pre-test to 89.10 in the post-test, while the control group’s mean rose from 63.92 to 84.28. The t-test value (t0 = 2.024; p = 0.048 < 0.05) indicated a significant difference between the two groups. These findings confirmed that the Show and Tell strategy was more effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery compared to the conventional strategy. In conclusion, the Show and Tell strategy significantly enhanced students’ vocabulary mastery and made the learning process more interactive, contextual, and engaging. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers implement this strategy in their classrooms to promote active participation, motivation, and better vocabulary retention among students.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using animation videos as a teaching medium to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at SMPN 16 Mataram. The study addressed the problem of low vocabulary achievement caused by conventional and less engaging teaching methods in English classrooms. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 32 eighth-grade students of class VIII C in the academic year 2024/2025. The instrument used was a validated vocabulary test comprising 20 items in the form of multiple-choice and matching questions. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test with the assistance of SPSS 25. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary scores, with the mean score increasing from 58.91 in the pre-test to 85.63 in the post-test. The significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. These findings indicate that animation videos provide an engaging learning experience and effectively enhance students’ vocabulary mastery at the junior high school level.

Abstract

This research examined the implementation of Project-based Learning (PjBL) in English classes at SMKN 1 Mataram. The study aimed to examine students’ engagement, autonomy, and attitudes during project activities, analyse the relationship between PjBL and constructivist learning in vocational education, and provide insights for teacher training, curriculum development, and classroom practices in Indonesian vocational schools. This study used a qualitative case study design involving one class, Class XII LPS 1 majoring Layanan Perbankan Syariah (Sharia Banking Service), consisting of 1 English teacher and 28 students selected through purposive sampling technique. The data collection was employed through observation checklists, document analysis, and field notes, with validated instruments to ensure credibility. The data analysis was conducted thematically to identify patterns in the implementation of PjBL. The findings showed that the implementation of PjBL varied across two observed meetings and remained incomplete. In the first meeting, the teacher only implemented the initial stage by introducing essential questions related to job interviews. Student participation was limited, and no further stages such as project planning or development were conducted. The teacher also shared a personal experience of being rejected for a job in Belgium because she wore a hijab to engage students in discussion. In the second meeting, the implementation improved as the teacher facilitated group work, introduced a project, and monitored students’ activities. However, important stages such as detailed planning, presentation, assessment, and reflection were still absent. Although some progress was evident, the implementation did not represent the complete cycle of PjBL and failed to fully support constructivist principles or student autonomy. The study concludes that comprehensive teacher training, structured planning, and the implementation of all PjBL stages are necessary to maximize its effectiveness in vocational English classrooms.

Abstract

Vocabulary instruction is a critical component of early English language education, significantly contributing to the long-term language development of young learners. However, effectively selecting and applying teaching strategies that align with students’ cognitive and affective needs poses notable challenges, particularly for teachers in madrasah ibtidaiyah (Islamic primary schools). These challenges are often compounded by factors such as limited parental involvement, overcrowded classrooms, scarce teaching resources, and constrained instructional time. This study investigates the vocabulary teaching strategies employed by English for Young Learners (EYL) madrasah teachers and the difficulties they encounter in their implementation. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were gathered through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with groups of madrasah teachers. The findings reveal that strategies such as “listen and repeat” and “question and answer” were widely adopted, while approaches like “demonstration,” “brainstorming,” “translation,” and “outdoor activities” were used selectively based on students’ grade levels. Teachers consistently reported various obstacles, including low student motivation, diverse proficiency levels, limited instructional materials, and insufficient time allocated for English instruction. These insights highlight the need for context-responsive pedagogical support and resource development to enhance vocabulary learning outcomes in Islamic primary school settings.
