Abstract

In recent decades, advances in artificial intelligence have driven digital transformation and led to the development of digital applications such as Google Lens. Google Lens utilizes smartphone cameras and machine learning technology to recognize objects and perform functions such as translation and scanning; however, its accuracy remains a subject of debate. Handwritten text presents particular challenges due to variations in writing styles, inconsistencies in letter formation, and contextual influences, all of which may lead to inaccuracies in image-to-text conversion and translation processes. This study aims to analyze the types and frequencies of errors in the results of image-to-text conversion and the translation of students' handwritten texts using Google Lens. A qualitative descriptive approach with document analysis was employed, focusing on 15 handwritten essays by English education students at the University of Mataram. The findings reveal that the most dominant type of error is character recognition errors (55% of conversion errors), followed by omitted text errors (27%) and word segmentation errors (18%). In addition, translation-stage errors were identified, including syntactic errors (75% of translation errors) and untranslated text (25%). These findings indicate that Google Lens still has limitations in recognizing and translating handwritten text. The accuracy of the results is strongly influenced by the clarity of the handwriting and the quality of the image. While this study identifies specific error patterns, it does not systematically compare Google Lens output with human translations using a standardized rubric; therefore, further research is needed to validate claims regarding superiority over human translation.

Abstract

Scholars and translators have a complicated and multi-faceted problem when attempting to translate the Quranic text, especially the opening lines of Surah Al-'Alaq (The Clot). With its foundation in the illustrious history of Islamic scholarship, this research delves into the methods used by three renowned translators, Marmaduke Pickthall, Yusuf Ali, and Mustafa Khattab, to bring these passages into English. This study explores the cultural, linguistic, and religious constraints involved in translating the Quran. It emphasizes the need of finding an equilibrium between literal and idiomatic translations, preserving the text's musicality and poetic qualities, and effectively conveying its profound spiritual and theological significance. The research examines the translators' strategies, drawing on theories of cultural and linguistic translation, to understand how they worked. These strategies included working with Islamic scholars, including multiple cultural viewpoints, and using explanatory notes. The results highlight the complex nature of translating the Quran and the constant attempts to improve translation methodologies via iterative review, technical developments, and multidisciplinary cooperation. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Quranic text while making sure it's accessible and relevant to people all over the world.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Lokakarya “Writing for Academic Publishing” bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan peserta dalam menulis untuk penerbitan akademik. Kegiatan ini diadakan dengan dukungan dari Regional English Language Office (RELO) dan Kedutaan Amerika, bekerja sama dengan Universitas Mataram (Unram), FKIP Unram, dan UPT Pusat Bahasa Unram. Tujuan utama dari lokakarya ini adalah memberikan wawasan dan keterampilan baru kepada peserta dalam strategi penulisan yang efektif, struktur tulisan akademik, serta teknik penyuntingan untuk meningkatkan kualitas tulisan mereka. Lokakarya ini juga bertujuan untuk memperluas pemahaman peserta tentang penulisan akademik melalui diskusi dan pertukaran ide dengan sesama penulis akademik. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan antusiasme peserta yang tinggi selama lokakarya dan peningkatan kemampuan menulis akademiknya untuk publikasi ilmiah. Mereka memperoleh pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang strategi penulisan yang efektif, struktur tulisan akademik yang benar, serta teknik penyuntingan yang dapat meningkatkan kualitas tulisan mereka. Selain itu, lokakarya ini memberikan kesempatan bagi peserta untuk berinteraksi dengan narasumber penutur asli dari Amerika yang berpengalaman, dengan sesama penulis akademik, dan dengan rekan sejawat dalam bidang pengajaran Bahasa Inggris. Secara keseluruhan, lokakarya “Writing for Academic Publishing” telah berhasil memberikan kontribusi yang berarti dalam pengembangan kemampuan menulis peserta dalam konteks penerbitan akademik. Dukungan dari RELO Kedutaan Amerika, Unram, dan FKIP sangat berarti dalam melaksanakan kegiatan ini. Harapan kami adalah bahwa peserta dapat terus mengaplikasikan pengetahuan dan keterampilan yang mereka peroleh dalam pengembangan karier dan penelitian akademik mereka di masa depan. ABSTRACT This community service entitled “Writing for Academic Publishing” workshop series aims to enhance participants' writing skills specifically for academic publications. This event was supported by the Regional English Language Office (RELO) and the U.S. Embassy, in collaboration with the University of Mataram (Unram), FKIP Unram, and the Language Center of Unram. The primary objective of this workshop was to provide participants with valuable insights and new techniques to effectively approach academic writing, including structuring their papers and applying editing methods to improve the overall quality of their work. Furthermore, the workshop seeks to expand participants' understanding of academic writing through engaging discussions and the exchange of ideas with fellow academic writers. The outcomes of this event reflect the participants' high enthusiasm and noticeable improvement in their academic writing skills, specifically geared towards scholarly publications. They have acquired a better grasp of effective writing strategies, appropriate academic writing structures, and editing techniques that can significantly enhance their written pieces. Additionally, the workshop offers participants the opportunity to interact with experienced native English speaker and educator, fellow academic writers, and peers involved in English language teaching. In general, the “Writing for Academic Publishing” workshop series have made a substantial contribution to the development of participants' writing abilities within the realm of academic publication. The unwavering support from RELO, the U.S. Embassy, Unram, and FKIP has been instrumental in successfully organizing this workshop. It is our sincere hope that participants will continue to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained to advance their careers and engage in further academic research endeavors in the future.

Abstract

Transformasi digital dalam dunia pendidikan menuntut peningkatan literasi digital, khususnya bagi peserta pelatihan di daerah dengan keterbatasan infrastruktur teknologi. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memberdayakan keterampilan digital peserta pelatihan LPKN Training Center Mataram melalui pelatihan intensif berbasis aplikasi Google Workspace dan teknologi kecerdasan buatan (ChatGPT). Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan Participatory Action Research (PAR), dengan tahapan meliputi identifikasi kebutuhan, penyusunan modul kontekstual, pelatihan interaktif, dan evaluasi hasil. Pelatihan dilaksanakan dalam empat sesi yang berfokus pada kemampuan teknis dan penerapannya dalam konteks akademik dan kepariwisataan. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan dalam keterampilan digital peserta pelatihan. Peserta juga menunjukkan peningkatan kepercayaan diri dan kesiapan dalam mengintegrasikan teknologi ke dalam proses pembelajaran dan kegiatan profesi. Kendala utama berupa keterbatasan perangkat dan akses internet diatasi melalui penggunaan materi offline dan pendampingan tambahan.

Abstract

Audio-visual translation (AVT) is an essential part of making films accessible across languages and cultures. However, there are few research on subtitling procedures in films with social and ideological complexity. This study aims at analyzing the types of translation strategies employed in the Indonesian subtitles of “Women Talking” (2022) based on Gottlieb’s classification of translation strategies (1992) as well as investigating the most frequently used translation strategies used in the Indonesian subtitles of the movie. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, a total of 300 of 1,318 subtitle units were purposively selected and analyzed using documentation and qualitative content analysis. The findings showed that 8 out of 10 Gottlieb’s translation strategies were identified that included Transfer, Paraphrase, Condensation, Imitation, Expansion, Deletion, Decimation, and Resignation strategies, while Transcription and Dislocation were absent. Transfer strategy is the most frequently used strategy with 160 occurrences (53.33%), followed by Paraphrase (50 occurrences, 16.67%), Condensation (30 occurrences, 10.00%), Imitation (17 occurences, 5.67%), Expansion (15 occurences, 5.00%), Deletion (15 occurences, 5.00%), Decimation (12 occurences, 4.00%), and Resignation (1 occurence, 0.33%). The prevalent use of Transfer strategy suggests the translator’s preference for retaining the original content via literal translation, but Paraphrase and Condensation were used to address linguistic and technical limits of subtitling. The results indicate that the translation of Indonesian subtitles of Women Talking put semantic correctness at the top of the priority list while still keeping the readability for Indonesian viewers.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of power and translation practices in multilingual outdoor signage on Gili Trawangan as an international tourist destination. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in Linguistic Landscape Studies and Postcolonial Translation Studies to analyze language use, translation strategies, and visual composition in multilingual signs. Data were collected in September 2025 through observation, documentation, recording, and data selection. A total of 35 permanent and semi-permanent public signs located on main roads, beachfront areas, restaurants, hotels, shops, and tourist information centers were analyzed using discourse analysis and a postcolonial translation approach. The analysis involved categorization of signs, visual and linguistic examination, and translation assessment. Validity was strengthened through data triangulation with field observation notes and contextual tourism information. The findings reveal a clear linguistic hierarchy within the tourism landscape of Gili Trawangan. Indonesian dominates institutional signage, while English strongly dominates commercial signs as symbolic capital aimed at attracting international tourists. Sasak, the local language, appears only minimally and functions largely as a symbolic cultural marker. The study also identifies literal translation patterns in regulatory signs and adaptive translation in commercial signage. In addition, visual composition reinforces the dominance of English through larger font sizes, strategic text placement, and stronger visual emphasis. This study concludes that multilingual signage functions not only as a medium of information, but also as a representation of power relations and the marginalization of local identity within the global tourism space.
