Abstract

Abstract The presence of ornaments can be seen on products, tables, chairs, ceilings, mirrors, floors, stairs, doors, windows, and others. The shapes and colors vary, ranging from embossed carvings, flat carvings, fauna and flora motifs. In the modern era, only a few people use traditional ornaments in their furniture, due to the transition from complicated ornaments to simpler/practical ones. This phenomenon has an impact on traditional ornaments that have special symbols and meanings that need to be preserved. As an effort to maintain original culture, the people of Madura, especially Sumenep, still preserve traditional ornaments at the Sumenep Palace. There is little research on the above, so this study analyzes the ornaments on one of the design products at the Sumenep Palace, namely meeting chairs. In the past, seats were a marker of power and caste in social strata. The chair of the Sumenep Palace is unique because it departs from the acculturation of Chinese and Madurese art and culture. This research was conducted with a descriptive research method. Descriptive data were collected from literature studies, field observations, and interviews; in the form of definitions, theories, ecological conditions, anthropology in the form of history and culture in the Sumenep Palace and the surrounding community. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that meeting chairs at the Sumenep Palace have two main ornaments, namely floral ornaments in the form of flowers and lunges; and fauna ornaments in the form of dragon snakes; each ornament contains a certain symbolic meaning, related to stratification and a symbol of personality. Chrysanthemum flower ornaments show honor, dignity, the majesty of the nobility; the dragon ornament has the meaning of firmness and will provide continuous luck.

Abstract

Sumedang is one of the regencies in West Java Province that usually experiences landslides due to its lithology, slopes, and water level conditions. Previously slow-moving landslides occurred between 2016 and February 2021, affected the new Cileunyi-Sumedang-Dawuan (Cisumdawu) Highway at Section 2, Station 21 in the North Sumedang District. This research aims to identify the causes of these landslides using a combination of geological field observation, subsurface geo-electric resistivity-based survey, and borehole drilling. A total of fourteen boreholes were drilled to collect geotechnical data from the subsurface of the researched area, including the soil material and N-SPT value. The soil hardness and resistivity were measured and compared to establish the relationship between resistivity and engineering properties. The result of the resistivity measurement showed that the percolating water zone in the permeable loose soil was located above the impermeable layer, estimated as a slip surface. The subsurface measurement and borehole data show that the lithology of the sliding surface is a layer of clay with a thickness of 5 - 12 m, the slope of the sliding surface is 20o, and the depth is between 24 - 26 m. The cover layer of the sliding surface is a layer of silty clay and gravelly clay with a thickness of 5 - 10 m. Thus, based on the data presented, installation of bore piles and groundwater level monitoring need to be done as mitigation efforts.

Abstract

Astana Sunan Gunung Jati is a royal burial complex and religious leadership site located in Cirebon, West Java-Indonesia, representing a unique model of acculturation and adaptation from diverse cultures and traditions. This research aims to examine a masterpiece of 14th-century architecture to understand the adaptation processes involved in its construction and uncover the aesthetic contributions from various sources to the design of Astana Sunan Gunung Jati. The primary challenge lies in harmoniously integrating diverse cultural elements and the influences of various religions that shape its design and aesthetics. This study focuses on the representation of different cultural elements interacting and contributing to the Islamic cultural richness in Cirebon, particularly in the visualization of the nine symbolic gates of Astana Sunan Gunung Jati. Employing a qualitative approach, the research delves into cultural adaptation into visual forms, utilizing historical data, literature, and in-depth interviews with relevant parties knowledgeable about Astana Sunan Gunung Jati. The findings reveal that the design of Astana Sunan Gunung Jati adopts a pluralistic and multicultural approach, blending models of 'native cultural preservation' and 'cultural contact synergy'. This reflects the cultural convergence from sources including Sundanese, Javanese, Islamic, Buddhist, and Hindu traditions, contributing to the visual richness of the structure. Moreover, this research significantly shapes the cultural identity of Cirebon. The cultural adaptation process in the design of Astana Sunan Gunung Jati, which has endured for approximately 700 years, holds profound insights into the aspects of maintenance, preservation, and conservation, serving as a role model for cultural heritage. It offers valuable insights into how cultural identity forms and is preserved in complex and diverse environments, particularly concerning design and aesthetics.

Abstract

Coffee culture in Indonesia has progressively evolved into an urban lifestyle nowadays. The rapid growth of coffee shops aligns with Indonesia’s position as one of the world’s top five coffee-producing nations. Coffee consumption has surged by up to 250% through years 2014-2021 (International Coffee Organization,2021) and coffeeshops grew from 1083 to 2937 shops in 2016-2019. Amidst the pressures of urban development, land scarcity and evolving needs of contemporary society concerns, a paradigm shift has emerged, suggesting that commercial functions like coffee shops could repurpose old buildings, including heritage ones, instead of constructing anew. The adaptation of these structures merely known as adaptive reuse approach. However, the awareness among users regarding the importance of sustainable development, particularly in environmental, social, cultural, and economic aspects, remains a question. Is this trend a transient phase or a lasting shift in consciousness? This article reviews theories related to adaptive reuse, the growth of coffee shops within heritage buildings, and user perceptions of adaptive reuse coffee shops, with case study in Bandung City. Employing literature review, field observations, and questionnaire distributed to 99 participants, this study aims to ascertain consumers’ understanding of adaptive reuse concepts and how it influences consumers reasons for visiting these coffee shops. In conclusion, this study contributes to understanding consumer awareness of adaptive reuse in coffee shops and how this approach impacts consumer motivation visit. It sheds light on the evolving landscape of sustainable urban development within the context of cultural heritage and consumption lifestyle trends.

Abstract

The phenomenon of deterritorialization in the context of palace interiors constitutes a significant aspect that reflects the dynamic shift in material cultural identity, as exemplified by the guest chair in the Prabayaksa Pavilion of the Kasepuhan Palace, Cirebon. This furniture object demonstrates a process of detachment from its original meaning as a representation of the European Veranda Chair style, followed by the formation of a new identity within the symbolic framework of the palace. Drawing on Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s theory of deterritorialization and reterritorialization, this study examines how furniture as a material object undergoes shifts in meaning and function within a local power space. While the architectural, cosmological, and territorial aspects of the palace have been widely studied, research on the interior—particularly furniture as a means of constructing visual and cultural identity—remains limited. Therefore, this research is urgent in addressing the gap within historical interior studies, especially furniture analysis grounded in contemporary theory. This study employs a qualitative approach, using the ethnomorphological method, which combines ethnographic observation with morphological analysis to explore the form, structure, colour, and material of the chair. The findings reveal that the guest chair underwent a process of deterritorialization from its European colonial identity and reterritorialization as a symbolic artefact embedded within the identity of the Kasepuhan Palace. Thus, the chair functions not only as an interior element but also as a medium of representation for royal power and cultural continuity within the sacred space of the palace.

Abstract

Currently, Indonesia relies on wheat imports to meet its domestic flour demand. In contrast, the country is rich in local agricultural resources, particularly coconuts. Substantial amounts of coconut dregs are discarded during the production of coconut milk and coconut oil, contributing to environmental pollution. This study explored the conversion of coconut dregs into flour using two processing methods: dry and wet. The dry method involved grating fresh coconut meat, roasting it at 80-100 °C, and pressing to extract the oil, producing coconut dregs as a byproduct. The wet method involved grating fresh coconut meat, mixing it with water, and filtering to make coconut milk, with the coconut dregs as a byproduct. Subsequently, the coconut dregs were dried by roasting (80-100 °C), then grinding and screening. Coconut dregs flour was subjected to proximate analysis to determine its water, ash, protein, fat, and carbohydrate content. In this study, a proximate analysis was conducted on wheat flour for comparison. Coconut dregs flour from the dry process contained 53.40% fat, 9.45% protein, and 32.62% carbohydrate. The wet process produced flour with a fat content of 36.47%, protein 0.36%, and carbohydrate 55.08%. The wheat flour contained 1.11-2.10% fat, 0.6-1.1% protein, and 84.28%-86.05% carbohydrate. Coconut dreg flour could be combined with other flours to create nutritious food options, thereby reducing reliance on wheat flour.
