Abstract

Adhesively wood-wood bonded joint has been widely used in structural applications, however because wood is a hygroscopic material that absorbed water from environment, hence the absorbed water affects the joints performance. The objective of the paper is to investigate water absorbtion and desorbtion behaviour and the combined effect of absorbed water into the wood before being bonded and adhesive curing temperature on the shear strength of teak wood joints. The initial water content in the wood was 0%, 37%, and 54%, while the curing temperature was a  room temperature for 24 hours, 50°C for 6 hours, and 100°C for 3 hours. The water absorbtion behaviour of teak wood deviate from the Fick's law, however the desorbtion tends to follow the Fick's law. Moreover the rate of absorbtion is higher than the rate of desorbtion. At the same curing temperature, the increase of water content decreases the shear strength of the joints; however the decrease was compensated by increasing the curing temperature. Curing at a high temperature (100 oC) improves the joints strength in all moisture content studied and the failure of the joints occurs at the wood.

Abstract

This paper presents the effect of volume fraction of rice husks on the mechanical properties of bamboo fiber/unsaturated polyester composites. The composite specimens were made from bamboo fiber with fixed volume fraction of 40% and rice husk particle as filler with volume fractions varied 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%. Matrix used was unsaturated polyester resin. Bamboo fibers and rice husk were surface treated using alkali solution 4% (by weight) for 2 hours. The manufacturing process of composite was using hand layup method. The specimens were tested in tension, bending and in impact loading. The results show that the addition of rice husk particles up to volume fraction of 20% does not result in a decrease of tensile strength, but after a volume fraction of 20%, the tensile strength tends to decrease. In bending test, the rice husk volume fraction up to 20% increase the bending strength, but after that then it tends to decrease. However the bending modulus seems unaffected by the volume fraction of rice husk. Similar to the bending modulus, the impact strength is not significantly affected by the volume fraction of rice husk.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the application of mocaf flour as a partial or complete substitute for wheat flour in the preparation of dadar gulung, a traditional Indonesian delicacy. The research is grounded in the potential of mocaf, which is gluten-free, rich in dietary fiber, and supports efforts to diversify food sources based on local commodities. A quantitative experimental method was employed with three flour formulations 50% wheat : 50% mocaf, 25% wheat : 75% mocaf, and 100% mocaf evaluated through organoleptic testing by 25 panelists with varying levels of experience. The assessment parameters included color, aroma, taste, texture, and overall perception. The findings indicate that the formulation containing 100% achieved the highest overall score, followed by the 75% mocaf and 25% wheat blend, while the 50% mocaf and 50% wheat formulation ranked lowest. These results suggest that a dominant proportion of mocaf can maintain the sensory quality of the product, although full substitution requires further optimization to enhance consumer acceptance. This research contributes to the development of healthier innovations in traditional foods, offers a gluten-free alternative for individuals with dietary restrictions, and promotes the sustainable utilization of local resources.

Abstract

Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are an essential part of mathematics learning; however, numerous studies have found that students' abilities in this area remain at a low to moderate level across various mathematical topics. This study aims to design and present worked examples that support mathematical communication skills, particularly in the context of measures of central tendency and data dispersion. This study employed a Research and Development approach, utilizing the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE). The participants consisted of five Year 8 students who had not yet studied the topic. Data were collected through open-ended interviews, paper-based tests, and expert validation sheets. The developed worked examples were validated by three experts based on content, construction, and linguistic criteria. The validation results indicated that the worked example met both face and logical validity criteria. The ADDIE cycle was completed after the Evaluation stage, during which the result of the limited trials showed that more than 80% students achieved the minimum score in solving the paired problem. These findings indicated that worked examples designed with self-explanation prompts and contextual variations can facilitate students' mathematical communication skills, especially in understanding and expressing mathematical ideas through multiple representations
