Abstract

Sponges are the most primitive multicellular animals that live in various types of waters from freshwater, brackish and sea. Sponges live in bottom waters that typically stick themselves on hard substrate such as rock or coral and compete with other tacks organism to obtain a food hall. The research was conducted in Kasiak Island Pariaman regency West Sumatera in February-March 2019, aims to find outthe type, density, frequency of occurrence, diversity index, dominance index, the distribution pattern of sponge, To support the research data is also observed the characteristics of the environment such as water quality. The method used is survey method, where sampling using belt transect method performed on three stations. The research found 14 genus / species of sponge consisting of 11 families in island waters Kasiak with sponge density values obtained in each research station ranges from 1458-4208 ind / ha. The highest frequency of occurrence of the type Jaspis sp. with the frequency of occurrence of 100%. Diversity index values ranged from 1.8921 to 1.9488, dominance index value obtained was from 0.3163 to 0.3396, and the value of the distribution pattern of the sponge ranges from 0.2941 to 0.3015.

Abstract

This research was carried out in January 2024 in the Pandan Island Conservation Area, Padang City, West Sumatra Province. The aim was to determine the condition and the extent of coral reef cover in this area. The method used in this research is a survey method with quantitative analysis using coral reef observation data. Data was collected at three stations using the UPT (Underwater Photo Transect) method, namely by diving using Scuba diving equipment and taking underwater photos using a digital camera. The percentage of coral reef cover at the three stations includes Station I (Pandan Island to the south), which has a coral cover of 67.60% categorized as good, and Station II (Pandan Island to the east), which has a cover of 69.07%, which is classified as good. Station III (Pandan Island to the north) has a cover of 63.04%, categorized as good. The types of growth of living coral reefs (life form) found at Station I are dominated by Coral Foliose (CF) at 44.13%, at Station II, it is dominated by Coral Foliose (CF) at 38.13%, and Coral Encrusting (CE) amounting to 14.73%. In comparison, Station III was dominated by Coral Encrusting (CE), amounting to 20.86%, and Coral Massive (CM), amounting to 15.90%. Based on the image classification results, it can be concluded that the area of ​​living coral reefs in the research area is 14.65 ha.

Abstract

This study analyzes live coral cover, megabenthos abundance, and the relationship between coral reef condition and megabenthos abundance in Pasumpahan Island waters. The survey method was used to collect primary and secondary data. The results showed that the average percentage of live coral reef cover in Pasumpahan Island, West Sumatra, was 33.31%. The abundance of megabenthos obtained was 10,000 ind/ha. Regression results showed a strong positive correlation between coral reef cover and megabenthos abundance, with an R2 value of 0.5396, meaning that the percentage of live coral affects megabenthos by 53.96%.

Abstract

The research was conducted in May 2023 in Setan Island, West Sumatra. The study aimed to map the distribution of coral reefs, test the accuracy of the resulting map, and determine the condition of coral reef cover on Setan Island. The methods used are remote sensing methods using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and field survey methods to validate the distribution of coral reefs resulting from image data processing (Groundcheck) and to observe the condition of coral reefs using the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method. Determination of sampling locations to ground check the distribution of coral reefs using a Stratified random sampling method while determining sampling locations for observations of coral reef cover using a purposive sampling method. The study results obtained a coral reef distribution map with a reef distribution area of 13.18 ha or 47.55% of the total shallow water area. The accuracy test found an accuracy value of 80% with a kappa coefficient 0.7, where the category is good and the level of trust is moderate. The condition of coral reef cover based on live corals in the waters of Setan Island is in the Fair and Poor categories. Percentages range from 0.33% to 31.36%. The dominating lifeform types are coral massive and coral submassive.

Abstract

Mangrove is a type of vegetation that grows on muddy soil in tidal areas, around the river estuary, and in tropical coastal areas. To support the success of mangrove forest management, it is important to pay attention to the factors that affect the growth of mangroves. This research was conducted in October – December 2021. The purpose of the study was to determine the type, density value, frequency, and cover of mangrove vegetation and its importance value index in Pongkar Village, Karimun Regency, Kepulauan Riau Province, using survey methods and sampling and measuring environmental quality parameters waters in the field. Based on the result of the research, the types of mangrove vegetation found consisted of 6 species, namely Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Sonneratia alba, and Lumnitzera littorea. The highest density of mangrove vegetation in the Pongkar Village area is near the Military District Command (Station II) housing with a total density of 1822.22 ind/ha. The highest relative frequency value of mangroves is found in the Pelambung area of ​​A.alba species with a value of 40%. The highest relative dominance value of mangroves was found at station II of S.alba species with a value of 63.12%. Meanwhile, the highest important value index was found at station II for S.alba species with a value of 152.01% and the lowest important value index was L.littorea which was found at station I with a value of 12.69%.

Abstract

Poncan Godang Island is included in the appropriate category based on the suitability of land for the Sibolga tourist area, with the presence of tourism activities that can also affect the amount of biodiversity in it. Considering the importance of coral reefs for biodiversity and sea urchins which also have a role in coral reef ecosystems, it is necessary to conduct research on the condition of sea urchins population and the percentage of coral reefs on Poncan Godang Island. Sea urchin and coral reef data were collected using the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method by monitoring directly on the transect line along 50 meters. The results obtained indicate that the population of sea urchins in the waters of Poncan Godang Island, North Sumatra can be described, that sea urchins do not affect the coral reef ecosystem because at stations 1 and 5 there is no sea urchin and the percentage of coral cover is classified as bad, but at station 3 there are 32 individuals with coral reef cover conditions, while at stations with The percentage of good coral cover is that at station 4 there are only 25 individuals, as well as at station 2 where the percentage of coral cover is higher than station 3 and there are no sea urchins.

Abstract

Kasiak Island is one of the islands located in the waters of Pariaman, West Sumatra, and located right in front of Pariaman City. Around the sea, the island is surrounded by coral reefs and is a protected area. In the aquatic area of Kasiak Island has never been conducted research on the relationship of coral reef cover to the coral Pomacentridae and phytoplankton. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on this matter in the waters of Kasiak Island, West Sumatra Province. Data collection of coral reef cover is done by the LIT (Line Intercept transect) method with a transect length of 50 meters at a depth of 5 meters using scuba equipment. Coral fish observation is done by UVC (Underwater Visual Census) method with a transect length of 50 meters and an observation area of 2.5 meters left and right at a depth of 5 meters. Phytoplankton sampling is conducted during the day at 11.00 to 15.00 WIB at five points of the station with a depth of 5 meters using Vandorn water sampler volume 2 L with a total take of 100 L, then filtered using Plankton net no 25 and inserted into a sample bottle of 125 ml, then preserved using Lugol 4% as much as 4-6 drops, after which analyzed in the laboratory. Based on the results there is a very strong relationship between coral cover to the abundance of coral fish, where coral cover contributes to the abundance of coral fish by 93.87%, which means that the higher the percentage of coral cover the more species and abundance of coral fish are found. Then the a strong relationship between coral reef cover and phytoplankton abundance, where coral reef cover contributes to the abundance of phytoplankton by 56.37%, which means an increase in the percentage of coral reef cover along with the increasing abundance of phytoplankton.

Abstract

Coral reefs are one of the ecosystems that have ecological functions for marine life, one of which is reef fish. Coral fish are marine biota that live in association with coral reefs. This study aims to determine the abundance of reef fish, the condition of coral reefs and the relationship between abundance of reef fish and coral reefs. This research was conducted in June 2019 in the waters of Tikus Island, Bengkulu City. The method used is a survey method. Data collection on reef fish was carried out using the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method and coral reefs condition data colletion is done using the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method. The abundance of reef fish found at the study site averages in the abundant category. At station I, an abundance of reef fish was 2,18 ind/m2, at station II it was 4,18 ind/m2, and at station III it was 1,27 ind/m2. While the average condition of coral reefs at the study site is include in the medium category. At station I, the percentage of live coral cover was 39,30% or include in the medium category. At station II, the percentage of live coral cover was 50,94% or include in the good category. And at station III, the percentage of live coral cover was 46,32% or include in the medium category. Coral fish and coral reefs have a fairly close relationship. Reef fish use coral reefs as a place to find food, shelter and spawn or breed.

Abstract

This study was conducted from May to June 2022 to know the species, abundance, diversity, and distribution patterns in the tidal areas of Anak Setatah Village. As supporting data in this study, several environmental parameters were also measured, including water quality, sediment type, and sediment organic matter content. The study method was a survey method, where sampling used the quadrat transect method. The results found that there were three species of bivalves. Where the abundance among stations ranged from 0.49 to 0.74 and/m2. The value of the species diversity index ranged from 0.91 to 1.41, which was classified as moderate, and the matter of the distribution pattern ranged from 6.28 to 9.71 with a clumped distribution pattern.

Abstract

This study aims to determine differences in zooxanthella density based on the life forms of coral Acropora Branching, Submassive Acropora, Branching, Foliose, Heliopora and comparing zooxanthella densities between the forms of coral form. This study was conducted in January-February 2020 on Marak Island, Nagari Sungai Pinang, West Sumatera Province. Zooxanthella density was calculated at the Marine Biology Laboratory, Department of Marine Sciences, University of Riau. The survey methode was used in this study, where the data collected was primary data. Coral Sampling was done by free collection using the SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus). The result of study in the waters of Marak Island, West Sumatera on Acropora Branching corals were in the range of 0.004-0.13×106 cells/cm2. Acropora Submassive range of 2.95- 3.56×106 cells/cm2. Branching range of 2.41-2.59×106 cells/cm2. Foliose range of 0.44-1.09×106 cell/cm2. Heliopora range of 1.30-1.59×106 cell/cm2. The highest zooxanthella density was in Submassive Acropora and the lowest in Acropora Branching corals due to different forms of growth and temperature influences. Different forms of coral growth affect the zooxanthella density on a coral and the success of coral growth depends on the zooxanthella density and the size of the corallite of each coral life form.
