Abstract

The development of learning social network applications or features makes it possible to develop collaborative activities, making it easier for individuals in groups to communicate. NCL combines technology where social media and web technology are used to support relationships between learners, learning resources and learning communities. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of NCL on concept understanding. The method used was descriptive quantitative approach with quasi experimental design. The sampling technique used purposive sampling with a total sample of 158 PGSD students at Tadulako University. Data collection techniques through tests in the form of pre-test and post-test statements of learning outcomes of concept understanding. The results of hypothesis testing showed that there was no significant difference in learning outcomes of concept understanding between the group taught with the networked collaborative learning strategy and the group that learned with discussion. The results of this study found that NCL applied did not affect the concept understanding of learners. Thus, NCL has not been proven to be more effective than conventional in the context of concept learning in this study

Abstract

Low student learning engagement in interdisciplinary Science and Social Studies Learning (Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial/IPAS) instruction remains a persistent challenge in Indonesian elementary education, particularly under the Merdeka Curriculum framework that demands active, student-centered participation. This study examined the effect of the Talking Stick learning model assisted by Question Box media on student learning engagement among 16 fifth-grade students at SDN Tindaki, Parigi Moutong Regency. A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a One Group Pretest-Posttest approach was employed. Data were collected using a learning engagement questionnaire and an observation sheet, measuring four behavioral indicators: enthusiasm for participation, willingness to ask questions, courage to answer, and confidence in presenting understanding. Instrument validity was confirmed through Pearson Product Moment correlation, and reliability through Cronbach's Alpha. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a Paired Sample t-test via SPSS version 30. The results showed a significant increase in mean engagement scores from 58.44 (pretest) to 62.00 (posttest), with a Paired Sample t-test yielding p = 0.003 (p < 0.05). All four behavioral indicators improved, with the greatest gains recorded for enthusiasm for participation (+7.8%) and courage to present understanding (+7.5%). These findings confirm that the Talking Stick–Question Box combination is an effective, accessible strategy for fostering behavioral engagement in elementary IPAS learning and warrants broader adoption within the Merdeka Curriculum context.

Abstract

General Background: Mathematics learning in elementary schools often involves abstract concepts that are difficult for students to understand, requiring appropriate instructional media to support conceptual clarity. Specific Background: Fourth-grade students at SD Inpres Perumnas demonstrated low mathematics learning outcomes due to conventional teaching methods and limited use of interactive media. Knowledge Gap: Previous studies have not specifically examined the use of flashcard learning media in the context of Grade IV students at SD Inpres Perumnas, particularly for semi-abstract mathematical content such as geometric shapes. Aims: This study aims to determine the role of flashcard learning media in improving students’ mathematics learning outcomes. Results: Using a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach involving 28 students, the findings show a substantial increase in mean scores from 38.21 to 86.78, supported by paired sample t-test results with significance <0.001, indicating a statistically significant improvement. Novelty: The study provides empirical evidence within a specific local context and grade level, focusing on visual-concrete learning media for more complex elementary mathematics topics. Implications: Flashcard media can serve as an alternative instructional strategy to facilitate visual understanding, increase student engagement, and support improved learning outcomes in elementary mathematics education. Highlights• Significant score increase observed between pretest and posttest results• Visual-concrete media supports clearer understanding of geometric concepts• Student engagement during learning activities becomes more active and participatory KeywordsFlashcard Learning Media; Mathematics Learning Outcomes; Elementary Education; Visual Learning; Quasi Experimental Design
