Abstract

The research was conducted to determine student learning achievement before the pandemic using face-to-face learning and after pandemic using E-learning. The research was conducted at SMPN 13 Tangerang. In the research, the researcher used a qualitative approach. The researcher took the sample of this study were 10 students of class VIII and 2 English teachers. The instrument in the study was a questionnaire given to students, then observations and interviews with students and teachers. Based on the results of interviews with class VIII students and teachers, it was found that students are more comfortable, and more able to understand and follow the lesson by using the face to face learning model because students can meet face to face, discuss the material given or ask the teacher directly if there is something they haven't. understanding of English material. Likewise, teachers in making materials, managing classes, evaluating students more easily during face-to-face learning. This research proves that student learning achievement is maximized and run well using the face-to-face learning model.Keywords: Learning achievement, Before and during pandemic

Abstract

This paper investigated the metacognition of final semester students in completing their mini-thesis. The obstacles faced by English study program students in writing mini-thesis were assumed resulted from their lack of metacognition implementation. Metacognition is often described as knowledge and control over one’s cognitive processes. This research used mixed-method design. The instruments used were observation, interviews, and questionnaire. The subjects of this research consisted of 18 students of 8th, 9th as well as graduated students and 10 lecturers of English Study program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang. This study showed: firstly, students are quite hard to complete mini-thesis due to their strategy following the schedule is need to be pushed by their advisors. Secondly, most respondents have good metacognitive awareness, while few of eighth and ninth semester students need to improve planning, information management strategy and monitoring. Thirdly, metacognition can be the effective solution to encourage students in achieving their target.

Abstract

Arranging online teaching materials is a necessity in the current digital era, especially for educators/teachers. Teaching materials are one of the learning tools that can become a reference for a teacher as an effort to provide information and knowledge in a structured teaching strategy. This paper aims to provide an explanation regarding the implementation of community service carried out by MTS teachers in Tangerang in the context of preparing online teaching materials through an online application. There are 45 participants who involved in this program to arrange online teaching materials, from those participants only 1 person is succeed and the others found it difficult to complete it, because they were also busy. This shows that the implementation of teaching materials for a teacher is still low.

Abstract

Many studies have shown a gradually changed in teaching strategy from conventional to digital classrooms. However, little is about multimedia-aided teaching (MAT) enactment in teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) for Sharia Business Law students in understanding Sharia Business Law terms. This study aims to investigate the use of MAT to improve student's understanding of Sharia Business Law terms. This case study involved 48 students who took an English for Business Law course in the fifth semester at a university in East Java, Indonesia. Data were garnered through observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, while the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that the students were more enthusiastic about learning ESP by using MAT, and the learning materials and visualization of multimedia (PPT and picture) are interesting. In addition, MAT is effective for teaching ESP in Sharia Business Law courses. This study implies how MAT is used to help the students improve their understanding of the terms of Sharia Business Law.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is an essential component of language learning, particularly for non-native English speakers. Films, one of the most popular multimedia formats among Generation Z, to help their listening abilities. This study aims to identify Generation Z by using the movie Fast n Furious: Fast X in listening skills and find out the factors that influence Generation Z's perceptions of using the movie Fast n Furious: Fast X in learning English to listening. This research uses qualitative approach with some instruments of the research such as; interviews, observation, listening tests, and documentation. For the sample taken by the researcher, there were 15 respondents, and the basis taken in choosing the sample was Generation Z whose age range was from 16-25 years. For the number of interviews the researcher gave, there were 10 questions. In addition, in collecting this data, researchers conducted observations for 2 weeks. The results of the research on movie usage show that, for Generation Z, watching Fast & Furious: Fast X is essential for improving listening skills as it can help children's character development. In addition, the movie can support students' understanding of different languages and contextual learning approaches. How Generation Z considers using Fast & Furious: Fast X to learn English through listening is revealed by the research findings on the perceptual element with the movie. Almost 100% of the participants said that the movie provided more scenarios and imaginative ways to learn the language while acquiring English. Watching the movie can help viewers become more proficient listeners as some of the jargon used in the dialog is straightforward and every day. Keywords: Perception, Generation’s Z, Film, Fast n Furious: Fast X, Listening Comprehension

Abstract

This research analyzes idiomatic expressions in the voice lines of heroes in the video game Dota 2, using Charles Hockett's theory. This research highlights the potential of video games as an effective tool for language learning, offering native English speakers an authentic context to understand and internalize idiomatic expressions. Through qualitative analysis, 50 idiomatic expressions were identified and classified into six categories: Substitutes, Proper Names, Abbreviations, English Phrase Compounds, Allusions, and Slang. Specifically, Substitutes accounted for 8 idioms, Proper Names for 12 idioms, English Phrasal Compounds for 7 idioms, Figures of Speech for 14 idioms, and Slang for 9 idioms, with no examples of Abbreviations. Each idiom's contextual meaning is analyzed, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of their function in the game. The insights gained create an equivalence between digital games and language education, providing valuable implications for gamers and educators or learners in utilising video games for language development.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the cognitive processes involved in reading text english and examine the factors influencing high school students’ reading strategies at Suntisart School Thailand.  A qualitative research approach was employed, involving semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and a review of students' reading activities. The study focused on senior high school students, observing their performance in decoding, fluency, and comprehension tasks during reading sessions. Interviews were conducted to uncover the students' thinking patterns and strategies for tackling reading challenges text english.  The data collected from the interviews and classroom observations were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman framework, which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results found that more proficient readers applied strategies such as summarizing, making inferences, and reflecting on the text, which contributed to their understanding and retention of information. Additionally, students who struggled with reading often relied on external support from teachers or peers to manage their cognitive processes. The study concludes that students' ability to regulate their cognitive strategies plays a crucial role in their reading success and suggests that a combination of self-regulation and external guidance is essential for improving reading skills.

Abstract

Cross-study is an important activity to improve the quality of education and infrastructure in educational institutions with the aim of adding insight and knowledge that will be applied in the future to be better. it also provides an opportunity for students to experience different atmospheres and learning methods, as well as for students to have the passion and enthusiasm in gaining quality learning ways, especially in English, and create new relationships between students of muhamadiyah university. This study is aimed to explore student’s perceptions of cross-language study in educational contexts. The methode of this research is qualitative descriptive By involving 42 students as respondents, the data collection through a survey and interview which included several questions related to the benefits of cross-language study. The research results show that 98% of the majority respondents have a very positive perception of the benefits of cross-language studies as the representation of social interaction in digital age. They consider cross-language study have a significant impact on their personal and students language improvements, such as listening, and speaking, as well as broadening their understanding of linguistics and cultural diversity. These results demonstrate the importance of cross- language education in increasing understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as preparing students for future global challenges.

Abstract

This research was conducted as a form of investigation to see the pragmatic force on instagram captions containing information about tourism object in Bangkalan, Madura. This research using a qualitative descriptive as an effort to see the pragmatic force of instagram captions based on 3 indicators, attracting attention, the using of language on instagram caption, and increasing desire to visit tourism object. The data in this research found on instagram @adindarigama and @alfisuma. This research uses a questionnaire as a data collection tool. There are 100 respondents in this study. The theoretical approach used in this research is a sociopragmatic approach to see respondents’ perceptions regarding the pragmatic force of instagram captions which are used as the object of study. The results of the research show that (1) on pragmatic force with variable “attracting attention”, an average of 77, 75% agree that information on IG caption attracted attention; (2) on pragmatic power with the variable “use of language on IG captions”, an average of 72% agreed that the language content on IG captions was good; (3) on pragmatic force with the indicator “growing desire”, an average of 73, 3% agreed that the language on IG captions could increase the desire to visit tourism object in Bangkalan. The implication of this research is that the use of clear, concise, concise, interesting, and informative speech on instagram captions can be used as reference for providing information and education related to tourism in Bangkalan, Madura.

Abstract

Peningkatan kesadaran riset di kalangan dosen dan praktisi merupakan langkah strategis dalam pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan oleh Forum Silaturahmi Doktor Indonesia (FORSILADI) Jawa Barat melalui program Coaching Clinics. Program ini bertujuan untuk memberikan bimbingan intensif kepada dosen dan praktisi dalam meningkatkan keterampilan penelitian dan publikasi ilmiah. Melalui serangkaian workshop, diskusi kelompok, dan sesi mentoring, peserta diajak untuk mengeksplorasi metodologi penelitian yang efektif, teknik penulisan artikel ilmiah, serta strategi untuk mendapatkan pendanaan riset. Hasil dari program ini menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam pemahaman peserta mengenai pentingnya riset dan publikasi, serta kemampuan mereka dalam merancang dan melaksanakan penelitian yang relevan. Selain itu, Coaching Clinics juga berhasil membangun jaringan kolaborasi antara dosen dan praktisi, yang berpotensi menghasilkan penelitian yang lebih aplikatif dan berdampak. Implikasi dari kegiatan ini tidak hanya berkontribusi pada pengembangan individu, tetapi juga pada kemajuan ilmu pengetahuan secara keseluruhan, yang pada gilirannya dapat memberikan manfaat bagi masyarakat. Dengan demikian, program ini menjadi model yang efektif dalam mendorong budaya riset yang lebih kuat di lingkungan akademik dan profesional, serta memperkuat peran FORSILADI dalam meningkatkan kualitas penelitian di Jawa Barat.
