Abstract

Thermochemistry is a challenging topic in chemistry learning due to students difficulty in grasping its concepts, often stemming from a lack of critical thinking skills (CTS). This study investigates the impact of using argument-driven inquiry (ADI) learning with a science, environment, technology, and society (SETS) approach on the critical thinking skills of high school students studying thermochemistry. This research, employing a quasi-experimental design with a pretest and posttest control group, involved 46 students divided into a control and experimental group. The control group received ADI learning, while the experimental group received ADI learning with the SETS approach. The instrument used in this research is a CTS test on thermochemitry. It contains five valid questions and has a reliability score of 0.708. The analysis was performed using the Independent t-Test. The CTS test results revealed a significant difference between the groups with the experimental group (15.91) scoring higher than the control group (12.78). This suggest that incorporating the SETS approach into ADI learning can enhace students CTS

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Empowered through Edupreneur program at SMA Negeri 3 Sidoarjo, designed to address entrepreneurial development challenges among high school students in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. The research identified key barriers, including untapped entrepreneurial potential, underdeveloped student ventures, the lack of school-facilitated entrepreneurship programs, and the absence of designated entrepreneurship areas. Through a systematic approach involving entrepreneurship socialization, personal mentoring, community formation, and venue provision, the program was implemented in two phases: a Community Service Workshop with 100 twelfth-grade students and a Business Activity Monitoring program with 15 student business groups. The methodology employed observations, interviews, hands-on workshops, and continuous mentoring to foster entrepreneurial skills and knowledge. Results demonstrated significant success with the formation of 10 initial student business groups, which expanded to 15 active ventures across various sectors including snacks, handicrafts, and digital services. Students showed improved understanding of basic business concepts, cash flow management, and profit–loss calculations. The word cloud analysis of students’ perceptions regarding entrepreneurship needs and challenges shows that they have adequate knowledge of the field. However, challenges remain in digital promotion capabilities, time management, and product innovation. The program’s effectiveness was evidenced by increased entrepreneurial enthusiasm, the development of locally inspired business ideas, and enhanced student confidence in business planning. The study concludes that targeted entrepreneurship education, combined with continuous mentoring and institutional support, can effectively nurture young entrepreneurs. It recommends sustained collaboration between educational institutions, universities, and local businesses to transform student initiatives into sustainable enterprises that contribute to regional economic development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze research trends, variations in the application of syntax, as well as the effectiveness and limitations of Case-Based Learning (CBL) in chemistry education. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Of the 30 articles selected, 17 met the criteria and were analyzed further. The articles analyzed were published in the period 2010–2025. The reviewed articles show that the implementation of CBL has developed since 2010, with the highest number of publications in Turkey and samples predominantly at the university level. The topics covered vary, including reaction rates, solution equilibrium, acids and bases, and green chemistry. The commonly used syntax includes case orientation, analysis and discussion, literature review, presentation of results, and concept clarification. In general, CBL has been proven to improve cognitive aspects (concept understanding, achievement, retention) and process aspects (motivation, attitude, and critical thinking skills). However, CBL also has limitations, such as small sample sizes, lack of integration of modern chemistry topics, limited implementation at the high school level, and the time consuming nature of its application.

Abstract

Chemistry learning difficulties among senior high school students often arise due to the abstract and hierarchical nature of chemical concepts, which require strong reasoning and problem-solving skills. These difficulties are closely related to students’ thinking processes when understanding concepts and solving problems. This study aims to analyze patterns of students’ thinking processes that contribute to learning difficulties, identify the stages where obstacles most frequently occur, and summarize recommended instructional strategies. This research used a descriptive qualitative literature review of 20 selected journal articles. The findings show that students’ thinking processes are generally unsystematic, as they tend to apply formulas without sufficient conceptual understanding. The most dominant obstacles occur at the conceptual and mathematical stages, followed by procedural and representational difficulties. Recommended strategies include diagnostic assessments, strengthening prerequisite concepts, contextual learning, and integration of multiple chemical representations.

Abstract

Chemistry education involves complex representations often hindering scientific argumentation. This study compares the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Guided Inquiry (GI) integrated with ChemicalAI in enhancing students scientific argumentation skills on reaction rates. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design. Data were analyzed using the Rasch Model for instrument validation and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) for hypothesis testing. Rasch analysis confirmed the high reliability of the instrument while identifying reasoning as the most challenging component for the students. Based on the research findings, it was found that students who participated in the PBL method performend significantly better than students who participated in the GI method. This demonstrates superior performance in formulating claim, evidence and reasoning. Furthermore, the integration of Chemical-AI into PBL effectively facilitates the development of complex scientific arguments based on experimental data.

Abstract

This study aims to identify students’ strategies in solving algorithmic stoichiometry problems using a qualitative Grounded Theory approach. A total of 25 twelfth-grade students were given algorithmic stoichiometry problems involving concepts such as mole, molar mass, limiting reactant, and mass–mole–volume relationships. Based on the analysis of students’ written responses, 15 students representing various problem-solving strategies were selected for in-depth semi-structured interviews to explore their thinking patterns and the difficulties they encountered. The data analysis was conducted through open coding, axial coding, selective coding, and the constant comparative method until theoretical saturation was reached. Based on the analysis of written responses and in-depth interviews, a theory concerning students’ levels of understanding and strategies for solving algorithmic stoichiometry problems was generated. This theory explains three main aspects: students’ understanding of stoichiometry, which develops through several levels; problem-solving strategies that are influenced by the depth of understanding at each level; and common inhibiting factors, such as students’ lack of comprehensive understanding of fundamental stoichiometric concepts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the level of scientific argumentation skills among biology students using Toulmin’s Argument Pattern (TAP) framework. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method using essay questions designed to elicit key components of scientific argumentation. The participants consisted of 82 undergraduate students enrolled in a Genetics course during the even semester of the 2025 academic year. Data were collected through an essay test developed based on Genetics-related topics. Data analysis focused on the presence of TAP components and the classification of students’ levels of scientific argumentation. The results reveal that students’ scientific argumentation skills remain low, with 47.56% of students categorized at Level 1 and 30.5% at Level 2. Analysis of TAP component distribution indicates that 91.46% of students were able to state claims; however, these claims were predominantly unsupported by warrants or reasoning that meaningfully connected the evidence to the conclusions. The low levels of scientific argumentation observed reflect limitations in students’ critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills. Therefore, the implementation of instructional models such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Project-Based Learning (PjBL), and TAP-guided formative assessment strategies is recommended to enhance students’ scientific argumentation abilities.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship is increasingly recognized as an essential skill for students to face global economic and social challenges. However, research on entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) among high school students in Indonesia remains limited, despite its crucial role in shaping entrepreneurial intentions and readiness. This study aims to explore students’ levels of ESE and analyze the influence of gender and entrepreneurial experience on their abilities and intentions. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys measuring knowledge, interest, experience, and ESE. The findings reveal that students have high levels of entrepreneurial knowledge and interest, with ESE ranging from moderate to high. Gender was found to influence knowledge, interest, and ESE, with female students tending to demonstrate stronger entrepreneurial intentions. Moreover, prior entrepreneurial experience was shown to enhance both ESE and students’ interest in entrepreneurship. Qualitative analysis highlighted that students perceive capital, marketing, and product development as key needs for entrepreneurship, while common challenges include competition and financial constraints. Overall, students expressed neutral to positive sentiments toward entrepreneurial engagement. These findings underscore the importance of practical, gender-sensitive, and experiential entrepreneurship education to strengthen ESE and better prepare students for the challenges of the business world.
