Abstract

The ability of geometry is an aspect that underlies students to solve geometry problems. Several studies have stated students' difficulties in learning geometry. There are five levels of expansion of Van Hiele's theory, namely level 0, level 0.5, level 1, level 1.5, and level 2 which are used to measure the geometry abilities of junior high school students. Students' low geometry skills can be improved through scaffolding, so an appropriate scaffolding design is needed. This study aims to describe the appropriate scaffolding design based on the geometry ability test of junior high school students in terms of the expansion of Van Hiele's theory. The research subjects in this study consisted of 3 students of class VIII of SMP Negeri 8 Malang divided into 3 different levels of geometry ability, namely level 0, 0.5, and 1. Data collection methods consisted of written tests and interviews. The results showed that students at level 1 needed scaffolding to be able to connect the properties between quadrilateral shapes. Students at level 0.5 require scaffolding in the form of conceptual understanding of prerequisite materials. While students at level 0 need scaffolding to minimize the prototype phenomenon.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the response of student teacher candidates to learning using the Gallery Walk method on linear program material. The method used is to apply the Gallery Walk model in the VC class of Malang State University, amounting to 29 participants in one meeting, and collecting the participants' opinions with a response sheet that will be filled out by participating students. The results show that the participants are interested in using the Gallery Walk model but they feel that the use of the Gallery Walk model does not help participants to remember the material for a long period of time.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine: (1) which one is more effective between Computational Thinking BasedLearning (CTBL) and Problem Based Learning (PBL) on learning achievement, (2) which one is better, students with left brain dominance or students with right brain dominance, (3) for each brain dominance, which one is better between CTBL and PBL. This study used a quasi-experimental research method witha 2x2 factorial design. The population in this study were all students of class VIII SMPN 1 Bendo in theAcademic Year 2020/2021, totaling 9 classes. The research sample included 45 students (two classes) whowere taken using cluster random sampling. The instrument used was a questionnaire on the students’ braindominance and a mathematics learning outcome test. From the results of this analysis, it can be concludedthat CTBL was more effective to implement compared to PBL in odd semester class eight students at SMP1 Bendo Magetan in the Academic Year 2020/2021. There were differences in the results of mathematicslearning achievement in students who were given CTBL and PBL in terms of the brain dominance of oddsemester class eight students at SMPN 1 Bendo Magetan in the Academic Year 2020/2021.

Abstract

The lecture on algebra has not involved students in working together. Thus, one effort that can be done is implementing the jigsaw cooperative learning model. This study aims to describe the student collaboration activities in the introduction to algebra course using the jigsaw cooperative learning. This research is a quantitative descriptive study. The subjects were 32 first semester students of 2019 who were enrolled in the introduction to algebra course in the Mathematics Education Study Program, FMIPA, Universitas Negeri Malang. The instrument in this study was an observation sheet of student activities, and the supporting data were the results of individual exercises. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that student collaboration activities in the jigsaw cooperative learning in the introduction to algebra course were very good, as indicated by the average score of students in completing individual exercise problems was 90. Thus, it can be concluded that the selection of an appropriate learning model can enhance student collaboration in learning abstract mathematical concepts.

Abstract

Creative thinking is a very important aspect in learning, with creative thinking students can develop their abilities in every material being taught. This study aims to describe students' creative thinking skills in learning by using an ethnomathematical-based inquiry model. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were 10 students of class XI MIA MA Al Mukhtar Adipala Cilacap. The results of this study indicate that at the first meeting the average creative thinking level of students in the three groups was 85% (high), at the second and third meetings the average creative thinking level of students was 83% (high). At the fourth meeting, the average creative thinking level of students reached 85% (high).

Abstract

The research is developmental research aimed to produce interactive media based on guided discovery learning on translation for XI grade students. Media is in form of web-pages which embed flash file and Geogebra applet in presenting material. The research uses model of multimedia development by Alessi and Trollip. Validation test’s result shows that media is valid with score of 76,25%. In other hand, product trial to students and pupil shows that media is practicable with score of 84,46%. Hence, media developed satisfies quality aspect namely valid and practicable. Research also shows that media can facilitate as well as motivate students’ learning. The use of media especially by ulitizing mathematical software with discovery learning method is highly suggested to be applied in mathematics instruction.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy is the ability of students to carry out activities formulate, apply, and interpret & evaluate mathematics in various contexts. This study aims to analyze the needs of student worksheet development which can stimulate students' mathematical literacy. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study involving 15 students of class XI MIPA and 2 mathematics teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Gresik. This needs analysis includes material analysis, curriculum analysis, and student analysis. The results showed that one of the difficult mathematics materials for class XI MIPA was linear program, mathematics learning was carried out according to the 2013 Curriculum with the application of Blended Learning in the new normal era, and students still had difficulty solving problems on indicators of interpreting & evaluating mathematical process abilities. Therefore, Student Worksheet based Blended Learning will be developed which is more focused on activities that prioritize the interpretation and analysis of problem solving results according to the limitations and context of the problem in the Linear Program material.

Abstract

The research aims at exploring the characteristics of ‘don’t need’ boundaries of students in solving arithmagon problems using qualitative descriptive approach. The participants win this research are 23 eight-grader junior high school students. The research used the instruments including test questions and unstructured interviews. The data collection procedure began with giving test questions to 23 participants. All of them could make mathematical diagrams/drawings/model precisely according to the information presented from the problem. The student who used effective and clear sentences in solving problems though could not solve the problem in a structured manner is called as Subject 1 (S1).  The student who did not use effective and clear structured sentences is called as Subject 2 (S2). The student who used effective and clear sentences as well as structured in solving problems is called Subject 3 (S3).  This research used triangulation method by exploring data obtained from the test and interview results. According to the research result, it is concluded that S1 crossed the first ‘don’t need’ boundaries when solving the addition and multiplication arithmagon problems. S2 crossed the first and second “don’t need” boundaries when solving addition arithmagon problem and only crossed the first ‘don’t need’ boundaries in solving multiplication arithmagon problems. However, S3 crossed the second ‘don’t need’ boundaries in solving arithmagon problem of addition and multiplication. Through this research, it is hoped that further research will be able to find and explore the third ‘don’t need’ boundaries in solving mathematical problems.

Abstract

This paper presents the findings from a posttest experiment control group design by using reciprocal teaching, conducted in Indonesia University of Education to investigate students' ability in mathematical communication and self regulated learning.  The subject of the study were 254 of 9th grade students from three junior high schools of the high, medium, and low level in Bojonegoro, East Java.  The instruments of the study were an essay mathematical communication test, and a self-regulated learning scale. The study found that reciprocal teaching took the best role among school cluster and students' prior mathematics ability on students' mathematical communication ability and self-regulated learning as well.  The other finding was there was an interaction between school cluster and teaching approaches, but was no interaction between students' prior mathematics ability and teaching approaches on mathematical communication ability and self-regulated learning. Moreover, there was an association between mathematical communication and self regulated learning.
