Abstract

This research aims to investigate the performance of certified teachers using multisource feedback through multivariate data analysis. The researchers distributed an online 5-point Likert scale questionnaire. A total of sixty-one public elementary schools consented to participate in this study, with each school being represented by its principal, a group of teachers, and a cohort of students. The researchers conveniently chose a group of fellow teachers and students to avoid the school principals intervention. This study showed the covariance among school principals, fellow teachers, and students assessments. The findings in this study included the significant difference between students and teachers in the performance of certified teachers subject mastery. In contrast, the school principals indicated a similar perception to that of their fellow teachers. This study confirms that students gave an average score to teachers subject mastery, although the school principals and fellow teachers assessed it to be very good. Thus, a teacher certification program is expected to contribute to the teachers professionalism and the students excellence. A teacher certification program is anticipated to enhance the professionalism of teachers, particularly those specializing in English education. An individual possessing a high level of professional expertise is indispensable for the facilitation of quality education and learning.

Abstract

This research  aims  to  discover  whether  applying Islamic  videos on YouTube  might increase junior high school students' English vocabulary mastery. This research used a pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design and a questionnaire. The study population was 40 grade 8 students at SMP IT Nurul Fikri Makassar, South Sulawesi, in the 2021–2022 academic year. The respondents were recruited using a random sampling technique. The research instruments were a vocabulary test administered as a post-test and a pre-test, and a questionnaire. In analyzing  the data,  descriptive  statistics  was  used.  The  post-test  mean  score  was 84.5455; which shows that the post-test mean score was more significant than the pre- test mean score (68.6364). Of the percentage of students’ perceptions while using Islamic videos on YouTube, 85% answered yes, and only 15% answered no. Furthermore, the value of this study (0.001) was lower than the alpha level (0.05). These mean that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. Consequently, Islamic videos on YouTube could be used as medium to improve the students' English vocabulary mastery in grade 8 of SMP IT Nurul Fikri Makassar.

Abstract

This research was a qualitative study using a case study approach. It aimed to find out: (1) the strategies used by the English department students in online learning; and (2) the students’ reasons for choosing the learning strategies in online learning. The instruments used were a questionnaire and an interview. A purposive sampling method was employed to select the participants, and 52 participants were chosen for this study. The results show that most students employ the same strategies for the environment-structuring aspect, as they always make sure that the conditions in which they are having an online lecture are conducive and comfortable enough to support their learning. From the result of the interview, the reasons the students use the strategies for each aspect are that (1) setting goals motivates students to learn and can be guidance in achieving good academic results; (2) a conducive learning environment supports online learning; (3) well-prepared students readiness in learning; (4) managing time is needed due to a lack of time in online classes; (5) seeking help to get a deeper understanding of the materials or instructions; and (6) evaluation helps to find out students lacks and needs in online learning.

Abstract

This study aims to ascertain how users think about Hallo (https://www.hallo.ai), a free artificial intelligence (AI) application (app) that enables users to interact with AI teachers to learn languages. Hallo has become increasingly popular among EFL students worldwide as a platform for practicing English. In conducting this study, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method and collected the data using in-depth interviews with twenty Hallo users from Indonesia who were chosen using a purposive sampling technique. Findings from the data analysis showed that Hallo contributes to the users' increased ability and confidence in speaking English. With Hallo, users can communicate anonymously, get a lot of exposure to others, connect with people who share their goals and are on the same level as them, and come across supportive individuals. Users see English-speaking ability as influenced by two of the indicators of speaking skills: accuracy and fluency. This is because users engage in worldwide online EFL speaking practice with strangers or foreigners and are sensitive to cultural variations. Users impart accurate knowledge, pay less attention to grammar, develop pronunciation, and increase their vocabulary. Users are exposed to interlocutors frequently, their proficiency has an impact on users, users are under the influence of external forces, and users experience issues with their internet connections. In conclusion, users generally had positive perceptions of Hallo's contributions to their improved English-speaking proficiency and confidence. As a result, Hallo could be a fantastic tool for EFL learners to practice speaking.

Abstract

Permasalahan tersebut sangat menarik perhatian penulis untuk mencoba meningkatkan kemampuan siswa menulis teks berbentuk procedure melalui model pembelajaran make a match.

Abstract

This study investigates the level of classroom participation among non-English major students enrolled in English language courses. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach, data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to 20 randomly selected first-semester students from the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The results indicate that 80% of the participants demonstrated active (65%) or very active (15%) involvement in classroom activities, while 20% remained neutral. No students were categorized as passive. The mean participation score of 50 falls within the "active" category. Further analysis shows that students are more engaged in interactive activities such as asking questions (65%), expressing opinions (50%), and participating in discussions (60%). In contrast, passive indicators like sitting quietly or merely listening were less frequently reported. While 45% of students stated they mainly took notes, another 45% were unsure whether they only took notes or also engaged in discussion. These findings suggest that, despite not majoring in English, students exhibit a high level of participation in English classroom activities. This highlights the potential of incorporating interactive strategies to further enhance engagement in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction.
