Abstract

Teachers' academic and professional competencies significantly improve the quality of their learning. An ongoing process is needed to support and develop their quality. This study developed a learning environment through the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME)-based Lesson Study for Learning Community (LSLC) for high school mathematics teachers. The model is valid and practical and potentially affects the learning quality of high school mathematics teachers. The research employed a design research method of development studies was conducted in three stages: the preliminary stage, the development or prototyping stage, and the assessment stage. Prototyping development is a formative evaluation in which the phases include self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one, small group, and field tests. The research subjects were 15 high school mathematics teachers from four schools in Palembang. Data was collected through questionnaires, observation, and documentation. The research has resulted in a valid and practical teachers’ working group-learning community-class model that potentially affects high school, mathematics teachers. The learning environment is in the form of training in working groups for mathematics teachers, teacher mentoring in learning communities in schools, and teacher assessment learning processes in the classroom. The learning tools were produced using the RME-based LSLC system. The data analysis shows that the learning environment using the RME-based LSLC model can make high school mathematics teachers significantly understand learning, design learning tools, carry out learning, and evaluate learning. Consequently, the teachers’ academic competence and professionalism significantly improve their learning.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid, practical, and which has potential effect web-based realistic mathematics learning environment with the six cultural contexts of the island of Sumatera. The learning environment has the potential to positively impact primary school students. The study employed design research method, which encompassed the preliminary, design, and assessment stages using the Kirkpatrick model. The research subjects consisted of three model teachers and 57 fourth-grade students. Research data was collected through observation, documentation, questionnaires, interviews, and tests. The web-based learning environment's validity level was found to be very high, with a score of 3.32, while practicality was rated at 3.86. The potential effects of the environment on mathematics learning were also deemed to be significant, with a score of 77.35. It was designed to facilitate the teaching and learning of mathematics by the PMRI approach, with a focus on topics such as numbering, geometry, and measurement, while also developing 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Polyhedrons present a challenging topic in elementary geometry education. The Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (IRME) approach, when contextualized within the Bukit Sulap tourism area, offers a promising solution to this challenge. This study aims to design a learning trajectory for teaching the surface area of polyhedron using IRME in the context of Bukit Sulap tourism. Employing a research design with a validation study type, the study was conducted in three phases: preparation and design, experimental teaching, and retrospective analysis. The participants were 27 elementary school students from Lubuklinggau City, Indonesia. Data collection instruments included surface area problem-solving worksheets, video recordings of in-depth learning interviews, field notes, and observation sheets. The findings suggest that the Bukit Sulap tourism context significantly enhanced students' understanding of surface area problems, specifically those involving combinations of cuboids and cubes. Additionally, IRME effectively facilitated students' comprehension of abstract mathematical concepts, particularly the surface area formulas for cubes and cuboids. The study concludes that using the Bukit Sulap tourism park context as a starting point for teaching the surface area of polyhedron aligns well with the principles of IRME.

Abstract

Fraction learning has gained significant attention in mathematics education research, with a growing body of literature addressing the instructional challenges inherent in teaching fractions effectively. Establishing a solid conceptual foundation in fractions is critical to fostering broader mathematical proficiency, yet many students continue to struggle with core fractional concepts. This study addresses these issues by integrating a real-world context—Musi Rawas tourism—into fraction instruction, targeting pre-service elementary teachers enrolled in an elementary mathematics education program. Adopting a design research methodology, specifically a validation study, the study progresses through three structured phases: preliminary design, design experiments (encompassing pilot and teaching experiments), and retrospective analysis. Data collection involved teaching materials, observational checklists, and documentation to capture the instructional dynamics and learning outcomes. The study’s primary contribution is a localized instructional theory for teaching fractions within a tourism context, organized across five progressive learning activities: problem identification in the Gegas Water Lake tourism setting, contextual model development, model-based problem-solving, context-specific solution formulation, and abstraction of mathematical conclusions. This framework offers an innovative pedagogical approach, illustrating the potential for enhancing fraction learning through contextualized instruction in tourism, with detailed insights into the methodology and outcomes presented in the full study.

Abstract

Teachers’ pedagogical ability contributes significantly to their process and learning performance. To improve it, a development process is needed as long as they are still having their process of education or they are still teacher students. This study aimed to develop a valid and practical PMRI learning environment through lesson study which had a potential effect on improving the pedagogical abilities of pre-service primary school teachers. A design research method of development study type was used in this study consisting of three phases, namely the preliminary, development or prototyping phase, and assessment phase. The research subjects were 32 students of Primary School Teacher Education of Sriwijaya University. The data were collected using walkthrough, observation, documentation, questionnaires, interviews, and tests. The study produced a learning environment with a valid and practical Campus-School (CS) model and had a potential effect on improving teacher students' pedagogical ability. The learning environment was in the form of training on campus and implementation in schools. Based on the data analysis, the learning environment was able to produce pre-service primary education teachers understanding the PMRI through lesson study and design PMRI learning tools through a lesson study.
