Abstract

The 2013 curriculum in Indonesian language education explains learning based on texts. It can be said that the 2013 curriculum relies on texts, which is why it is referred to as a text-based curriculum. An explanatory text is a written explanation related to natural phenomena, social, cultural issues, and so on. Based on the journal that has been analyzed, the researcher found that students have not fully understood the structure and linguistic elements of explanatory texts and there is a lack of teaching methods that can stimulate ideas and creativity in writing explanatory texts. Therefore, in this study, the author introduces the concept map method as one of the methods that can overcome students' difficulties in writing explanatory texts. The aim of this research is to emphasize the implementation of the 2013 Curriculum in Teaching Explanatory Text Writing Using Concept Maps in Indonesian Language Learning at Junior High School. The method applied in this study is library research. The research data was obtained from articles sourced from journals. The results of the study show that from various journals that have been analyzed, it has been proven that the concept map method can help students fully understand the structure and linguistic elements in writing explanatory texts. With the concept map method, students are able to write an explanatory text. The concept map serves as an effective method in the learning process, thereby improving student knowledge in writing explanatory texts.

Abstract

Literary literacy in schools was essential because it had a positive impact on both the academic and personal development of students, such as enhancing critical thinking skills. Students learnt to analyze plot, characters, and themes, as well as evaluated various perspectives and meanings within texts. Literary literacy also enriched vocabulary and language skills. Reading various literary genres expanded students' vocabulary and improved their ability to understand and use language effectively. The aimed of this study was to understand how literary literacy fostered and developeded in schools. This research used a literature study method with a narrative review model. In this narrative review, data from several journals were analyzed and summarized based on the author's experience. The study employed a qualitative method with secondary data obtained from relevant journals. The researchers used a descriptive analytical method, collecting, identifying, organizing, and analyzing various data found. The results of the study showed that the development and enhancement of literary literacy in schools in Indonesia include: 1) Intensive Reading Programs within the GLS program, 2) Use of Technology, 3) Interactive Teaching Methods, 4) Teacher Training and Professional Development, and 5) Improvement of School Libraries.

Abstract

The study explores the development of language skills and assessment methods in Indonesian elementary education. Language skills are foundational for academic and social success, yet significant gaps remain in meeting basic competency standards. This research aims to evaluate the impact of language skills on students' academic achievements and to advocate innovative assessment techniques for improving educational outcomes. A literature review approach was adopted, drawing data from books, national and international articles, and other relevant sources. The study focused on analyzing the role of language skills and the effectiveness of various assessment forms, such as formative and summative evaluations, and performance-based assessments. The findings highlight significant deficiencies in students’ language skills, with only 60% meeting competency standards. Conventional evaluation methods, predominantly written tests focused on cognitive levels C1 and C2, fail to address students' comprehensive needs. Innovative approaches, such as formative assessments, dynamic evaluations, and performance-based assessments, show potential for holistic skill development. The study also underscores the importance of teacher training in adopting these advanced assessment methods. Performance-based assessments allow students to demonstrate language skills in practical contexts, fostering real-world applicability. Dynamic evaluations emphasize interactive processes, offering scaffolding support to enhance learning. However, implementing these methods requires overcoming barriers such as limited teacher expertise and traditional mindsets in educational institutions. Enhancing evaluation methods and teacher training can significantly improve language skills among elementary students, leading to better academic and social outcomes. By integrating innovative assessment techniques, this study provides a roadmap for bridging competency gaps and achieving meaningful educational progress in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines the application of crisis discourse analysis in Japanese language learning by analyzing how Japanese media represent crises and how students respond to them. The crises include natural disasters, pandemics, and social issues as reflected in authentic media texts such as news articles and advertisements. This study employs a descriptive-qualitative approach grounded in discourse analysis theories by Fairclough and Van Dijk. Findings indicate that integrating crisis discourse into language learning enhances students’ critical literacy and their awareness of the social construction of meaning in the Japanese language.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of gender and power in Japanese television advertisements through the lens of Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), while highlighting its educational significance as a resource for media literacy. Advertisements, as a key part of popular media, are powerful agents in shaping public perceptions and cultural norms. Especially among students, who increasingly consume media content in their daily lives. The analysis of selected advertisements aired between 2020 and 2024 reveals a recurring pattern of gender stereotyping: men are typically portrayed as assertive, dominant decision-makers, while women are depicted in passive, supportive, or domestic roles. These portrayals are reinforced through both visual elements and linguistic choices that reflect deep-rooted ideological structures. From an educational perspective, such media texts offer valuable opportunities to teach students critical literacy skills, enabling them to deconstruct messages, question assumptions, and reflect on issues of gender equity and representation. Integrating media discourse analysis into classroom practice supports the development of socially aware learners who can engage with media thoughtfully and responsibly. The study underscores the importance of media literacy as a transformative tool in promoting critical thinking and fostering a more equitable understanding of gender in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) learning model on the literacy skills of fifth-grade students in Indonesian language learning, with learning motivation as a control variable. Employing a quasi-experimental approach with a pretest-posttest control group design, this research involved two groups: the experimental group taught using the ARCS model and the control group taught using conventional methods. A total of 56 students from SDN Parsanga II participated, equally divided between the two groups. Data collection instruments included literacy tests and learning motivation questionnaires. The findings reveal a significant difference in literacy skills between students taught using the ARCS model and those taught using conventional methods. Statistical analysis, including ANCOVA, showed that the ARCS model significantly improved literacy skills, with an F-value of 29.102 and p < 0.05. Furthermore, the R Squared value of 0.355 indicates that the ARCS model and learning motivation together accounted for 35.5% of the variability in literacy skills. The four stages of the ARCS model—Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction—were instrumental in enhancing students’ literacy. These stages effectively captured students' attention, linked learning materials to their lives, built confidence in tackling texts, and provided a satisfying learning experience. The study highlights the effectiveness and flexibility of the ARCS model in improving literacy skills in elementary education. By fostering motivation and creating meaningful learning experiences, the ARCS model serves as a promising solution to address literacy challenges in elementary schools, contributing to better academic outcomes.
