Abstract

This study used two different types of instruments, including a scale test by giving two types of questionnaires to the students and a learning achievement test used by getting the MID-Test score of the students studying Research in ELT course in the undergraduate program, to ascertain the correlation between students' self-efficacy and their learning achievement, as well as the correlation between students' academic stress and their learning achievement. Quantitative research with a correlational design was used in this study. A total of 43 students studying Research in the ELT course in the undergraduate program constituted the sample for this study. Simple random sampling was also used in the sampling process, which carried out randomly regardless of the strata in that population. In this study, the researcher found that the level of students’ self-efficacy with a mean score 70,70; the level of students' academic stress with a mean score 61,81; and the learning achievement of students studying Research in ELT course in the undergraduate program with a mean score 78,72. Students' self-efficacy and learning achievement were positively correlated. This means that the higher self-efficacy in a student is the higher the learning achievement will be. While the correlation between academic stress and learning achievement is negative, it means that the higher the academic stress experienced by students, the lower the learning achievement.

Abstract

This research investigates the role of visual novel games in enhancing the learning interest and comprehension of 11th-grade nursing students at SMK Baznas Sulsel in English subjects. Adopting a qualitative approach, the study examines the effects of interactive, story-driven learning on student engagement and understanding. Data collected through student interviews indicate that the narrative structure and visual elements of visual novels make English lessons more appealing and accessible, fostering a supportive learning environment. Students reported that the interactive format of visual novels encouraged active participation and made complex language concepts easier to grasp, thus promoting both interest and deeper comprehension. These findings suggest that visual novels can be an effective educational tool for making English more engaging and relevant, especially in vocational settings. Based on the study’s positive outcomes, it is recommended that educators consider integrating visual novels into the English curriculum as a way to support motivation and understanding. Future research is suggested to assess the broader application of visual novels in other vocational subjects to evaluate if similar benefits can be achieved across different educational fields. This study contributes to the growing interest in innovative, game-based learning methods for enhancing student outcomes in language education.

Abstract

This study focuses on students' perceptions of the questioning strategies employed by English teachers at SMPN 27 Makassar. Using qualitative methods, including observation and interviews with 20 students from two different classes, the research examines how students' perceptions influence their understanding, classroom engagement, and critical thinking. The findings indicate that most students hold a positive perception of the questioning strategies used by their teachers. They believe that these strategies help enhance their understanding of the material, foster deeper thinking, and encourage active participation in discussions. Students appreciate questions that require in-depth explanations and those that challenge them to connect new concepts with previously learned material. Many students also noted that the relevance of questions to the lesson content contributed to a more structured and focused learning experience. However, some students expressed the need for more time to think before answering more complex questions, highlighting the importance of pacing in effective questioning techniques. Despite occasional nervousness, students generally found the questioning process motivating, as it increased their confidence in responding and engaging with the class. The variety of questioning strategies used also created an inclusive learning environment, allowing students to feel comfortable and encouraged. Overall, students' positive perceptions underscore the importance of well-implemented questioning strategies in promoting a more interactive and productive learning environment.
