Abstract

Abstract: This experimental study is aimed at finding out whether the use of jigsaw strategy is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru from September 27, 2017 to November 01, 2017. Cluster Sampling technique was used to choose 40 students as the participants. Data used in this research were the data about students’ reading comprehension. Therefore, Reading Comprehension Test was used as the instrument. Then, the data were analyzed by using SPSS 23.0 for windows. The result of the research showed that there was a significant effect of jigsaw strategy on the students’ reading comprehension. The mean score of the students before the treatment was 61.87, While the mean score of the students after the treatment was 80.77. Moreover, from the statistical analysis, it was found that the t-test score (22.5) was higher than t-table (2.03). Based on these findings, it is suggested that Jigsaw strategy can be used as an alternative strategy in the teaching of reading.Keywords: Jigsaw Strategy, Descriptive Text, Experimental Research

Abstract

Abstract : This study aimed to describe Student’s ability in compehending narrative text of the second year students of SMPN 1 Kubu. This descriptive research took place in SMP N 1 Kubu from April-Mei 2017. The population were about 90 students. The characters of the population are homogen in term of academic and age factors. The sample consisted of two clases, try out classs and sample class. Try out class consisted of 30 students and 30 students from sample class. In this research,the try out test aimed at acknowledging the validity of the test. The cluster random strategies technique was choosen due to that every class has equal ooportunity to be a sample group. The time allocation to administer the try out test and the revised test was 60 minutes for each of them. The data were analyzed by calculating the students’ score individually and finding out the mean of the score. The students’ scores were classified into five level mastery. They are: very poor, poor, mediocre, good and excellent. Based on the data analysed of this research, the students’ ability in comprehending narrative text at second year students of SMP N 1 Kubu was in mediocre level. Meanwhile, the mean score of the whole students’ scores was 59. The implication of the finding is that the second year students of SMP N 1 Kubu were able enough at comprehen narrative text.Key Word : Students’ Ability, Comprehending Narrrative Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the significant effect of STAD strategy on the reading comprehension of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai academic year 2018/2019. The selected sample was XI MIPA 1 students which consisted of 35 students. The sample was selected by using random sampling technique. This research used pre-experimental research design of one group pre-test post-test and collected the data by using tests on analytical exposition text. The test of this research was multiple choice test consisted of five options (A/B/C/D/E). The result of the study was found that the mean score of pre-test was 46.14 while the post-test was 61.03. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a signifant effect of STAD strategy on the reading comprehension of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai. In other words, teaching reading comprehension through STAD strategy is an effective way to solved the students’ problem on the reading comprehension.Keywords: Effect, STAD strategy, reading comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract : This study is aimed at investigating how autentic assessment has been implemented by English Teachers of Senior High Schools in Siak Regency. Specifically, the objective of this research are: 1) To investigate to what extent the teachers have implemented authentic assessment in teaching English at Senior High Schools in Siak, 2) To obtain data on how the perceptions of English teachers at High schools in Siak on the authentic assessment, 3) To identify obstacles and problems faced by English teachers in implementing Authentic Assessment as part of the 2013 Curriculum at High Schools in Siak. This is a mixed-method research. The sample of this mixed method research were all English teachers of Senior High Schools in Siak Regency selected by total sampling technique (n:39). In order to collect the data, a semi-closed questionnaire was used. The questionnaire was distributed online by using google form platform. The data then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The study shows the authentic assessment implementation is in a good level and receive a good perspective from most of the teachers. Nonetheless, teachers still experienced several problems during the implementation: the lack of time and complexity of the authentic assessment.Keywords: Authentic Assessment, Implementation, Senior High Schools.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second year students of SMPN 32 Pekanbaru in using appropriate preposition in a reading text. In particular, this research focuses on their ability in using preposition of place, time and direction. There were 40 students selected using cluster random sampling as sample of this quantitative study. The data were collected using a reading text test with 20 multiple choice tests. The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. It was found that the ability of the second year students in using appropriate preposition is poor to average level with mean score 58,88. This research recommended the students to make themselves familiar with more elaborated use of prepositions. Students can also comprehend more about the conceptualization of prepositions in many contexts by practicing writing and speaking that would require them to use prepositions. Further research can focus on how to overcome the high level of difficulties of English prepositions materials.Keywords: Students’ Ability, Preposition.

Abstract

Abstract: This Classroom Action Reserach (CAR) aimed to to prove whether the use of word walls media can improve vocabulary achievement of the second year students of SMP Negeri 5 Tapung Hilir. This research was conducted in two cycles that consisted of four meeting in each cycle. This research was conducted to overcome the existing problem on the field as well as to described and to explain whether the word walls media could improve the students’ vocabulary achievement. The result of this research average score in pre-test is 66,83 average scores in post-test cycle 1 is 69,16 and average scores in post-test cycle 2 is 76,66. The result of this research indicated that the word walls media could improve the students’ vocabulary achievement. It was also found that; The selection of appropriated word walls media; The application of word walls; The management activities of the class & practiced; and teacher support can increase students motivation in vocabulary achievement.Key Words: Improve, Vocabulary Achievement, Word walls.

Abstract

Abstract : This pre-experimental research was aimed at finding out whether there was a significant effect of jigsaw technique on the second year students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts at SMP Telekomunikasi Pekanbaru. The research design was one group pre-test post-test design. The population was the second-year students in academic year 2018/2019. The sample was 25 students out of the population, chosen by cluster sampling. The instrument used to collect the data was a reading test. The tests consisted of 40 items. The obtained data was analyzed by using SPSS version 23.0. The finding of the research showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (80.5>65.6). The value of t-test was higher than t-table (13.616>2.06) at 5% of significance level. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This means that Jigsaw Technique was effective for teaching reading comprehension concerning narrative text. There is a significant effect of jigsaw technique on the second year students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts at SMP Telekomunikasi Pekanbaru.Keywords: Jigsaw Technique, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Bangun Purba Rokan Hulu in comprehending analytical exposition texts. The research data were collected in September 2017. The subject of this research was class XI Nature Science 1 which consisted of 23 students. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test. The test contained 40 items. Based on the data analysis it was found that the highest score obtained by the students was in the aspect of finding factual information with the mean score of 74 (good level), and the lowest score was in the aspect of identifying social function with the mean score of 51 (mediocre level). As a conclusion, the ability of the second year students in comprehending analytical exposition texts was in good level (mean score 65.5). So, it is recommended that the students must be given more practice and read books in order to improve reading skill, especially in identifying social function, this is due to the fact that the students got lowest score in that aspect. And for other researchers are recommended to conduct another research design about analytical exposition text.Key Words: Students’ ability, analytical exposition texts

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this reserach was to improve the students' skills in writing procedure texts by using picture series for the eighth grade students of MTs Darul Funun El-Abbasiyah Kabupaten 50 Kota in the academic year of 2016/2017. The research was pre-experimental research. The samples of the research consisted of the students of Grade VIII 3. To get the data, the researcher conducted a written test in pre-test and post-test. The pre-test and post-test were conducted to gain the quantitative data. Score of pre-test and the post-test were used to analyze the quantitative data that were in the form of students' writing scores. The findings showed that picture series effectively improved the students’ skills in writing procedure texts. The improvements covered: 1) the students considered writing as an easy and interesting lesson, indicated by their enthusiasm to write, 2) students generated and organized their ideas more easily in a good order, 3) and picture series improved the students' skills in writing procedure texts in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. The researcher found that the students’ writing skills were improved. It can be seen from their main scores of pre-test and post-test. There was an improvement between the pre-test mean score (45.29) and the post-test mean score (70.20). The gained scores of the means was (24.91), so it can be concluded that the use of picture series could improve the students’ writing skills of procedure texts.Keywords: Effect, Picture Series, Writing, Procedure Text

Abstract

Abstract: The main objective of this descriptive research was to find out about students’ ability in comprehending English texts. The sample of this research was the second year students of SMAN 2 Bangkinang. There were 52 students participating as the sample of this research.Tthe instrument of the research was a set of multiple choice test which consist of 48 questions regarding the reading components and The data were quantitative. The data were analyzed by calculating the score of the students in answering the test and classifying them to a certain level of ability using Harris formula. The results were that out of 52 students, no one student (0%) in excellent level of ability, 16 students (30.77%) were in good level of ability, 17 students (32.69%) were in average level of ability, and for the most part, 19 students (36.54%) were in poor level of ability. In addition, the average score of the students in comprehending English texts was 51.80. It meant that the students’ ability in comprehending English texts was in the average level of ability. The most difficult aspect is the students’ ability in finding inference with mean score 42.9 was in poor level of ability. This research recommended the students to to do more practice in reading three kinds of text (Narrative, Report and analytical exposition texts) in order to comprehend texts. Further research can focus on studying each subtopic in details. Other researchers can also focus on how to overcome the high level of difficulties in comprehending English texts, particular in finding inferences.Keywords: Ability, Comprehending, English texts
