Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out the writing process which makes the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau feel anxious in writing essays. This is a descriptive quantitative research conducted by survey design. The population of this research was 107 of the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau and all of it was appointed as the sample. The data were collected through a questionnaire containing 24 close-ended statements. The questionnaire was adaptred from Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) designed by Cheng (2004) and Causes of Writing Anxiety Inventory (CWAI) designed by Rezaei and Jafari (2014). The result of data analysis showed that the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau felt anxious in drafting process of essay writing. The factors that contributed to that were: linguistic problems (18.02%), time pressure (17.75%), lack of topical knowledge (16.80%), and lack of vocabulary mastery (16.66%). Furthermore, it is recommended that students need to find out the factors that contribute to their writing anxiety and try to find the best way to cope with their anxiety. Students also need to do more practice in English essays writing and discuss their problems in writing with the lecturer. In line with that, the lecturer should create a comfortable situations in Writing class to make the students more relaxed in expressing ideas through writing and the lecturer also need to pay more attention in students’ problems of writing essays that can lead them to anxiety.Key Words: Writing, Anxiety, Writing Anxiety, Writing Essays

Abstract

Abstract : This research aimed to discover the effect of Two Stay-Two Stray (TSTS) Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru academic year 2018/2019. The selected sample was X TKJ-2 students which consisted of 34 students. The sample was selected by using cluster random sampling technique. This research was pre-experimental and the data were collected by means of pre-test and post-test design in the form of speaking test which focused on describing objects. The data were analyzed using five components of speaking: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The results showed that the score of the pretest was 60.47, the post-test was 72.98 while the improvement from both scores was 12.51. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of TSTS Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru. In other words, the teaching of speaking by through Two Stay-Two Stray Method, as one of the alternative speaking activities, has an effect on the students’ speaking ability.Keywords: Two Stay-Two Stray Method, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This decriptive research is aim to find out the ability of the third semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau in pronouncing pure vowel sounds. The sample of this research is one of the three class of the third semester studentsof English Study Program which are chosoe by using cluster sampling technique. The number of sample is 36 students. The data were collected by giving a pronunciation test to the student individually. The test asked the students to read a text and the researcher record it. The students’ score were analyzed by using Harris’ scoring system which concerned with eleven sounds of English pure vowel, they are vowel /iː/, vowel /ɪ/, vowel /ʊ/, vowel /uː/, vowel /e/, vowel /ə/, vowel /ɜː/, vowel /ɔː/, vowel /æ/, vowel /ʌ/, and vowel /ɑː/ The findings show that the students’ mean score for each sounds of English pure vowel was in “good” level where the students’ ability in terms pronouncing vowel /ɪ/ was the highest among the other aspects with the mean score 91, while pronouncing vowel /ə/ was the lowest one, with the mean score 67. Based on the results obtained, it can be inferred that the students are able to pronounce pure vowel sounds and their level of ability is in “good” level with the mean score 77. By lookng to the aspect the students mostly weak, that is pronouncing vowel /ə/, this study recommended the students to more practice in pronouncing vowel /ə/ to improve their ability in pronunciation.Key Words: Study, Ability, Pronunciation, Pure Vowel

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at finding out whether there is a significant effect of cooperative learning on reading comprehension of narrative text of the eighth grade students of SMPN 13 Pekanbaru. The research design was a pre-experimental research. The sample was VIII-2 chosen by cluster sampling technique. The result showed that the mean score of post-test (73.44) was higher than score of pre-test (63.88). The result also showed that the value of t-test (8.55) was higher than t-table (2.02) at the significance level 5%. Therefore Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect of cooperative learning on reading comprehension of narrative text of the eighth grade students of SMPN 13 Pekanbaru.Keywords: Cooperative Learning, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text.

Abstract

Abstract : This correlation research is aimed to find out the correlation of the students motivation with reading comprehension of the second year students of MAN 1 Pekanbaru. The research data were collected from July to August 2016. The subject of this research was class XI IPA 3, which consist of 30 students. The data were collected by giving a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test and questionnaire about motivation. The result of the research showed that the second year students of Man 1 Pekanbaru got mediocre level with the mean score of 49,67 in reading comprehension and enough category (67,8) in the students questionnaire of motivation. Therefore, it can be concluded that the correlation of the second year students of MAN 1 Pekanbaru in motivation and reading comprehension is high with rxy is 0,72.Key Words: Correlation, Motivation, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the significant correlation between students’ grammatical knowledge and the ability in translating Indonesian-English narrative texts by the second year students of SMAN 1 Sentajo Raya. The correlational research was used to find out the relationship between two variables or it called bivariate correlation. To collect the data in this research two tests were used. A simple random sampling technique is used to determine the sample of the research. There were 40 students participating in this research. Narrative text was used to know the students' translation ability and past tenses test was used to know students’ grammatical knowledge. The result of the study shows that the correlation between two variables are significantly correlated. As a means there is a significant a significant correlation between students’ grammatical knowledge and the ability in translating Indonesian-English narrative texts by the second year students of SMAN 1 Sentajo Raya. In other words, there is an influence of students’ grammatical knowledge towards students’ ability in translating Indonesian-English narrative texts. The finding could important distributions to both teaching translation and grammar, especially the relationship between the two variables.Key Words: Correlation, Grammatical Knowledge, Translation

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the student’s ability in comprehending descriptive texts and aimed to find out the students ability in comprehending descriptive texts. This research was conducted at SMPN 13 Pekanbaru that collected May to June 2017. The try out class was VIII-4 (30 students) and the sample was VIII-1 (30 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. The result showed that the ability of the second year students of SMPN 13 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts for each component is in good level which the mean score was 66.5, however, the students have not passed the minimum score of the school which is 80. finding factual information the mean score was 74, finding meaning of vocabullary was 59.3, finding references the mean score was 66.6, finding main idea the mean score was 70, finding inference was 60, and finding social function was 69.3. Therefore, this research suggested the English teachers to give extra time in giving explanation about reading texts and the students should learn the components in descriptive texts that will help them in comprehend other reading texts.Key Words: Student’s Ability, Comprehending Descriptive Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is intended to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of Mind Mapping Technique on the ability of the first grade students of SMPN 25 Pekanbaru in comprehending Descriptive Texts. The research design was pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The samples were VII 7 students chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The Data were calculated by using Microsoft Excel 2010 and analyzed by using SPSS. The result of the data analysis showed that mean score of the pre-test was 59,23 and the mean score of the post-test was 69,32. In other words, the mean score of the post-test was higher than pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test (6.648) was higher than t-table (2.024) at significance level of 5%. It can be concluded that Alternative Hypothesis was accepted. Thus, there was a significant effect of Mind Mapping Technique on the ability of the first grade students of SMPN 25 Pekanbaru in comprehending Descriptive Texts. Several recommendations were given for students such as to read more texts, learn to distinguish the important components of the text, learn a lot of material quickly, and share information with their friend in order to get more knowledge and be more focus on increasing their vocabulary. In line with it, the teachers need to give more attention on how to improve students’ comprehension when implementing Mind Mapping in the class.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out types of errors made by the first year students of SMAN 8 Pekanbaru in writing recount text. This is a descriptive research The participants of this research were 60 students of class X Science 10 and X Social 2 of SMAN 8 Pekanbaru. The students were selected to be the sample using cluster sampling technique. The writer collected the data by using using writing test which the topic given is “Unforgettable Experience”. The result of this research showed that the students committed error into four types: error of omission, error of addition, error of formation, and error of ordering. From the frequency of each error types, error of formation was the error which most frequently produced by the students. It took 71.90% of the total errors. Moreover, 19.53% errors fell into error of omission and 5.10% errors fell into error of ordering; whereas, for error of addition, it only took 3.47%Key Words: Error, Writing, Recount text.

Abstract

Abstract: This decriptive research was conducted to find out the writing ability in narrative text. The sample of this research was 60 participants from the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Tualang Perawang by using cluster random sampling technique. The instruments used in this research was writing test. The data were analyzed by calculating students’ score individually and finding out the mean score by using SPSS version 23.0. The data were presentated by using table and bar graph. The researche findings showed that the students’s writing ability was in Poor Category (39.12). So, it was suggested that the students should be more active in taking part in writing activities not only during learning activities in the classroom but also outside the classroom. Then, teacher need motivate the students to do more practice in writing esspecially in narrative text.Key words: Ability, Writing, Narrative Text
